Another question........Motor

With the ice storm up here in NH, I have been in my workshop playing heli hover and trying not to clip the workbenches, lol

Now I run a pack or two 3cell lipo and then I let my motor cool off (400 brushed).

I use an infra red temp probe to check motor temps and even with the heat sink on it , it runs around 148°-154°.

My question is.....whats too hot? I know the range for nitro but not for electric.

Would a brushless run cooler?

Should I just not worry about it? I have fried motors in Evaders (electric car) and E planes before but they had a lot of hours on them.

Because you are just hovering there is no air passing by the motor to help cool it. Once you begin forward flight it will running cooler. I believe a brushless would run cooler.

The real problem is you are running Lipos on the brushed motor which means you should have a dropped the motor tooth by one to a 9T. Lipos introduce a higher Amp and Current opposed to a Nicad/Nihm.

So its at a 10T now? and going to a 9T means it will turn faster.........? ya, faster at a smaller gear set.

I know lipo tends to draw more mostly on brushed motors. I think the rule generaly is lipo=brushed nimh=brushed or as a general rule in my mind.......whoops getting into the 70's again..lol

So a motor turning faster runs cooler because its not working as hard?

I just checked, and the manual does offer a 8T 9T and a 10T pinion gear.
So if you change the pinion, do you have to change the spur gear like we do for the electric trucks?

Hey HeliTB, like my new avitar? its the Piccolo.
Don't think it will fly like that now.....maybe if I put some parts into her. Got tired of the ole Pizzia box flyer as an avitar.

Besides this Christmas week my son and I butchered it to make a sort of a snow boat/plane thingy. lol

The nitro ran great after two years but the skids we made came from two Wally World foamies fusalages made it track too straight so we couldne steer it worth a crap.
Had fun though and still saved the main guts for next year.

No need to change the spur. The smaller means the motor doesn't work as hard, which translates into a faster turning motor putting less draw on the battery which means it runs cooler.

The avatar is nice. Why can't you fly like that? You have Shogun. LOL

Geeesh......give me a chance, give me a chance........as Henry Winkler said in "An American Christmas Carol"

lol

The next avitar will be the Shogun. I care more that I don't destroy it then I did the Piccolo. I know the Piccolo was my first. My "First" has never survived long.
lol
'
I better order some pinions.

I can't talk much. My avatar is my HoneyBee CP2 (Blade CP Pro look a like or should I say the CP Pro looks like the HB CP2). Also I just to point where I'm beginning to explore forward flight. I can hover like a crazy man all day, but that's not real flying.

Ok so I am outside and working on practicing my hovering....See I am the dummy trying to stay close to the ground. Don't do that!

I keep weaving around and tick a chunk of snow or ice (ya, we have some snow banks but they are only several inches high) and every time I "tick" this hard snow almost ice (crusty) I loose a set of blades.

The plastic blades are very brittle and its $16 a pop...............

So ya, I know I should be up between 3 ft and 6 ft for practicing, did that later.

So I went on a search for cheap blades.....found some dam nice ones at www.cnchelicopter.com for $10. Then I ran accross a BB post about making your own???? I said WHOA!

Hell, I can make about anything if I have to and checked it out. Basically you get the paint stirring sticks from you local paint store and cut them to match, and sand them to match.
It works! it really does.

Feels close enough to the factory plastics and can chop snow better than a lawn mower. lol

Still break them but its not easy to and I don't totally care cause I can make more.

Oh, after a bad crash cause my bevel gear came off (loosened and spun free) of the carbon fiber tail shaft, Not only did I bust a blade, I bent my main rotor shaft. Good thing I got a spare.

Just remember, wooden home made blades are very dangerous!!!!
Remember to balance that crap out of them. I use colored plastic tape.
Match the airfoil. I use a belt sander and sand paper.
Keep in mind to match the wood color too, the heart wood is darker and heavier. Try to find sticks that have the same color and grain type.
