Massachusetts Man Arrested in Plot to Destroy Pentagon, U.S. Capitol
Published September 28, 2011
| Associated Press
Print Email Share Comments Text Size BOSTON – A 26-year-old Massachusetts man has been arrested and accused of plotting to destroy the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol with large remote-controlled aircraft filled with explosives.
Rezwan Ferdaus of Ashland was arrested Wednesday in Framingham when undercover federal agents delivered materials he'd requested for his alleged plan, including grenades, six machine guns and what Ferdaus believed was C-4 explosive.
Ferdaus, a U.S. citizen and Northeastern University graduate, was scheduled to make an initial appearance in federal court in Worcester on Wednesday afternoon.
A message for comment was left for his attorney, Catherine Byrne.
According to the federal affidavit, Ferdaus began planning "jihad" against the U.S. in early 2010. He allegedly believed he would have a large psychological impact by killing Americans, who he described as "enemies of Allah."

Let's hope we won't have further regulations forced on us.
With all of the extra large giant scale airplanes (100lbs+) out there and the readily available GPS devices, that could be used as an autopilot out of the line of sight, I'm surprised that this is the first time someone has attempted it.
Not a good day for our hobby...

That's what I'm very worried about. No, it's not a good day for us at all. This is the kind of ***** that angers me. Goes to show we do have a lot of stupid people in this world doing dumb things.

RE: Man is Arrested for attempted Attack!
I like how they said large remote controlled aircraft and then later stated he had an F-86 delivered to him. If it is indeed the E-flite F-86 then I hope he was not planning on causing much damage???
You can guarantee this will be used in the future proposal from the FAA...may not have much merit as this is (so far) a recent isolated incident.
We'll wait and see.

NOTHING that the FAA is currently doing is motivated by security concerns, it's not their area of responsibility. They have made this point repeatedly. They are motivated by air safety concerns. Period.
What scares me is what DHS might get a bug up their butts to do. But on the other hand Nissan can still sell Pathfinders despite some idiot trying to load it with explosives in Times Square.

Hopefully there will be some common sense about this in that it's not what is used, but rather the nut trying to do something bad with it.
But like others, I'm afraid we may see some irrational blowback from this. I hope not though.

I am beginning to believe you can't trust anything you see on the news, Heaven knows whenever I have read an article in the newspaper about something familiar to me.. it was NEVER correct.
That being said, I think we the flying community are the best eyes and ears to spot these nut jobs, and hopefully the govt. realizes that.

Uhh...433 MHz RC control has a range of 120 miles, soooo... 5 or 10 mile control distances, along with similar FPV capabilities, it is easily feasable. I just turned in a research paper for my BSBA degree...

CBS has the same story. The 'drone aircraft' they show on TV looks like a foamy Sea Fury: yellow wings, dark blue fuselage, etc.
Certainly not doing RC any favors, let's hope it does skate by the alphabet agencies.

The guy IS an American citizen!!! I believe THAT would be TREASON. He should be charged with THAT crime!!!!! It does carry the death penalty. If he was exicuted I don't think he would get to see his "75" virgins. After a few of them were stopped that way, they might just not be quite so interested in doing something like that!!!!! Come to think of it, the same deal should apply to murderers, rapist, child molesters. Just my 2cents.

You mean if we didn't allow foamies in the hobby, this might not happen/(!) OK, seriously, this stuff worries me, especially since the
FAA hasn't released the new policies governing model flight(that I am aware of). I just don't want to see the AMA, which is a self policing organization, to be rendered a nametag on a door in a very large office building somewhere in DC, out of sight and out of mind.
