Someone at the club crashed his (nothing too serious) Raven and gave it to a friend of mine. My buddy just wanted to fix it, which he did, then gave it to me. Has everything but an engine, receiver, and battery. From my understanding the guy had a .91 four stroke engine on it and said that a comparable sized engine would be around .60 two stroke. From what I have seen from my google searches, this is most likely a global 62" ws kit.
I was thinking about putting an 18cc featherlite engine on it but decided to ask the people that might know better whether a: this would be a decent fit (I don't want to hover or anything), and b: are there any other small gas engines that would do a good job of pulling this plane around?
I don't expect stellar performance, just want to do something different.
If it's the Global Kit, here is the most information I can find on it.

Following those suggestions, I wonder if a 20-22cc wouldn't be out of the question.
What do you think?

Check out these posts regarding the 16cc Echo engine.

Here is the picture of the one I have. I want to sell it. $80.00 as it is in the picture. An ignition from CH is $89.95.

Good deal, it'll have to wait for Christmas though ;( If I had the cash, I'd buy it now. If you're interesting in trading for anything, pm me what you're looking for or anything you'd be interested in (electrics, engines, helicopters, etc). I also have a converted 31cc Ryobi (magneto) I'd be willing to trade for it.
Anyone know what model trimmer this comes out of? I couldnt' find it on the Echo website. Is it the KE-140DA engine?

wufnu,
You could buy it now and run it on gas/glow mix. It would save a bunch of weight as well as the cost of a CH unit. You could go with CH later, when more money is available. All it would take is a glow plug adapter an a hot plug.

I thought it already had a CH on it
It wasn't the engine + ch that was too expensive, just the $80. At the very earliest I'm looking at early December, right now I make just enough to pay for school and gas. I'm sure you know how it is. This has been the greatest month; somehow I've had people actually FORCE me to accept four glow planes for nothing, two of which are complete save receiver. Unfortunately, they all need $50 here, or $100 there to get them in the air. o.O "Why do you give me this? I can't do anything to it for months!"
I still haven't been able to find out the models of Echo trimmers this engine is in, anyone know? Would be fun to find one cheap or free, grind it down a bit, buy a muffler and glow plug adapter. I've always wanted to try the methanol/gasoline mix, it really seems the way to go. No onboard battery, no heavy magneto, no nothing. And it's cheap! Don't want to sound like a broken record, but at this time the glow fuel would really be a cost factor: I fly alot
If anyone has one of these 16cc (or 18cc Featherlite, I still think that would be a good motor... the plane was described by the previous owner as "heavy") converted, I have a converted Ryobi here looking for a good plane. Unfortunately I have nothing large enough to put it in.

The 18cc Featherlite is light, but not very powerful. The Echo would be much better. I don't think the 16cc Echo has been made for quite some time, so it may be hard to find used. If I remember correctly it was marketed with various numbers from GT-1000 to 1600.... same engine. The 21 to 25cc Echos weigh only slightly more than the 16cc but have more power. The 16cc Echo would be nice on Gas/Glow, as it would help keep the weight down as much as possible, and increase the power a little. I sure like the Echo engines myself...

Probably less than 3/4 of a pound. I have a 21cc and it flew very well in the 60 size Seagull Models Edge we had it in. The engine is for sale also. Same $80.00 buys it too. Again an $89.95 CH ignition will be all you need to add.

Is the 3/4lb the difference between the 16 and 21 cc engines? How much does the 21 weigh?
I hope you find someone to buy your engines, I simply cannot right now.

Yeah, I think my last Echo/Kioritz 23.6cc engine weighed 2 lbs. 9 ounces with the muffler, prop adapter, engine mount, etc. included. Remember that when you compare to a glow engine, the glow engine will need a mount that is not included in the spec'd weights. On mine, I just use studs straight through the firewall from the back of the engine. (No separate mounting plate like you often see.) Glow engines also need larger fuel tanks and need to carry more weight in fuel.

Tough decisions! Is the 3/4lb extra too much!? Who knows?! When Global discontinues a kit they remove all evidence it ever existed
I guess their .60 kit wasn't a very popular version (.40 version seems to be what I find mostly on google), I can't find any dang specs. In fact, all I can find is from right here at RCU: "Power Class: Glow (.60 - .89)". One of the guys in the ratings section mentions trying a 1.20, other than that I'm lost o.O
I appreciate the help, fellas.

Just weighed the airframe on the bathroom scale (only accurate to .5 lbs) at got 6lbs without any engine, receiver, battery. Has servos. 2-3lbs doesn't sound like a problem at all and I really think I would need the extra power for the added weight. With a 21-23cc Echo, I expect without fuel it would come in around 10lbs ready to go, that sound right to you guys? AND, if there is any weight in the tail that will likely be able to be removed (on the other hand, if there is no weight in the tail there might have to be some added). What are you guys getting on the 16cc, 7-8lbs thrust?
The guy from BME says the 23.6 is the way to go, and 2lbs9oz doesn't sound bad at all.
Were you running yours on methanol, Av8tor? If not, I could probably subtract another 8oz for the large battery pack. I read the thread on the 30%methanol/gasoline mix but didn't consider running on straight methanol. What type of oil did you use, Wal-mart 2c oil or castor?

That weight figure was without the ignition system. I'm running everything on Gas/Glow right now. You can run them on straight methanol with about 2 to 3% oil, but you may have to buy a special carb or modify the one you will have on the engine to flow enough fuel. Read the thread about Gas/Glow, the best mix is 10% nitro & 10% oil glow fuel mixed at one part to two parts of high test gasoline. We did a lot of testing and experimenting to come up with that mix, and it works with standard carbs with only a slight adjustment needed to the regulator in some cases. You can get a glow plug adapter for a Zenoah engine from Horizon Hobbies, and you need to use a good four stroke plug from either OS or Saito.

I read that thread a month or two, that's where I got the 30% from. It just wasn't methanol, it was 10/10 glow fuel
"Everything's already mixed!" Seems to have the best of everything, no wonder the idea is catching.
