I usually start my petrol engines by manually choking the carb with my finger and ignition off. Then start with a tickover speed until it warms up. The DL I have to use the real choke to prime it as the inlet is buried in the fuz. So I need a choke of one sort or another.
The McCulloch I have is a bit finicky and needs proper 1/2 choke for a few seconds whilst running or it bogs and stops.
Why do you want to do without the choke?

I had to choke mine. Used a slide plate. That was with a starter too. Gotta remember mine was old and wore out when I coverted it. Edwin
