Default Brushless and three in one.

OK. Confused again - thanks to all those who have un-confused me in the past. I have now gone brushless on the main motor and followed the directions in the manual. When I first set it up, the brushless motor was very jumpy/skipping along. Thought I had bent the main shaft putting on the pinion. I did not. I had a faulty E-Flite ESC that caused the motor/battery/esc to heat severely within a minute or two of running it. Had a spare 20A esc that I am now using and works just fine, but have not been able to get the tail operating correctly since. I have a G90 gyro on the heli and I am using the the 3 in 1 as described in the manual setup for the brushless option.

When I hook it all up, the tail motor only comes on when the throttle reaches a certain point and then seems to accelerate incrementally with the throttle, not with the rudder control. The rudder control has no effect over the rudder blade speed. It is as if the throttle controls it. That is the case whether the g90 is in line or bypassed. I also have a seperate esc that I was hooking up to the tail motor to replace the 3 in 1 and no option really works. With the gyro armed, quickly moving the heli in either direction does not cause any tail rotor action.

Any ideas?

I'll ask the first few questions that come to mind.

Are you using the stock transmitter or a computer radio? If you are using your own computer radio, did you enable revo mixing? Revo mixing should be inhibited with a HH gyro.

When using a separate setup, only one of the two ESCs should provide power to the receiver. Same thing with a ESC and a 3in1. You should remove the power pin in the ESC connector to the receiver.

Maybe the ESC running the tail motor in the 3in1 is toast? Using a second external ESC for the tail brings its own lot of problems. Like how to initiate the safety function on the tail motor ESC. Needs a lot of fine tuning to make it work in my experience.

Nothing new here, just a few thoughts to get the conversation going.

Good luck,
Georges

Thanks. Good questions. Missed giving some background.

I am using the DX7 with 6000 rx. I removed the BEC lead from the ESC so only one BEC feed is getting to the rx. Revo is off since I am using HH gyro. I was thinking maybe the 3 in 1 was toast as well as maybe barbequing the seperate ESC though I have tried two so far.

Right now I have the 3 in 1 on the bird and the funny thing is how the tail rotor kicks in at a certain throttle level and then increases with as the throttle goes up, but does not vary with rudder input or when manually swinging the heli left and right.

I hope the first ESC that got pretty hot did not pop the rx on the rudder channel. I guess I need to hook a servo up to the rudder and make sure I get full control with that, then move down the chain to the ESC.

Thanks for the thoughts. Keeps my brain running over the possibilites.

Allright. Stupid solution. I had two bad ESCs and had decided to go back to the 3 in 1 to make sure it was the ESC, but at first it wasn't working at all then. Through all the chasing and frustration I mistakenly hooked the tail motor up to the main rotor connector on the 3 in 1 which completely explains the tail moving with the throttle action only. Boy am I stupid!!! Too many wires, too much chasing multiple problems.

Thanks for the help though. It made me rethink the problem.
