I set my low voltage cutoff for soft reduce power and if available on my ESC I also set it to the highest voltage setting so I don't run my lipos too low.( no cut should be ok as long as it has a way of letting you know the battery is low)
You absolutely want the brake off on a helicopter and you want soft start

I'm using the titan 30a on my hbk2 right now. The first thing you should do is to turn the brake mode off. Brake mode ON means the motor will imediatly stops spining by the force of your battery when you pull the throttle to its lowest position, and is not good for the heli cause you dont want to brake your blades while they're spining and you may crash while landing. It used for planes i think.

The soft start used when you runing the motor conected to a gear like helicopters. Basically when you hit the throttle very fast the motor starts at its high rpm and it takes time for the blades to reach to the motor rpm and simply you may strip the main gear and even break the rotor blades. So with the soft start the motor starts spining at its lower possible rpm then speeds up gently to the certain speed you set by the throttle position to protect the parts. So set it to ON(default setting in titan).

Governor(default off) limits the motor speed and wont let it goes more than what you have set. Gas mode is what I scared of. it starts the motor at very low rpm then goes up very gently(takes about 15 sec) to the highes possible and may goes beyond your motor limits no matter where the throttle stick is. i think its like a gas heli in idle up mode. Anyway I would turn all governor modes OFF.

Motor rotation reverse is another titan advantage and is used when your motor spins in wrong direction you can set it to on or off to get the right direction of rotation. Or simply reverse each two of the three wires conecting the esc to the motor to reverse the motor rotation. DONT reverse the connected battery polarity you will kill your esc forever.

On power cut issue I prefer the reduced rpm mode cause i dont wanna kill the battery by over discharge. And dont worry it wont suddenly turn off the engine it will let you land your heli safely.
If you bought your titan with the Tiwarn system(item no: titan 30pw31) a LED will show you the pack going empty by blinking just before the cutoff goes in.

If you have a titan emitter I recomend reset all those settings
Take a look at this:
http://media.hyperion.hk/dn/titan/titan.htm

Hope this helped

Default RE: PLEASE HELP WITH ESC!

lvc is set at "reduced power" as you dont want the power to go to zero when the battery is low.
Generaly to keep from running the motor till its dead you set the voltage to as high as it will allow. You never want to fly your batteries down to say less then 3.7 volt per cell and unfortunatly most ESC will allow you to do so as they actually only monitor the total volts of the entire pack and even then they still allow you to run them down to nearly nothing. When your battery is low you will see a reduction in power, not enough to crash you but enough you will notice it or you can use a timer to keep you "informed" just fine out about how long you fly and when you hear it go off (oven timer is great for this) you know its about time to land.
Set your brake to "off" The brake is sometimes used on motogliders to stop the motor HARD and fast so the prop can fold correctly. If left On when the motor is shut down the motor will stop dead and the inertia will usually tear damage teeth on the main gear
Soft start is just what it says set it as the softest start you can sometimes called "Extra soft start". This allows the motor to wind up a little slower from a fully closed stick postion, HOWEVER keep in mind that if you suddenly close the stick and open it again it will not soft start. This is to prevent the heli from dropping out of the sky when doing manuvers that requre you to close the stick and open it again within a second or two. Also for a safety precaution. If your Heli battery gets far to low and it cuts out if you close the stick completly and open it again the ESC will reset for a few more secones and allow you to make a emergency landing, when this happens you do not want to be waiting for like 10 seconds for the motor to wind back up again you need all the power you can get at that point and you need it NOW, also your blades are still spinning so that will absorb the motor restarting. For all practical purposes though on Helis it is always set at soft start.
Don't worry about motor rotation as if it is turning the wrong way you will know it right away, the heli will not fly as the blades won't turn thanks to the one way clutch. You will see the main gear spin is all and the tail rotor will spin also,. Just reverse any two of the 3 motor wires that run to the ESC as its a AC 3 phase motor and nothing will hurt it.
Do not worry about setting the governner unless your ESC is actually made for it. It is a long and complicated process. Just turn it to "Off" or not even bother with it (my ESC has it also and I simply skipped it as its "off" by default.
It is used on both electric and gas to set a predeturmined speed (power) range for the motor and maintain that speed (power) at any attitude and pitch setting (pitch setting as load on the motor) . Lots of graphs and charts and tinkering to balance between power and pitch it just right and make any change of any kind after and your back to square one again. Most ESC that have a governer mode also need a PC cable (optional) so you can link to the computer to program the ESC to set up the governer mode.
You will find it "enough fun to last a lifetime" just playing with the throttle and pitch curves anyway. without fustrating yourself attempting to program the system for governer mode, after first minor crash you would be back reprograming it again.
sorry I got a little wordy here but hope it helps

thanks so much for the help guys it is ok if i use the no cut option all the time? i do not want to over discharge the battery but i have a stop watch and when it reaches 6 mins i stop flying on that battery wait for heli to cool down and then use my 2nd battery do you think it is ok to do this i am not doing damage am i??? i am scared of soft cut mode i dont like it lol. also i have no idea how to program the soft cut mode would like to know though! lastly how hot/cold/warm temprature should my esky motor and esc hyperion 30a titan be after lets say a 8 min flight because mine is hot! any help is appreaciated thanks!

