Operation R/C

Hi,
Some of you may have heard about Frankie Mayo's inspiring effort to provide air conditioners to as many soldiers as possible in Iraq. The effort became known as [link=http://www.operationac.com/dw_pages/rush.htm]Operation AC[/link].
After I received an e-mail from Sergeant Laine Stahr (RCU member 'lmopar69') stationed over in Iraq, I learned about his desire to fly a brushless Zagi Tazz since the sand and harsh conditions grounded his R/C helicopter. Sergeant Stahr had seen my Zagi Tazz review thread on RCU and wanted to know what other support items would be needed so it could be shipped all together. Shipments take a while to get to the soldiers so it is a priority to have everything you need in one shipment.
With the help of a co-worker and ex-VET, I decided to provide more than just advice to Laine and try to solicit exactly what he needs to make his Zagi Tazz fly in Iraq.
Hobby Lobby has become the initial sponsor for "Operation R/C" by donating a complete [link=http://www.hobby-lobby.com/hitec.htm]Hitec Laser 4[/link] FM Radio System with 555 receiver and two HS-81 servos. The 72MHz. radio system includes elevon and V-tail mixing. It is a perfect compliment for the Zagi Tazz.
You can read more about Sergeant Stahr on the Web site created by his brother [link=http://www.stahrenterprises.com/]here[/link].

This is really cool that we can do something for the men and women serving our country. First, hat off to these fine men and women. And hats off to Hobby Lobby for the great donation.
I guess my first question is will his existing helicopter radio support a Ziggy? I agree that we should all pitch in and send some cool RC stuff to Sergeant Stahr, however, I think we should also try to get the most out of the resources that we have available. If his radio will support fixed wing aircraft, maybe Hobby Lobby could supply some planes or accessories.
Are there other vendors willing to make donations or is there something that we can do to help?

I would like to say thanks to Greg and Dennis for doing all of this. You both really are great guys. With any luck this will catch on and maybe some of the members of R/C Universe will find some deployed soldiers to "help out" with some R/C stuff to pass the time over here. I know I will have a great time with the Tazz once it gets here. Once I get it all assembled I will be sure to send some pics and video of it flying. I just hope the AH-64 Apaches that patrol our base dont shoot it down! Then again, that would make one heck of a video! Thanks for everything!

David,
Since Sergeant Stahr was planing on ordering a radio for the Tazz, my assumption was that his heli radio was fubar. Perhaps he can fill us in.
I am soliciting a few other vendors but my main goal was to get him everything he needs to fly a Zagi Tazz. The durable EPP foam wing with the pusher prop configuration in the rear is an excellent candidate for the desert sand and heat in Iraq. The direct drive brushless power system will be much more reliable over time than an R/C helicopter with numerous gears.
As for support items, even a tube of 5-min epoxy, 3M Super 77 spray adhesive, or razor knife would be a welcome donation. These things can be sent to Sergeant Stahr at the address below.

Thank you for your service to our country, it is people like you that make this a great nation and we can never repay you for your selfless commitment to defending our country and making this world free and safe for all people.
Do you know of any other soldiers that fly RC or that want to learn to fly? If so please have them post either here or start another thread here at RCU. Help them post pictures and tells use a little about themselves, I am sure that once we know who they are, we could do to help to make their deployment a little better. I know that Old Lady and I would be glad to do something to help.
Thank you and God Bless you

