I'm repairing the FunJet and will post pics when complete

I'll be using the MircoDan exp. motor on the plane lite and fast.....

Come to find out I have a strange arm throw motion whichs causes the plane to roll left really bad........I"ll have to retrain myself on the launch.........and I thought it was the plane.

One of the clubs guys caught it on vid. and showed me.....only shows up when I grap the fuse...if I use fingers as on my Stryker it does not show up....weird huh

Hey all! Its been aloooong time since I've posted on here. Was wondering if any of you aka... Chippedprop, have ever wound there own motors for flying? I'm poor and started winding my old Wicked Don motors that I had burnt out on my strykers and funjets. Not too hard to do, and saves money!

I have a bungee launcher now for my fj. Where do you guys recommend putting the hook on the fj it's self?

Have not wound my own motors I have sat and watched Micro Dan wind them...does take practice

Bungee hook..........I would place just inside where battery bay starts as from the nose...so you could use a long thin bolt nut to make sure the hook does not move...CF rod reverse angled would work too.

Yup, still here on the islands! Will probably retire here (I hope) Been flying home built jobs lately, my fav LHS went out of business, so I've been going online and looking how to make own planes/motors.

Hi Guy's
We made up a bungee setup and have been launching fjs and miglets all summer without any mishaps.
blkz, as far as locating a hook on a fj, heres the formula.. measure from the nose to the c of g, take that measurement and go back 2/3 from the nose thats where your hook should be. I used a piece of 1/8 ply hot glued in and havent had a failure. 3m also makes plastic hook's with a glue strip on the back { i think they are meant for picture hangers} but dont use the glue strip just hot glue it to the bottom
We don't use any kind of launch stand , but we did make a foot trigger. just stretch the bungee, hook to the plane and the foot pedal and launch it right off the ground. Just don't forget to make sure that your throttle lock is off, i made that mistake once and was only a couple of feet off the grass before I got the power on....oops...lol.
My fj wiegh's in at 30 ozs and i'm using 12.5 lbs of tension on the bungee.
Give it a try it's a blast and much safer for you and your plane

set up stuff

Motor is a MicroDan exp. model 2700 kv and can swing a 6x4 prop on 4 cells
Scorpion 90 amp esc
Dimension engeering bec
Hitec 82 mg servos
turnigy 4 cell 30-40c 2650 ma
Flight weight 31 oz

Video coming........we set out last week to shoot and had a bad soldier joint ...which failed.....I was taping...but missed the high speed (70+) landing and insueing ground loop cart wheel....no damage to the plane (it's build like a tank)

I repaired and have flown it 2 x's since.....Flys great.....good vert. climbs and Ok speed......This is the same motor I filmed on the Stryker

RE: FUNJET

Hey all, got 2 questions.
1. Is the CA one end and Kicker the other really strong enough? I don't know any other way since they said Epoxy will not work. I usually use epoxy for tails and wings and fins but...
2. I read through a lot of the thread and got my motor/prop/ESC/Batt set-up (4S) but would it be possible to post say the top 5 or so most important mods/build tips for the plane. I think that would help a lot of people out. I not talking about glassing the hole thing for 150+ MPH or modifying the hatch for 12S just basic stuff...
Thanks

RE: FUNJET

Hi Gregg......I've used both Ca and hot glue to assemble fj's. Both method's work fine and i haven't had anything come apart at high speed {120 mph}. I prefer using ca because it's easier to use but i don't use kicker. I let it dry naturally because kicker dries the ca too fast and won't let it soak into the pore's of the foam, this causes a surface bond, it's the same idea when glueing ca hinge's.
I'm using Hobbycity medium ca, it's cheap {$4 for a big bottle} and seem's to work well.
Everybody has their own favourite Fj mod's but here's mine in order

1. glue the canopy and turtledeck together. Then recut about an inch ahead of the motor cooling duct. This give's you easier access to motor wires and esc . now the esc can be properly secured instead of dropping all your gear down through the tail of the plane.