Default RE: PLEASE HELP WITH ESC!

Why dont you use the soft cut while your esc has it. Wether or not you may damage your pack by over heat some day cause you forgot fully charge it or left it on the shelf after charging it for some mounths(called self discharge) while you still think its fully charged.
Dont worry about the soft cut it wont hurt your heli at all, it reduces the power VERY gently so you have enough time to land and if you feel the heli is too close to the ground simply you add some more throttle to correct it and it will ascent again.
Like I said if you have your titan with that LED warning system it lets you know about your pack weakness.

In order to program anything on the titan take look at the manual again. its very simple you turning on the tx having the throttle at highest possition then connect the battery, waiting for the modes' specific tones (described in the manual) then you just pull the throttle back to confirm that desired setting. To change another setting you should do the process again, again and again.lol. Thats why i recommend buy a titan emitter or it's pc cable. Other escs programmer cards wont do anything to your esc except burning it up.

Im running it in my hbk2 with the same belt cp 3800 motor theyre running a bit warm but not hot(motor runing a bit cooler). It has a temperature management circuit and I never had any issue with it. Naturally it should be a bit warmer in your heli cause belt cp is bigger and heavier than the king. I prefer a 35a esc on a 450 heli.

If you lost your manual here it is:
http://media.hyperion.hk/dn/titan/Titan10-30P31.pdf

Have fun

Default RE: PLEASE HELP WITH ESC!

If your running a king ll and a 3800 motor and your only hovering you shouldnt have any problem with a hot motor or esc or battery. I run my 3800 with a 10t pinion (I like lots of torque) and that allows my motor to loaf with plenty of power. I still can hover at half stick or a little less if everything is linear and nothing gets much more then warm. However I bumped those settings up so they all happen at 3/4 stick, 40% power and 75% pitch. I may be behind the pitch curve but with my low gearing it's stable and nothing overheats or even gets warm battery is warm but not hot after 10 min hover. Most of the heat generated by the esc is from dropping the 12.5+ volts down to 5 volts for the servos etc THAT generates a lot of heat. Although it will not give you a longer flight time (ok so its like 15 seconds longer ) you could add a external stepping bec and that would solve the heat problem on your ESC if you want a Hobbywing bec will put you back about 10$ or so. If your really into cooling things you can trim open the top of your ESC and mount a heat sink on it and that will NEVER even get warm!
pic below.
BTW its mounted with Artic Silver 2 part heatsink compound, its like a epoxy and is commerically used to mount heatsinks to irregular shaped components mounted on boards. It's permenent! Pricy though at about 10$ for the two small syringes.

Hi funflier - Motor gets warm about 110-130F, the esc 140 to 150F and the battery about 160(after 7-8 mins of hover). Im using the stock battery and the e-sky 1500mah 10c and the two tx knobs are at about 3 O'clock. Do you think this is just because of the battery's low discharge rate or the non-switching bec too?
And how is that stiffener? Did you make any other mods to instal that 3800 motor? Cause im running it with a 10t and it didnt mesh correctly with main gear so i filed the back of the motor about 0.5mm with a needle file. I also used a hand made spacer(2.2mm thick).

Thanks

It depends on the heli, the pack, and many other things.Take it in hover again near the ground with a training set and with a fully charged battery then wait more than 12 mins. When the soft cut goes in the heli would descend very slowly.

After this 12 minute flight, how many volts were in each cell? As long as you didn't over-discharge the battery, there should not be a problem with going that long. Also, was anything overly hot?

Hamid-So many factors that could make things over-heat like that. For a quick test, you should be able to spin the head by hand and get at least 2 revolutions before it stops. It should never come to a screeching halt either. It should slow down nice and smooth. If it isn't smooth, check belt tension and gear mesh first. If those are correct you might have something binding either in the tail or the head. (bearings, belt slipping...etc....). Thanks Z - that was a realy nice video. The main gear spins freely like that but blades are kinda sticky comparing to the video. They spin 2 and a half revoulotins but there's a feeling somting stopping them like a brake. Also the tail boom feeling just a bit warm after 7-8mins hover. I think the belt is a bit tight.

