Unknown Pattern Ship

I'll soon be adding this to my growing hangar of pattern ship and I have no clue what this is. The person I'm getting it from doesn't know either or have any plans for it. When I get it, I'll post some pics and specs. In the meantime, does anybody have a clue what this is? Thanks guys!

Not an Aurora. Looks much earlier, possibly a Blue Angel. The huge vertical fin is a bit puzzling. All wood construction? The strip type ailerons with torque rods and a single aileron servo are at least 25 years old. Is it set up for retracts and did they come with the airplane? Dimensions would help a lot. I'm guessing the finished fuselage length is about 55".
Sorry, not really a definitive answer, but you'll get lots of help here!

possibly a blue angel but a very early version if it is. the vertical is way different and the entire fuse lacks the curves of a later version, if it's a BA. other areas are dead on for the BA. the pilot area for sure, as well as the engine opening and the belly pan.

Blue Angel, with the Yoshioka mods. (Thinned rear fuselage with rudder extended to bottom of fuselage) If you can see obvious kit part number stamps on any of the bits the it's been modified from the standard MK kit, if not then its been scratched.

I called the owner of the model and got a little info. He didn't know the size without grabbing a tape and taking measurements. There are cutouts in the bottom for retracts and the model doesn't have any finish on the wood. I'm liking that part, it'll make it a lot easier to move forward with a finish. I'm not an expert on the different versions of the BA, but after looking at 8178's build thread and the pics on the image site, it certainly looks like it has a lot of BA traits.

Freebird, this must put the Banshee further down in the stack. Nice find what ever it is. I'll go with the BA. Finally finished covering my Banshee and I'm in the process of putting it back together. Hope you are well.....regards Sugarfox

OK, took a road trip today from northwest CT to southeast PA to pick up the mystery ship. It was well worth the trip as the model only cost me $40. Not to bad, eh! The previous owner bought it sometime last year in up state New York at an estate sale. He doesn't know anything about it or have the plans or control surfaces. Anyway, the model is kit built, very nicely I might add. There's a fair amount of hangar rash, but nothing that can't be easily repaired. Specs of the model are:
Span: 64"
Chord: 14" @ the root
Length: 52" without the rudder
Stab span: 28"
The model has a fair amount of mold staining, anybody know how to rid the model of it? To help all of you experts, I'll post a bunch of pics. But after looking it over and comparing it with 8178's Blue Angel, I think that I have a version of the Blue Angel. What do you guys think?

Freebird - You lucky dog. And, at $40.00, you are really a lucky dog. Mold in the wood. Get the paint away, if there is any, then bleach it out. Dry the area, put on a mask, bleach on rag. Throw rag away when finished, it will disintegrate.
Some paint thinner's will work, bleach is better. You can soak it good, let set overnight, in the morning, you should have new looking wood. Try a little area first.

Looks like one of the early Blue Angel variants. There is one similar to it posted on one of the pages of my Blue Angle thread. I’d be very careful how you go about the cleaning of the balsa. As you well know dampness and balsa do not mix, so you might just try light sanding all over to remove the dark color of the balsa. Great buy!!

actually the more i look at it there is a lot like the version 8178 built (and mine, which has stalled at the moment). i would rip the vertical stab off (or modify it) and change it to the sleeker version. everything else looks great.

FB,
nice looking "Bluish Angel". The numbering on the parts does feel like it comes from a Japanese kit. The fin, as others have pointed out, does seem more jet like as in the early prototype of the BA rather than the Yoshioka winning model. It could be interesting to keep it like that from a "vintage" standpoint. It certainly makes for different BA!
Oh, nice planter... thanks for keeping her off the ground this time