2. Replace the stock wing tube with a carbon fibre tube and extend it to within 1in of the wingtips

3. Sand {do not cutoff} the wingtip tank's to match the wing profile. They alway's catch in the grass and break anyways

4. Fiberglass the bottom of the fuse and sanded wingtip's. This stiffen's the fuse, tie's in the extended carbon fiber tube and you wont have chunk's of foam missing if you hit a stone in the grass. I used 1/2 oz fiberglass and polycryllic instead of resin.

well there's my 2 cent's worth. I'm sure there will be many differing opinion's.
Good luck with the build and have fun

Hey
I have not posted in a while......any way I do have the FJ repaired and now flying.....it's powered witha new Micro Dan out runner.......not smoking fast but a great all around performing plane I'll get some vid. shot.

The last vid. effort resulted in a crash due to a loose soldier joint............flight lasted about 45 seconds.........with a high speed landing ...with cart wheel very nice and I MISSED the shot......cool weather is here in the south so it's time to crank up the power!!!!

HOW ARE YOU GUYS BEEFING UP THE FINS WITH C/F? PIX
I just painted on a mix of epoxy and powder over the whole thing after installing 2 square tubes of CF .
Hinges are made by Robart, and popularized by Chippedprop

Motor; MEGA 16-25-1.5 (3000kv)
ESC; ICE 100
Battery; 4s5000(45/90)
Receiver; AR7000
Servos; HiTec HS5065mg
Prop; Graupner 5.5x5.5
Pitch speed from static test; well over 175 mph
Maiden; DUE

I am thinking of painting it FJ Ultra grey, this way I can trick everyone into thinking its an ULTRA [:-]

Nice I can't wait to see it go!!! I think I am going to build another CF funjet for those speeds I just don't know if the prototype is up for it. There's a few things I want to change and clean up on the molds and how I put it together

What happened to the prototype ?
What are you altering ?

I dont believe my FJ pictured will be contending for max speed honors, more of a reliable fast flier.
Whats your best opposite direction pass average on the prototype ??
Only list the setup (motor, batt, prop, ESC) if you wish to.

I still have the prototype and it still flys good with 3000kv and a 2100 3cell not fast
I will be fixing the mold where the rear canopy meets the fuse. The fuse is about a 1/6 to wide and after sanding to make the canopy fit it got really thin and then my buddy Stacy dropped it right on the prop and it cracked all the way down the edge of the tray not a big deal at 100mph but 180+ I don't know and theres a lot of money in esc and batt

I will also be making a jig for gluing the top and bottom half together and making the servo pockets deeper and the ailerons way smaller to cut back the chance of fluter.
The Nemesis fluttered so bad last weekend in a dive in 45mph wind it brook about 2" on both sides of the elevator and I blow up a aileron servo in the Sunracer doing the same thing and toughs control surface are 1/4 the size of the Funjets The air speed indicator reading was 250.5 mph in the dive that brook the elevator but I think I got it fixed to get a good doppler recording

the funjet set up
160 ice
4 cell 5000 45c Hyperion
2850 kv Typoon
6x4 Carbon Fiber prop I made
and the co2 cooling for the motor
I have all of this and if I put it in the prototype I'll make a parachute for the batt and esc encase it blows up in the air LOL

RE: FUNJET

Ok
I am done with FUNJETS. I crashed and trashed the current one. I changed to a lower power/ longer flight itme set up.

Flying in the city in a open space> Plane top speed about 60 70 turning a 8x5 prop on a out runner.....any way flying over and around the back of some buildings made a turn diving over the top of the blding.....plane goes POOF.....what the crap...I didn't hit the blding.....I did know the group in the blding...so I went up on the roof to get the plane and to make sure no damage and to safe the battery.......guess what..... there is a wire hand rail system around the top and you can't see it from flight distance.....
So the plane is in about 20 pieces and due to the expense of a new frame I'M DONE.

YOU ALL PLAY NICE
PEACE OUT
CHIPPEDPROP
