[:@]I HATE PAINTING!!!!!!! I was finally able to shoot some color tonight. I had my white base coat pull up. I may of had my primer TOO smooth. I wet sanded with 320. I shot the orange and it ran really easy. I dry sanded the base coat w/ 320. I shot several mist coats and it still ran. The orange is very transparent. The black is even thinner. I'm not calling Nelson's Paint bad, you just have to work with it lot more carefully. When it sets, it is nice and smooth w/ a semi gloss finish. I will dry sand the runs and reshoot. I will brush on the white where it lifted. Hopefully I will be able to color sand everything smooth before the clearcoat.

I know that paint really looks nice when done right. However, in the middle of the job, Ultracote probably doesn't seem like such a bad idea. Hang in there, it will be worth the effort.

I was talking to a friend who shoots water base paints on his warbirds and told him of my problems. He said I had my primer sanded too smooth. He said I should finish with 220 dry so it has something to bite into. I have remasked everything and sanded to try it again. And as for the runs, well I have a heavy finger. I was going to post pics but had it half remasked when I thought of it. I'm 45 years old and still learning new tricks. I painted my first airplane, a CG Lil' Wizard with Aero Gloss dope when I was 5. My Dad then taught how to mix and use K&B from then on. I have used Perfect Paints with excellent results in the past but they are out of business. I have enough to paint my Mustang.:eek:

Finally, I was able to add some color. Still need to add some black and I will have some vinyl graphics made up. Pattern is somewhat taken from a TV2 (Navy T-33) and a TA4J.

:DFinally I was able to get back to my bird. I now have all the color coats in place. I know the orange line on the fillet and wing don't line up, but they don't on the full scale either. I hope to get markings on the wing by the weekend to keep my inspired....

I just shoot in my room. Everything is water based. I just cover w/ plastic on the walls and drape my door closed. I keep the finished birds in a different room.

i am getting closer to painting a couple of my projects and i just read where someone was talking about his primer being too slick also. while buying filler primer recently i noticed primer sealer. apparently improves paint adhesion and gloss. although i bought it i don't know anything about it's claim. anybody else?

I talked to Jerry Nelson about sanding primers. He said when you wet sand you round over the edges that you make, dry sanding will leave sharp edges giving the paint something to hold on to. I went to 220 grit dry and it took care of my sticking problems. I will still wet sand my color coat to knock down the edge then LIGHTLY sand w/ 220 before the clear coat.

Boy does that bring back some memories! My first one in 1974 had a Veco .61. Second one had a Webra Speed .61 w/ pipe. A bit heavier than some of its competitiors, but always a sweet flyer. One of the best landing airplanes I've ever flown. Wish the original like you have was still available. I'm very interested in the Nelson paint system. Let us know how it works out. Good luck!

What is this thing supposed to weigh? Accounting for my final clearcoat, I'll be at 8.5 lbs. That's everything included. I have read it comes out heavy but there are no weights given on Bob Smith instructions.

8.5 lbs will be excellent for that plane. Most of the ones I knew about came in at least that and many around 8.75-9 lbs. depending on finishing technique, type of retracts, etc. My first one with Kraft retracts and K&B paint came out nearly 9 lbs. Second one painted w/ K&B primer and dope color was about 8.5 lbs. At any rate, 8.5, especially with a pipe should be great and it'll fly terrific. Lands like a Kaos! Your paint job is looking great. With a clear canopy and two jet pilot figures, the T2-A just begs for a military paint scheme.

Purchased a NIBox Bob Smith two weeks ago. Its a complete kit and is in NEW shape. I don't think the tape on the box had been cut until I cut it to look at the kit.

I had a Bob Smith T2-A back around 1975. I put an Air Force Thunderbird paint scheme on it with K&B Superpoxy. Snoopy with googles and flying helmet was in the front seat under the canopy....Woodstock was in the back seat. Kraft electric retracts and a Webra Speed 61. I finished the paint job just in time to get some pictures of my T2-A with the Thunderbirds. They were flying the Northrup T-38 Talon at that time. They were at Reese AFB in Lubbock, TX for the annual base open house and airshow. The T2-A flew great, like it was "on rails" for the short time I had it. Unfortunately the plane didn't last too long. I was flying from a short field and slowed it down too much on the base leg. When I started to turn final, I stalled it....left wing dropped and it went in nose first. Snoopy and Woodstock didn't have time to eject., The fibreglass was a mess. The crash was stricly my own fault.

You lucky so and so! That's probably my favorite pattern plane of all time. Careful with the weight on your finish, and enjoy. Post some pictures when you get her done.

If you really need one, order a new short kit from Dan at Carolina Custom Aircraft. I have his T2A-40 and Brushfire kits and the fiberglass work is very light and nicely finished.

Well, here are some shots of the fuse. I have started to add panel lines to it. I just held the new Pheonix V from Wing Mfg. at the Toledo show. It has a lightweight Fg fuse w/ carbon fiber bands in the aft fuse. It has foam cores. It come w/o any wood but has templates and lists for $175.00 at the show. I have one on order from my LHS. I will put in a Rossi .60 and B&D retracts.

Very nice work! How are you doing the panel lines- ink, tape, or? And how will you fuel proof them? Thanks for the news on Wing Mfg Phoenix 5. I just checked their website and didn't see it listed. I think if they can keep them around $200, should sell well.