A little info for everyone if your interrested...
Dont thank me, Im just here for the paycheck... YEAH RIGHT! Nah, this is a job have to love! I drive HETS (big trucks) pictures at www.stahrenterprises.com and I really love what I do, and love the guys/girls who I work with. We deploy ALOT!! Luckily, I have a VERY supportive family to include 3 kids, Carson 11 (flys a Firebird Comander), Leslie 10 (has a elec. stadium truck) and Kameron 3 (drives the other 2 crazy). And of course my wonderful wife Kristy who is there alone, with the 3 kids, trying to keep her sanity. If you think I have it bad over here in Iraq, I wouldnt take her job for any amount of money!
My Heli radio from last year is at home. The helicopter didnt fare to well out here last year (we did a year here, 7 months at home and now we are back again for another year). Mainly due to sand and crashes. When you have 30-100 soldiers standing around watching you fly, someone always pipes up with "Hey why dont you try to (insert something insane here)..."
So, I decided to bring my GP Slinger this year. It was doing fine until one fateful day some schmuck turned on a device we call a "Warlock". Basically, it is a powerful electronic device some vehicles use for jamming etc... anyway, at the time this guy turned it on I was in the middle of some inverted playing at about 80 feet. The slinger instantly pile drived itself into the ground at full throttle. The radio and reciever (Hitec Flash TX and 555 RX) didnt take to kindly to the "Warlock" and are now, shall we say, Toasted. That is when I decided just to buy a Zagi Tazz. I had read about them a little. So I did some more research, and saw Gregs review and emailed him for more info. Well, things snowballed and now Greg is my new best freind that I have never met in person!
Anyway, I have about 10 guys in my platoon of 60 (300 in my company) who have been bugging me to teach them to fly. So, I figure I can fix the Slinger and use that as a "trainer" for them. As of right now, there is no one else in my platoon that has ever flown R/C. A lot of us have raced cars/trucks, but Im the only fly guy...so far. As soon as I can, I will be teaching them to fly. Even my LT wants to learn.
Anyway, thank you to everyone who is helping support this. All of us over here really appreciate it.

I have a used but very flyable Aerobird that Old Lady and I would be willing to donate, if you are interested. It would make a great little trainer. Let me know what you think.

If you are willing to send it, Im sure I could teach some of them to fly it!! That is extremly nice of you to do for us. Thank you. I will PM you with one of the guys address if you want to send it over. Basically its the same as my address, only with a different name. Be sure to pack it well though, US Army postal system isnt known for their care in handling packages. Also, on the customs form, dont put Radio controlled airplane, it will never make it here. Put toy plane or something. Other wise the Air Force or the Army guys that handle the mail could "lose" it right into their posession. Unfortunatly that happens occasionally. Once again, thank you very much!

I sent you a pm. but just in case. The aerobird is ready to fly but, I am going to the LHS to get some spare parts to send as well. My wife works for a company that makes boxes, so we will get a custom made box that will survive the trip and it will have no obvious markings on it. I have never sent a package over seas, do I need to declare what is in the box to customs? If so I will mark it "toy plane".
We are going to look for some local sponsors to see if we can do a little more.
Thank you

I talked to Bill Scott the owner of the Casleton, and Grenwood Hobby Town USA stores in Indianapolis. He donated 2 wings, 2 propellers and a spare tail for the Aerobird that we are sending. We should have a nice care package to send to you in a couple of days.

Wow, thank you. I told Doug, one of the guys who wants to learn, that you were sending it too him. He was pretty excited about it. He wanted me to tell you thank you very much. Please let the owner of the hobby store know how much we appreciate him donating the extra parts.
You will have to put the contents on a customs form, no big deal at all. When my wife sends expensive things to me, she either leaves it off the form or puts something vague like you said "toy plane".
Thank you again!

I have a bunch of RC stuff laying around...I will have to take a look at what I have and I would be willing to part with some items. Please list any items that yall might need overthere and I will see what I have. Although most of it might not be for small electrics but I will see..... if I do find some items it would be nice if I could send them to someone that is getting stuff ready to ship overseas and I could send them to that person here in the U.S. and they could ship all of them together. off hand I know I have the stock Zagi esc and brushed motor that could go

OK, here is the deal, I have noticed that there have been 151 viewings of this thread at the time of this post, post 16, only 4 people have contributed. I realize that not everybody has a plane sitting around that you can send overseas, but what do you have? Maybe some epoxy, some batteries for the Aerobird transmitter (it takes 8 AA batteries), some servos, exacto blades, what ever. How about just a thank you to Laine and Doug.
I talked with the owner of my local Hobby Town USA for three minutes and he agreed to donate some spare parts for the Aerobird. Tomorrow we will be checking into corporate sponsorship to help cover the cost of overseas shipping. I am a full time college student with four teenage kids and I have found a way to help. Lets face it we can afford to be involved in this hobby, we can afford to give just a little as well. If everybody would give just a little bit, Laine, Doug and their fellow service men, could get a much needed break from a tough job, defending our country, our freedom and the freedom of others.
To help you understand the type of person Laine is, I opened a pm from him this morning. I will not post it as I assme he wanted it kept private, but after he expressed his thanks he asked if there was anything he could do for me. Personnally, I think that two tours of duty in a war zone is more than we should ever ask!
Thank You and God Bless

