Ok guys
I need some information as to what would be the easiest and best chainsaw to convert for airplane use. I need at least 38cc. Please be specfic with make model and or bar length I am going to put it in an ultra spad stick that is about finished. I know that a ryobi engine for example might be in a craftsman saw ( this is just an ex.) so as much detail would be great. That way when I go to get an engine I will know what to look for.
thanks for any help I can get

go for a Komatsu Zenoah brushcutter engine , they have these engines in sizes from 23 cc and up. they are a very good and reliable engine [ made in Japan ] all you need to buy seperate is a prop hub.

A lot of the chainsaws are more difficult to convert because the crankcase is part of the saw in general. But the Homelite 33cc and some older 45cc models are easy to convert. The Poulans from 32 to 42cc are easy to convert but must use electronic ignition because the magneto coil mounts on the saw; not on the engine. The Poulans are also a bit heavy, but run well.
The best thing to do is when you find a possible donor saw, look it up in a parts database like Empart to see how it is made and if it will work well for you.

OK,an echCS345 or CS 346 can be rail mounted like a glow engine.Im not sure if the coil is on the block or case, youll have to look them up.These also have very minimal cutting as they just pop out of the saw case with 4 bolts. This engine is 34cc.You did say 38cc but this is close.
An echo CS-4400 is the same way=====44ccthis equals the BME44same engine
Poulan 42rail mount42cc
Echo -45cc-out of blower.Little bit harder to convert as it has a straight shaft and not tapered. But really no big deal.I have a hub started.Ill post a couple pics tommorow when i have daylight.Besides,i cant find my poulan 42,i know its somewhere.I also have a 45ccecho.
Echos and homelites are the easiest and most powerful for the Power to Weight issues. Now dont everybody get in an uproar,i said easiest and power to weight. These are also rail mount motors.

Yes, the Poulan 46cc is pretty popular and a good engine. It is lighter than the 32 to 42cc series and does have the mag mounted on the engine should one desire to use it. I didn't mention it because it is a bit larger than he was looking for.
You can't go wrong with one of Buck's offerings though, especially those Echos....

all the homlite saws at home depot are great canidates.
the smallest one is a 33cc. the mag is attached to the motor, and you can mount it like a glow engine.
They also have a 42cc saw...but if you look on the actual saw, the little sticker that tells you the displaement actually says 46cc!!
then they have 46cc saw. all the motors have the mag attached to the cyl and are ez to convert and make good power.
good luck!!

Guys
thanks for the info. I have a poulan 2800 and the sticker says 2.8cuin what does this calculate to cc? I think it is about 50cc and would be to large. I also have an echo 1100 weedeater I do not know what the cc is on this either. Any additonal info would be great, and will they work? This is my first atempt at converting an engine.
thanks for the help

Hi, I am converting an echo cs-440 chain saw engine now, it is a 45cc engine. Very easy to work with, just unbolt it from the frame of the saw and you have your short block ready to convert. It has beam mounts cast on the crankcase for easy mounting. Brilleillicustoms.com hasthe prop hub ang the intake insulator and hardware kits at a reasonable price. He made them for the BME 50 but they bolt right on.

Ok guys
here we go with more questions I have decided to go with the poulan 45cc engine in my ultra spad stick. If I have read right I will need a 20in. prop which will only give me 3in. of ground clearence what will happen if I go with a 18in prop? Also the engine is an older eng. and has a 3rd line that runs from the crankcase to the carb. is this needed? The carb is not mounted to the eng. solid it has a rubber tube between them, will this be a problm or can you recomend a way to attach it solid to the eng. I have thought about going to gas/glow fuel to cut down on weight by doing away with the flywheel. Any comments here about how hard it might be to start, or should I look for a different engine to convert. This eng. runs great and is very strong it is on an 18in chainsaw.
thanks again for any advise.
