Chief - This P-6 was carried around for over 30 year's, transfer's, etc. When moving, it went with me, in the car, or whatever company vehicle I had at the time, or the wife's station wagon, (soccer mom). Not stealing your thunder here.

But, Crank, we didn’t tell anybody before so nobody knows but, it was basically a converted Simla with clipped wings.

At least you finished the job Crank. My 30 year project (a Tiporare) is still waiting for a little attention.
Here's a photo of my skinned Deception wings.. more as I shoot it. Greg |

ORIGINAL: ChiefK Here's a photo of my skinned Deception wings.. more as I shoot it. Greg The maiden flight occurred at the SPA contest in Asheville, NC this past weekend. The airplane felt great, but I flew my "seasoned" WM Intruder in the contest and it was just as well. A few minor issues did crop up with the Deception. The plane dropped one of the aileron pushrod links, and I noted some irregularity in centering of the rudder servo. Found the rudder pushrod was rubbing against a fuselage former, and replaced all pushrod links with the steel press-on type. Serious trimming at every opportunity... coming up. A few pics for anyone interested.. Greg |
RE: Deception Build
Hey Cees - That's cool. I have not been on this thread in a while.

RE: Deception Build
Look great Greg! I need to head down your way one of these days. Looks like you have a nice field.
|
RE: Deception Build
Jeff, the field in the photo is the Asheville field, but you certainly welcome to fly with us (the Sandhills Model Aircraft Club) in Cameron, NC anytime you are in the area. Send me a PM if/when you think you can visit us.

RE: Deception Build
Sounds good Greg. I'll wait until these 96 degree days with 80% humidity are behind us though. [:o]

Found the rudder pushrod was rubbing against a fuselage former, and replaced all pushrod links with the steel press-on type. Serious trimming at every opportunity... coming up. There remained a problem with the rudder (which didn't occur until landing). The rudder seemed to be jammed in full deflection. On closer inspection (at home), it appeared that there was a problem at the exit end of the pushrod as well. I think that's resolved now, and I also figured out how to set up the Hitec engine cutoff feature. Got a medical appointment tomorrow, will try to fly again Wednesday. (got to get the time now because I've got a pretty full load of classes to teach starting in a couple of weeks - then I'll be limited to weekends). ChiefK |

Well, I'm back on it again. I think I just like to age my planes before I finish them. The T2A took seven years[>:] I also built a PT-60 last winter and I'm not sure why. I'm trimming the T2A and it got me wanting to finish the Deception. I just have to remember where I stopped LOL.

Well, it is finally glassed and canopy set. Right as it sits, it is well balanced but forgot the weigh it[:@] I have started the fun part of preping for paint. Can you say MESSY?
I just wieghed it. As it sits w/o radio, 6 lbs and 12 ozs. I should come in at or under the 8-1/2 lb mark. |

It looks exactly like mine did at that stage.... including the same engine, same muffler, and same prop. I really liked that plane. So much so that I am currently building a new fuselage for the salvaged wings, tail surfaces, and canopy to replace the smashed one. Hope you like yours as much as I liked mine. I did change the original taildragger LG configuration (fuselage mounted heavy duty aluminum dural) to wire mains mounted in the wing for this go round. My original gear just was really hard to land without bouncing. Probably the result of using too stiff dural gear.

RE: Deception Build
MRSHEA,
Go to page 5 of this thread. I have all the products that I have/am using all through the thread. The paint will be Klass Kote. I works like the K&B of old. |
RE: Deception Build
I used KlassKote the first time around, and I plan to use it again.

I have added the servo pocket, should have done it BEFORE I glassed.[:@]
I brushed on the weave filling slurry of vinyl spackle and water 50/50 mix. It fills in and sands easily in one coat w/o adding any weight. Control surfaces ready for primer spray coat. |

Sanding the slurry coat off, very messy:D

Ready for spray primer next weekend:D A little over 4-1/2 lbs for complete airframe
|
RE: Deception Build
OK Jeff..... temps are down.... come fly with me and the the Sandhills Model aircraft Club (SMAC). In Cameron, NC (near Carthage), Moore county.
|
RE: Deception Build
How do you apply that slurry? Brush or spatula?
ChiefK |
RE: Deception Build
ChiefK,
I just brush/slop it on w/ an acid brush. |
RE: Deception Build
It sits now in primer. I was surprised to find only a few blemishes pop up, mostly where the cloth sucked down into the grain in the top block . The slurry idea worked great.
Hope to shoot the white this weekend and then color next weekend. My painter friend is retired, I'm not:) |