Fred thank you for the donation!
Laine
Fred at DCRC is going to send you a BAT. It is a fantasic plane I have bouced mine off of several trees and the kid's trampoline. It flys great, I flew mine in 8 mph winds with 13 mph gusts today. It is a great little acrobat.
What channel is your radio? I am trying to get some more donations and if we knew your channel maybe we could get somebody to donate a reciever..
Does anybody have a spare reciever that is compatable with a Hitec radio? How about some batteries? Or a GWS 300 C or 350 C to go with the BAT?

First off, THANK YOU ALL!!! This really is more than I EVER would have expected anyone to do for us! I really dont think I can express just how much this will mean to my buddies and I. You guys are just great!
What I have here, right now is a Great Planes Slinger with a speed 400, 2 stock batteries for it, a GP 12v charger, and I have a Duratrax Intellipeak charger on the way AC and DC. The Slinger is flyable if I get the electronics fixed on it. Let me explain...
The radio that I have here right now is a Hitec focus 4 on channel 46 (72.710), I was using a 555 reciever with it but the reciever is now inoperable. As far as I know the TX is still fine. Although Im not certain (no way to test) if it really is the RX thats bad. Could be crystals, RX, TX. Most likely the massive "surge" that was put through the RX by a Army device used for jamming radio signals killed it. I was flying in a place I didnt expect that device to be used. Live and learn. So that pretty much sums up what I have here right now.
As far as tools, I have my air powered Dremel tool with some bits, my air drill, and electric drill, soldering iron, and a couple tiny screw drivers. Thats about it.
I will start to list some info on the soldiers that have expressed interest in learning to fly. Im sure 90% of them would do it given the opportunity, but they just havent asked. Anyway, here are a few of them, I will also put our address at the end.
We are a HET (Heavy Equipment Transport) unit. That means we haul Tanks, with REALLY REALLY huge trucks. We stay pretty busy on the road, but we usually get downtime after each mission to wash clothes, fix trucks etc... and sometimes even entire days where we do NOTHING!! Anyway, you can see the trucks at www.stahrenterprises.com Here we go...
SSG Doug Clayton - Doug has some r/c experience. He has a Associated RC10GT that I convinced him to buy when we came home after our tour here last year. He saw me fly my slinger and asked me to teach him.
SPC Paul Dowdy - Paul is my room mate over here. He has zero exp. with any r/c but has been bugging me to fix my slinger and teach him.
SSG Greg Reese - Greg is the Harley guy in the platoon. He also has no exp. with r/c other than he used to have a walmart type r/c car.
SGT Jericho Beauchamp - Cool guy, he works in our MWR right now, so he gives me unlimited time to send these posts on the computers instead of making me get off after 30 min like everyone else has to! Also no real r/c exp.
SGT Chris Caron - Chris has a little exp. with r/c cars but not with flying.
SGT Troy Davis - Troy is another interresting individual. Troy analyzes everything. VERY smart guy and a good friend.
1LT Fred Kelo - This is my platoon leader (officer). We have to keep him happy, cuz when the boss man is happy, we are happy! He has a degree in meteorology. Go figure, now he is a Army Transportation Officer!
Well, that is some of the guys, I will have my camera here in a few days, and I will be able to start posting some pictures of everyone, especially when they learn to fly.
Once again, I cant thank all of you enough! This is just great.

Laine,
Do you have an alternate mailing address in the U.S. that people can send things to?
My shipping department said that the APO zip code doesn't show up for UPS which means they need customs papers to let it ship overseas.
Regards.

My shipping department said that the APO zip code doesn't show up for UPS which means they need customs papers to let it ship overseas.
Regards.

I dont think anything can be sent here with UPS. Im pretty sure you have to use regular post office snail mail. Greg, I sent you a PM with my home address in Kansas. My wife said she would be happy to forward anything over here to us. I dont want to post my home address here though, especially since Im not there. So, I guess, either things can be sent directly over here using the post office, or you can send them to my wife to forward. What ever works I guess. Thank you!
