31 cc ryobi on a ultra stick

Ken Lambert has done one with a Homelite 25cc, and he says it's perfect. Ryobi should have the same power or a touch more. I think Ken used the magneto ignition, and had to add a couple of ounces of lead to the tail. I'm doing one for my next project, (with the Homelite), and I'm using electronic ignition so I don't think I'll have to use any weight for balance.
BTW, we are talking about the biggest stick right? The Ultra Lite Stick 120?
Good luck,

You should sorta figure where the prop is supposed to be using one of the recommended engines. Then see how much you will have to move the firewall back to sorta get to prop for the Ryobi in the same place. The Ultra Stick (orginal) often comes out tail heavy and the Ultra Stick Lite comes out nose heavy with any thing heaver than a Saito single. The lite needs a little creatitive crafting to mount servos in the tail.

I had a Ryobi & a Homelite on the old style Ultra Stick 120 & moved all the servos for the tail to the rear. I also added a second one for the elevators. 3 total in the tail & thats what it took to balance it. I would venture to say the new Lite version will probably need even more weight back there. Just guessing though.

Hi,
Ken was a little sparse on the details when we asked him, but I got the impression that he pretty much just bolted the Homelite 25cc on, added a strip of lead weights to the tail, and went flying! He said it flew great, and "was a perfect match". I'm hoping with my installation without the magneto that I will balance ok with no weight nor modifications. tkg is right though; I would temporarily hang the engine on front, and see how it balances. It may come out ok, or it may come out a bit nose heavy in which case you might want to think about mounting the servos in the rear, or if it is real nose heavy, you may want to move the firewall back. The Ryobi is narrower than the Homelite, but longer which would move the balance point forward. All you can do is mock it up and check it out.
Good luck,

Moved some things around. Rudder servo pull pull aft, Elev servo aft (single), radio & 4.8 bat aft, (FWIW TE prop is 8" fwd of supplied ply motor mount. Ended up with about 3/4 oz lead near TE hor stab.
If I were doing it again, probably alum standoffs instead of engine mount pictured. I'm still learning and the plane needs 6V bat which would more than offset the small lead added.
Plane balances to midpoint of suggested CG.
tkg: On the G23, could you give us an idea of distance forward of firewall to the prop? I just centered the engine on the supplied mount.

mikenlpaz, You are showing fotos of the old heavy weight Ultrastick. I think GATTUS02170, is shouting about the new Ultrastick lite. There is a big difference. I did very much the same thing with my old heavy weight when mounting a Homelite 30 as you did with yours.

thanks for all the help guys as soon as it gets here i guess i find out i am going to just dummy the motor up and see how it balances i am a little lighter than stock because my flywheel is shaved and i have an aluminum muffler if you guys have anything else i would love to here it. the most important thing is it looks like i may not have to move the firewall if i rear mount the servos and get a little luckey

I have an old Ultra Stick 120 (not lite) and I put the servos in the tail and a McCulloch 28cc with elect. ignition and didn't have to move anything or add weight for balance. I still have not flown it yet as I am waiting for new servos (and will re-balance at that time). I just bolted up to the existing firewall location.
I wish I had the lite version as 2 1/2 pounds lighter would be great. Even if I had to put a half pound in the tail it would still be better.
I'll let you know how it flies hopefully in a week or two.

HEY KEN THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE I HAVE READ AND LEARNED A LOT FROM TREDS THAT YOU STARTED AND\OR CONTRIBUTED TO. I WILL GIVE THE 16x12 A TRY IT FLYS PRETTY GOOD NOW IT WILL HOVER (AT FULL THROTTLE) BUT I REALLY EXPECTED MORE OUT OF HER MORE TOP END SPEED AND LIKE A 1\2 THROTTLE HOVER WITH UNLIMITED VERT. HOPEFULLY BRINGING THE RPM UP WITH THE SMALLER PROP WILL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE I AM LOOKING FOR. THANKS AGAIN, DON

I'm doing one for my next project, (with the Homelite), and I'm using electronic ignition so I don't think I'll have to use any weight for balance.
BTW, we are talking about the biggest stick right? The Ultra Lite Stick 120?
Good luck,

AV8TOR, How are you doing on your Ultra Stick Lite project? I just got mine yesterday. I t sure looks good. I have been flying a 60 sized with a OS 91 4 stroke on it for about a month and it is wonderful. I hope the 120 is better. I have not yet decided on what engine to use on the 120. I have a Homie 30 with C@H that I converted a couple years ago for my ULS 120 (heavyweight)
That I might put on the new one or I might do something else. I am thinking of a SAITO 180 or maybe a G26 or even trying one of the G26 conversions from Davesmotors at http://www.davesmotors.com/store/index.html
I have triyed to seach on rcuniverse for the different build threads on the 120 lite and haven't found any. I can't beleive there isn't any. Must be something wrong with my search method.
Keep me posted on your project, I will do the same.

Hi,
I too am surprised at the lack of action in the forum about the Ultra Lite stick. I've got mine out on the bench, I've read through the instructions, and I might start on it tonight if I am not too tired. I think it's going to be a great model.
I'm going to use my Homelite 25cc converted to electronic ignition on mine. Ken Lampert did one like this, and said it was the "perfect combination." I imagine your Homey 30 would work well, or the G-26 if you want to stick with gas.
Good luck and keep us posted please.
