It&rsquo;s an original Model Tech Calypso. I did some trading with a customer who bought it years ago and brought it from <st1:city w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">Mexico City</st1lace></st1:city> when he moved to the states. It's only taken me 18 months to finish. <span class="yshortcuts"><span id="lw_1244075923_0" style="cursor: pointer;">Maiden flight</span></span> was last Sunday.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o></o></p><p class="MsoNormal">There was a problem with interference on the Aileron channel so I had to relocate the <span class="yshortcuts"><span id="lw_1244075923_1">lithium battery</span></span> and the regulator. Problem solved. Flew it again Monday and today and I'm very happy over all. Plane flew very nose heavy so I've added 1 once of lead to the tail. CG given in the instructions was 125mm to 145mm and I&rsquo;m currently at 135. I also had to add some rudder throw. Plane would not hold knife edge and was lacking rudder authority on the stall turns. There where no control throws given in the instruction so I set it up by the TLAR principle. (That Looks About Right) The roll rate and elevator throws feel good but I'm sure I will be adjusting them as I get better acquainted with the plane. It does have a bit of rudder coupling. It drops the nose and wing with rudder. I&rsquo;ll have to use some mixes on this one.

Engine is an OS .61FX Vince (Crankpin) gave me. Thanks Vince. The engine runs great. Motor mounted at 8 o'clock so the exhaust is at 6 o'clock. I may go to an Ultra Thrust muffler later. No plans to use a Tuned Pipe. <br style="" /><![if !supportLineBreakNewLine]><br style="" /><![endif]></p><p class="MsoNormal">Specs:

This is by far the best covering job I've done as well as the easiest. Monokote never went on this easy. Colors are Bright Yellow, Silver, Deep Blue and <span class="yshortcuts"><span id="lw_1244075923_4">Carbon Fiber</span></span>. My own trim scheme. We are going to have an Aerobatic Fun Fly on June 28th. This will be a just for fun type event. No awards (I think) just come out have fun and practice some aerobatics. Mostly we will be flying AMA pattern as well as FAI and F3M international scale aerobatics. We're working on plans to have a Pattern contest in January that will include all pattern classes as well as the new F3M class.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o></o></p><p class="MsoNormal">After six flights on the Calypso, I think it will work for AMA pattern. Notice in the pictures the grass under the plane. That's what our runways look like now. It just doesn't get any better than that.

Bob,

beautiful Calypso! Congrats on a smooth maiden.

As you say, that is one amazing golf green you guys take off from. Who does the lawn!?

David.

P.S. Inoticed you had the same problem Idid with a corrupt post. It didn't matter what I did, the meta tags just wouldn't go away until Ireposted anew.

Thanks David.

The first couple of flights where a bit nerve racking when the ailerons started jittering, but it's been fantastic since moving the regulator. The aileron extensions came out of the wing and ran right over the regulator, getting interferance or RF noise. I swapted the regulator location with the receiver and no more problem.

The runways (yes there are two, North/South, East/West) are princes bermuda grass cut at just one inch tall. The club spent almost $70,000 putting in the new runways. The runways each measure 75 feet wide by 500 feet long and they're absolutely smooth. I mowed the runways this afternoon. I'm one of three guys who mow three times a week. It's a lot of work to maintain but well worth the effort. We actually have the kind of flying facility that every RC pilot dreams about.

Yeah I notice the tags and tried to edit but that didn't work so just left them go.

balsawings,

That's a good looking Calypso. How much does it weigh? I have one from the mid '80s with an OS FS90 rear cam mounted inverted. Not a speed demon but is a smooth flying plane.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

The finish is the result of lots of sandpaper, elbow grease and Ultra Kote.

The final weight on the plane now stands at 7 lbs. 7 ozs. after adding the 1 once of lead to the tail. I was hoping to keep the weight down to 7.5 lbs. so I just managed to meet that goal. The plane is very slick and now I know why Hanno designed it with the airbrakes on the gear. It's tough to get the plane on the ground. It gets into ground effect and just keeps on flying. I'm looking for differant (lighter) wheels to help reduce the weight a bit more.

Terry, the wing has an amazing amount of lift and flys very well at the slower speeds. Thats my basis for believing the plane will proform AMA turnaround. It would have been even better with a four stroke. It's tough to fly AMA turnaround with a fast plane. The OS .61 with the 13 x 7 prop flys the plane at a consistant speed with great virtical without having to fly fast. I've been practicing Intermediate but haven't flown the sequance yet with the Calypso, so I'm going out to the field tomorrow morning. I'll try flying the box tomorrow and see how it does.