Hey Hamid,

Off subject: My friend married a woman from Iran and had a little visit to the country. I was amazed at how beautiful it is there from all their pictures. They even went snow skiing while they were there. On TV, they seem to only show the desert, fighting or nuclear enrichment stories.

Peace!!!

to answer your question yes my esc is very hot after about 8 mins of flying so is it possible that soft cut setting could be broken on my hyperion 30a esc how long does it normally cut in?

Hi Z,
Yes its a beautiful country. We have four seasons here in almost any time you can go skiing in the winter then two month later you can go to south for swiming in the sea in Kish Island. Also we have a realy nice weather in the north in almost most for a year and most of the people going there in holidays.
People here realy like the americans(girls mostly). We listen to american musics, watching your movies(boys and girls love the BrAngelina so much,(not including me though)[:@]), youngish poeple are realy fashionable. Forget about those things TVs showing you, those are the pictures that our damn government showing them and they are the minority of the truth. We are actually surrounded by them and thats a shame. I seeing people around the world buying goods from the net simply by a click but I cant. Cause we're under sanctions.

Anyway sooner or later they will go, im sure.

Sorry if I was a pain

Cheers

Is it spining to death? It should be cut off immediately after some low rpms.

Did you have the same problem with the stock e-sky esc? cause the stock has a kind of soft cut but not programable.

Hamid the pic I am showing was for the heat sink on the ESC. That is kind of a older pic as that motor was a 3900 )with a 10t pinion) which is only 26 mm in dia.
I did the same as you did on the 3800, shaved the base of the motor as it is not cut at an angle as most motor bases are and I didnt want to cut into the frame at that point. Also I run a extra motor "Pad" to raise the 3800 motor up a little higher on top of the Extreme mount. For the pinion I just position it a little further down the shaft to make full contact with the main gear.
There are a lot of variables for heat but with that 10C batter and considering the motor can pull about 20C you will find a larger C battery will run considerable cooler. I notice that my older 1500 mah 15C battery runs a little warmer then my 20C-25C 1500 mah battery but I am measuring heat with my fingers (1 is room temp 5 is warm and 8 is OUCH damnit! anything over that is a juggleing act).
I think somewhere I said that I run a ESC that has a built in UBEC and it barely gets warm to the touch as most heat is generated by the BEC side of the ESC dropping the voltage down to the 5 volts.
BTW nice job on that motor mount. Maybe you could make a full size templet of it and post it on a thread titled "Motor mount" so others could make one.

Tail boom warm? shouldnt be as the belt does not (or not supposed to touch the boom inside at any point). Does the belt look frayed or warn on the edges? Also if you have 1 complete revolution of the belt in the boom instead of half a turn on it it will still run but the belt will rub in the boom and heat it up and also wear the belt on the cogs and it will have to be pulled very tight to keep it from slipping as it has extra friction rubbing on itself also.

Yes it is spining to death until no power left in battery and still no soft cut the rpm remains the same. in my esky esc soft cut works but its a bad esc soft cut kicks in on the esky one in only 2 mins! what do i do???

funflier - On battery issue i agree with you. 10c battery is just ok with the 3100 motor i think. The titan 30a esc operates a bit warmer than the e-sky esc. I dont know why but maybe its because of the lack of enough heat sink. It has a very little heat sink on the top and a little irregular on the buttom(the last one is for its non-switching bec regarding advertising leaflets)
But its not that much hot you could touch it after couple of forward fligts.
The tail boom became just a bit warm. When i touching it after 8mins of hover it doesnt seem its more than human body temperature. I also disassembled the boom many times and carefully reassembled the belt and even lighten up the inside the boom by putting my small led tourch putting from the frame side and carefully turning it 1/4 turn ccw. But I thighten it up by a little force cause i realized when the belt is too loose it will rubbing inside the tail assy and causing chewing the outside the belt.
I seeing some people lubing their belt which i think its not a good idea. I never seen any car makers lubing their timing belts.
The boom is pretty straight also. I would loosen it up a bit again as soon as possible and will tell you the results.

On the motor mount project i should thanks to you and other guys here at RCU. Cause without your helps i even didnt know this thing should be upgraded.

Have fun

helicrazedout - Reprogram thease again carefully: Battery type:3s lithium, LVC:soft auto cut(reduce rpm). Then put a heavy (about 6-8 pounds) object like a hammer on the skids to not let the heli take off the ground(I always use this method to tracking my blades). Then open the throttle to where the heli took off without that weight(not too much throttle) and wait till the auto cut cicks in(wait for 20 mins this time).

If the problem is not solved send it back to the seller for replace.
