Devin,

nice progress!

I hope you'll have 4 good screws on that wing holding her in place - I can see the paint wanting to peel off at the speed it will be moving out!

Single center mounted flap servo on torque rods?

How many watts in that heli 600 motor? What prop do you have in mind? Oversquare? Looks like at least a 10'' pitch.

By the way, isn't that spinner a tad too heavy? It looks like it might make the motor work harder. I'd consider one of them e-lightened tru-turns.

David.

2000Watts 10x10 loaded on ground rpm max is 18000 rpm unloaded should be 20000

Whoa! Serious power.

Lipos? Are you on 6s?

I guesstimate somewhere between 160 and 180 mph at altitude. How high I don't know but I'd take her up to 3000 m for a starters. You might have to take a trip to the rockies... :)

Estes Park has some nice open meadows.

Devin I'm building a P-8 myself, any new progress on your project?

RE: looking for a phoenix 8

I had a Phoenix 8 back in the day. (or was it a Phoenix 9?) Anyways, it was one of the two. Had a piped OS .61 with Rhom Air retracts and good for about 110ish mph I'd guess. You may want to consider a flux capacitor with 1.21 gigawatts to hit 200 mph.

I applaud your effort though, sweet looking 8 so far.

its on it legs now its time for gear doors

The gear doors will be cool. I can't wait to see that. I admire the warbird builders doing the same.

Yup! That fuse and wing better be as smooth and slippery as squid to approach Mach 1. :D

Will you be using Nanotech batteries?

Might want to wrap that motor in a cloud of liquid Nitrogen... [X(]

Can't wait till you tach it and get a read on static thrust! How much does a 10x10 pull at 19K? 15 lbs static? Just guessing. There are "calculators" somewhere.

David.

How much W.O.T. time would such a setup yield with today's batteries?

RE: looking for a phoenix 8

it should run for 5 to 6 mins at full power

RE: looking for a phoenix 8

Paul,

I don't think weight will be the limiting factor in the goals of this project. In fact, a heavier model will help to build up speed in a dive. It'll be a matter of how much aerodynamic drag this puppy has. I had suggested flying at altitude where the air is thinner - the higher the better. The beauty is that unlike glow engines, the thin air doesn't affect the power of the electrons :D

I'd imagine that at least a 1/2 F3A pack could be used (6s 5000 mAh) if not more. The batteries today are amazing - they can discharge at bursts of 90c - that is pretty serious current. The thing to watch out for I imagine is to make sure the motor leads are very short and that the ESC is top notch and up to the task. Flight logging would be cool to see what's happening to the system. The other thing I'd be concerned with is the capability of the motor and its bearings. A good choice to choose a heli high kV motor.

WOT, which would only be needed during a speed attempt, could easily run 5 minutes on a 5000-6000 mAh pack but I'm just guesstimating. I think there are about 2000W available here and 700 will fly the model without a problem.

The fastest electric model I've seen on YouTube is a GP revolver with a 10s pack (make that 12s - just watched the video again). The model weighs a ton and lands at 100 mph greasing in but it does move out in a serious way. Despite its weight, it heads straight up in a flash until you loose it. The pilot has PDG eyes!

Here's the video. Apparently clocked at 160 mph:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NL_ZbFv0xFE

I don't know how much power he has available but I think the P8 might be more aerodynamic except possibly for the wings.

16x16 prop! Whoa, that's big power. I wonder how much thrust. Devin's 10x10 at 19K will be interesting to see.

David.

i going to use 6s 5000ma 45c battery
Devin,

looks like you might need two of those packs ! ;)

It would be interesting to see the performance difference of a setup on 6s vs 12s. The weight difference would be significant but so would the power!

I have the feeling that clocking in the neighborhood of 150 mph on 6s is the most that can be done. On 10 or 12s things change but maybe not by much.

Good thing you put those excellent skins on the wing & stab!

David.

i watched the video and i got 150 easyand the chart said the 10x10 prop should have 20lbs thrust unstalled and 10 stalled static thrust

Wagner - Look's very good. Question : How do you build so fast ? I build glass and foam plane's, and to be up to speed as you are on this project, I would be in my shop, 12 hour's a day, frequently. No shave, eat sparingly, hit the sack, dream of my next move on the project, get up, go at it again, day after day. I am retired now, lot of other thing's going on, a glass and foam bird half way done, not in the shop that much, but you have to take a break now and then. On this P-8 you have going, how many hour's do you have in it up to now? I also realize the dedication and enthusiasm part, plus seeing the finished product in your head.

20 to 30 hours i guess if i want to bad enough i could hand done that in a week

plus i think out of the box in many way im only 27 so i try new ways all the time

Devin,

are you saying that you've already test flown it in primer!?

10 lbs thrust is serious. Have you spooled up the motor yet on the prop?

David.

Devin, you did change the airfoil on the wing and stab?

Wagner24314 05-28-2011 10:53 AM

RE: looking for a phoenix 8

yes i did but just a little bit

wing tip is the same as the root of the stab and i made my own stab tip airfoil

Devin,

go for the Nanotechs - they sound to be monster batteries!
