I just got my grandson a CX2 for xmas and was trying to find out what extra parts to get. He is new so there will be plenty of broken parts i'm sure. What do yo think i should stock-up on. Up-grades also. Also what up-grades does it take to be able to fly outside?

You should get plenty of blades (Upper and Lower). Usually you can just bend back the flybar instead of replacing it. Some shafts might get bent in a crash, but it wasn't that common for me.
My personal opinion is upgrades for the CX2 don't do much except make it look better. The upgrades that I think are worth it are some Xtreme motors. They have more power and is a lot cheaper to replace the brushes when they go bad instead of having to buy a new stock motor when those brushes go bad. Then maybe a battery with a higher C rating. Those should help a little for outdoor flying. Otherwise the CX2 flies pretty good without upgrades.
The CX2 really isn't ment for outdoor flying unless it is really calm out. To fly outside in almost any wind condition a 450 sized helicopter or bigger is needed.

I already have quit a few higher c rating batteries that will fit, have heard something about a longer shaft and different blades for outside. Some of the batteries i have are about 20g more than the stock battery, will that make a difference?

Usually more weight is more noticeable on a smaller heli, but since those batteries can deliver more power you probably won't notice much of a difference.

You will 100% need the longer shaft mod to fly outdoors.
The blades are close and can touch this causes "blade clack" basically cutting the blade and dropping you out of the sky.
Get any metal upgrades you can.. Inner shaft, blade grips, swash, etc..
I can't remember what metal parts come stock..
Aftermarket motors will definitely help get the speed up and help fight outdoor winds..
