I see alot of older motors out there with points ignition, is there a universal conversion kit out there, or not ??. The motor I'm actually looking at is out of a Poulan 361 chainsaw, 59cc with points.
Thanks, flyrc

Hi RC,
If you can pickup a more modern solidstate coil that will fit, it should work with your flywheel. You may want to go to CDI for a large engine due to kickback. Get one with syncro spark auto advance or use a heavyduty starter. They used to have a points eliminator kit at saw shops for about $15. You probaly have to get that big engine spinning at about 400rpm to start it.

I used one of the points eliminator units on my Quadra 40 to cure a glitch problem. If I could fix the glitch another way and go back to the points I would. Without going to electronic ignition, the points type system was easier to start and idled lower. I wouldn't change unless there was a problem. My 3.7 Sachs has points, starts very easy and idles at 1300 rpm.

It sounds like another case of if it ain,t broke don't fix it. Solidstate can be hard to start.

Hmm, so points may be a good thing?? The actual amount of run time on these engines is only a couple hours a year for most of us. If there are no other drawbacks,a new set of points should last for years.
