I just bought two of these things from Northern Tool for $49 each. I am having trouble getting the flywheel off so I can unbolt the flange. The shaft coming off the flywheel has a nut on it but from what I've read the flywheel should just come off by prying it. It is a ZR700R model and did not have a clutch on it. I think this is the short shaft version but not sure, it does have two rings on the piston. I've tapped in several places with a regular hammer and pried with two screw drivers but I don't want to try any harder because I can see it moving and don't want to bend the shaft. Any ideas?
Does anyone know of any P-38s flying with two of these?
Thanks!

I have not tried to take flywheel off the ryobi. I have takin them off a shindaiwa and a poulan with a wheel puller and it works great. If you don't have a wheel puller i'm not sure how you would get it off.

Okay so I do need to take the center nut off? It is attached to a shaft that is about an inch long with a square in the middle for going onto the weedeater shaft. I tried turning it but it wouldn't budge so I thought it was attached to the flywheel and all the conversion instructions I can find don't mention anything about it.

The opening in the end of that shaft has a torx head bolt in it. Take that out and the collar will come off of the shaft. Then the flywheel should come tight off..

Got it!
I cranked hard on that nut to break it loose and after unscrewing it and a little tappy tap tap on the flywheel it came right off.
Thanks!
FWIW, there was no torx head in the shaft.

When you get ready to install tighten up the prop hub or prop nut, try removing the the plug and stuffing some 1/8" or so cord into the cylinder head and let the piston press against it while tightening the ph or prop nut.
Also works for holding shaft on removal of that sometimes pesky center torq bolt!
Liquid Wrench or wd-40 with heat as mention above help also.

Hold the flywheel with a large pair of channel locks either around the magnet or around the counterbalance, turn the nut counter clockwise. it is a 5/16 - 24 thread.
after you have the nut off you can tap the flywheel and it will pop off, you may have to pry gently on one or two sides with a screwdriver while you tap.

I stand corrected, I've only converted long shafts so far.
Hoping to make one fit in a H9 PT-19. We'll see if it fits this weekend, I'm just a little worried about the flywheel hitting the cowl.

Did you get the engine to fit the PT-19? I did some looking and I guess H9 doesn't make that plane anymore, I found some old reviews for it. I wonder if the engine would fit in the H9 1.50 P-51 Mustang. They recommend that inline 200 Saito twin so it might be long enough. I was originally wanting to put mine in a Four Star 120 but would rather not build anything.
