Flymentor test, finally
It looked good on the bench, it spooled up normally on the floor in the basement, it spooled up outside OK but as I got it off the ground about 3 seconds into the hover, it lurched backwards & the tail went into the ground. I'm guessing the Flymentor is no longer working properly.

Flymentor EXI 450 damages
Here's the damages so far not including the bearings in the main blade grips (they feel like a stepper motor!). Oddly enough the feathering shaft seems to be OK.

I took out the 300X today to verify that I can still fly & it probably WASN'T me that crashed the 450! LOL
Ivan at this point I'm assuming the Flymentor failed as it seemed to be working on the ground & for the first few seconds in the air. But what the h3ll do I know???

Chuck, some things I know cause issues with flight controllers are rapid temperature change and vibration. Any chance you had some vibes or the temp from house to outside was substantial?

Finally got around to playing around w/ the downed heli & found the tail blade shaft bent. I never did that before! I'm pretty sure I have all the parts to rebuild it but still wondering if it's worth it if the Flymentor is not working/
Ivan - I did take it from the house to outside but I don't recall the temp difference. I'm guessing like 68° inside to maybe 50° outside! Is that enough to cause problems? That was one of the best tuned up helis you ever did for me, not a spec of vibration.

Flymentor...
So what have you been up to that you've been so busy? A little late to go camping unless you headed south to Philly house!

So I've been trying to fly boxes w/ different helis on the sim & not having much luck. Today there was almost no wind so I took out the mCP X & flew 5.1 packs (1 died after 15 seconds!). I did manage to fly the box but the ole' brain got in the way again. Clockwise was OK but CCW was not so good! I was also flying side to side & instead of turning tail in I made myself turn nose in. That was very interesting. The wind start to pick up a bit & that made the whole more interesting.
Last pack between a gust & panic over correct from nose in, it hit the driveway & snapped a main blade. Fortunately, all previous crashes were in the tall grass & leaves.
It was a good flying day.

Even though I'm prob NOT going to rebuild the Flymentor heli, I thought I'd fix some of the assemblies for the practice. I started on the tail ass'y but the gear & shaft are very sloppy between the frames. I tried three different gears * they were all that way. I then tried a space (4-40 washer) but it was too large a diameter & interfered w/ the bearing. I'm kinda' stuck for a solution. Any suggestions?

Rumors of my death of only been slightly exaggerated...
Holy Cow, how RC Universe has changed!
Chuck-
Glad to read about your exploits, sorry to see so many crashes.
Scott-
Burnt skewers just add to the flavor!
Ivan-
Sorry to read about your losses (damn!). House sounds like it's coming along.
phD-
Keeping it cool!
Between working on RoboSub, then catching up on everything that I put off around the house because of RoboSub, then the end of the Fiscal Year, then the possible lab shutdown (I was really looking forward to a forced vacation, Congress can't even do that right! ) I've had little time for anything else (need to reset my priorities).
I haven't forgotten about you'all, and as a matter of fact, every couple of days I would think, "Man, I need to jump on the forum!". And then I think that again after another couple of days had gone by.
Even though I haven't physically flown in a while, I have mentally. I've been devouring the Flite Test videos on youTube, I've almost watched 'em all. Been using ChromeCast to cast youTube up onto my HD TV in the mornings. It's really nice. They have a lot of foamy designs, the plans are free to download, or you can buy their laser cut foam. To celebrate their +100,000 subscriptions, they are having a 15% off sale @ their store this month. http://shop.flitetest.com/
I'm going to get the Bat Bone tricopter and finally get into FPV. It's a nice fold-able design.

Hi Dave! Welcome back! Fly, boy, fly!
Phil & Scott - I tried many things over the last few days all of which pretty much failed. I was about to try to figure out on how to decrease the length of the spacers extremely accurately but couldn't w/o a lathe. So I was sitting there staring at the tail parts & turning the end plate over in my hand when a thought struck me (And yes it did hurt!) that I could tap out the bearing a bit & that should help since all the forces are against the race & not the ends. So I tapped it out then tapped it back in gently. I now have a nonsloppy tail ass'y. Not sure how reliable it will be but it now acts a lot better than it did. Lotsa' room for tolerance build up in that ass'y.

Dave! You're here! Great to see you again, sir! Robosub Lives!
But... isn't carbon at that level bad for you?
Chuck, Man, I don't know about that bearing stuff. I suppose you're okay as long as there is a method to hold the bearing in, but I'm pretty sure I would take a trip to the LHS to make it more permanent with a washer/spacer.
I dunno, I freak out with tails, now. In a good way, though...

RoboSub was never in question, but my free time, now that's a different story.
Carbon @ that level? Naa... See if you can activate it (Wonder Carbon... activate!), it makes a great filter. Or just call it Blacked - Cajun style and be done with it!
My BatBone tricopter frame and some swapable speed build, foamy planks (Flyer, Nutball and Delta) should be here on Friday. Now I have to get some electronics (RX, Motor, ESC, battery, etc.) to stuff into all of these.
