Getting ready to put on final primer coat on my Tom Atkins T2A. Will have an Enya Mk IV AAC .60 with B&D retracts. Futaba 9CAP will guide it. I will try the new Nelson Products paint system

Can't wait to see some color on her!

The T2A is one of my favorites, looking great so far.

Thanks, I'm going with his paint scheme of white, orange and black with a few changes. I have painted alot of planes in the past 40 years and I like the original.

I had a T2A from Bob Smith back in the '70's. It had a green glass fuselage and the foam wing and stab was covered in the same green glass covering. The paint scheme was like the USAF Thunderbirds. Snoopy was in the front seat and Woodstock was in the back. Power was Webra Speed .61 It flew like it was on rails. I wish I had it today and I'm sure you will really enjoy yours.

Was looking at your build pics and noticed the lines are different from my T2A. Then after looking at Dan Hine's Carolina Aircraft brochure, I see the MKI and MKII differences. Good luck with the build.

Airbusdrvr,
You've got a really good-looking T2A in your pic. What engine and pipe do you have in it? Would a Jett .90 rear exhaust fit in it? Does it have any roll-axis coupling from the rudder?

JC

This also is a Bob Smith kit. I had to contact Dan for a new rudder and some prints. I won this off of e-bay several years back and a few things were missing. His rudder is a little shorter and his incedences are diffrent. Dan and I e-mailed each other on this and I went with his as the original were all over the place.

Tom Atkins designed really good looking (Senior) Patternships. The first time I met Tom was back in early 1994 at the North Georgia Flying Circus field in Paulding County, GA. Tom had his Tanglefoot the field and I fell in love with it on first sight.
I have one of his Tanglefoot kits in the box and plan to start building it this Spring. Our local club (Fort Worth Thunderbirds) is showing some noteworthy interest in the SPA and I suspect we will have a SPA event at the club pretty soon.... :-)
I also have an Atlanta 60, equipped with an OS 61 RF-P, that is ready & waiting... should they decide to have a BPA event too!

That is a sweet airplane, my friend. Brings back a lot of memories. You will enjoy that one for sure.

Good luck,

Thanks guys. I shot primer and found alot of pinholes in the wing itself. Looks like the epoxy never filled the weave. I didn't see or feel it before I shot . I went to Nelsons website and I did go with the 30% rubbing alcohol to thin it. I have flow Skylarks, Pheonix 8's and Tiporares for years. In fact in one of the wing pictures you can see my Tipo (before and after it hit a tree during a knife edge to knife edge pass at a strange field) and my Skylark. PS, that tree was cut down after two other people hit it. I will post some pics on Wed. I work 12 hour night shifts and not much time to paint on my days off.

Hello JC,
I remember putting some time on Bill Rutledge's brand new T2A MK 2 back when they first came out, and it was as pure as most decent pre-electronic trim airplanes. I think I might have remembered if it had any warts.

Enjoy!

[:@] Here is what I was talking about. I have some in both panels and a little on the fuse.. Hard to photo on an all white surface. I will sand and use glazing puttty to fill and reprime. I know, this is supposed to be a relaxing hobby..........

I've seen this before. My solution in the past was to use a good filling type of primer, 2 or 3 coats, and wet sand. That way you can build up just where it's needed. I used to use K&B superPoxy primer.

I miss K&B products. I painted many an airplane with their primer, it sanded easy and smooth as glass. Nelsons takes awhile to set. I can glaze, sand and prime in 60 minutes.

Well, I filled all those pinholes I found after I primed. Nelsons dries to a semi gloss making it easy to find pinholes, dips and things. Now my bird looks like it has a rash or something. I will reprime Fri nite. Here are some birds of the past. One of my three Tipos before and after, My first pattern ship a CG Sklark 56 MkII. Yes, it has a full lighting system I came up with. I was able to put in retracts. I built just before I went into the US Navy in 1981. And finally my GP Tracer. Here is a shot of an EA-6B Prowler on the USS Independence, Med '83. I was an Aviation Electronics Tech (AT) for VAQ-131 Lancers. Go NAVY (Army-Navy game this weekend)

This stuff sounds similar, I think I will try some this winter

edp,
I sure like the picture of your Tiporare. I was in the Navy from 66-70. Bought my first radio, a Futaba in Japan in 1969. I recently returned to RC after 25 years. Now I'm flying a Futaba FAAST 2.4ghz. Put in 5 flights this morning with clear blue skies, 65 degrees and wind at 5 mph right down the runway.:D
Best Regards

It's 37 deg. and 20mph winds in NE Ohio or as we call it building season. My basement is nice and toasty.

:DFINALLY, I have it filled and primed. I kept finding pinholes in the weave. The more I looked, the more I found. I mixed up a batch of Nelson's primer and dabbed/brushed it on filling pinholes. It took alot longer to dry this way than spraying it on (about 3 days). I finished wet sanding this morning and hope to shoot white tonight. I have my room at a toasty 75 deg. while it is 22 deg. outside!!!! Those are scratch built instument panels. I practiced with these as I am building a Top Flite GE 1/7 Mustang Mk.III (RAF P51b/c).

edp,
It's not fair. These pics of your T2A are sure making me want one. My T2A I had back in the 70's had the USAF Thunderbird paint scheme. Snoopy was in the front seat and Woodstock was in the back. Unfortunately mine didn't last long. I "dumb-thumbed" it on about the 20th flight.
May yours give you many years of enjoyment.
Best regards

Finally, it's all white. I read and reread Nelsons instructions on there web site. I did use more water than the two cap fulls. The white is really thick. I used 6ozs. of paint to cover everything. I used close to 1 1/2 ozs. of water to thin it. I did add the crosslinker to help it flow. I am using a Badger touch up gun at 35 PSI. I will use my Badger airbrush to shoot color on Wed. night (that pesky work stuff gets in the way!!) I use and airbrush because of small batches to mix.
