Default CS engines again

TALKED TO Ed Carlson again. He has a CS 061 diesel c/l version he thinks the quality may have improved and has the R/C carb version coming in about a month (this is the company that makes the Brodak 049 they machine the contra with the allen compression screw as one piece
thus the whole thing turns when adjustiing and hear it is really tight my guess no vitron O ring, he thinks metallurgy may be better and they went CNC,they have had past issues. If they can get this right it would be a much needed 1/2A engine, the one piece thing most likely is to prevent the drop of the contra.if really tight the head will strip . The good news is looks like the MP jet 061 diesel will come back a few months down the road but will be bucks. After the AP wasp 061 issues I feel very cautious on this one martin
if the same size screw in head as cox the Davis head would be a solution

Martin,
I have 2 of the CSD061 R/C motors but as yet havent run them, but the fits and finish seem to be quite good. I purchased mine from Bill Hughes and they are from the first batch.
I hope your right on the MP Jet061 being remade, I just obtained one from Jiri Kalina via the auction site, mines a plain bearing/bushed C/L version and now would like a BB R/C or 2 as there very well made units.

Stewart think the MP 061 BB diesel will be about $100 US but so is a PAW 06 (have couple of
033s PAW R/c and an 06 too) will try and get up a mount and run the Letmo 06 this weekend
I do have John deere ether, Kero, amsoil cetane boost and Castor . till I get some Davis 1/2 A
fuel. We really need a decent 1/2A RC diesel 39 degrees here in Florida this AM the wolves think its great martin

Martin,
The MP Jet Classic is A$110 approx US$100 so the BB061 R/c at US$100 will be quite reasonable, lets just hope they do make a return,

Rocket Rob, chevy43, skalliwag and myself bench ran one of the new CS .061 diesels a couple of weeks ago. We all agreed that it was a good buy for $48 US. The brass contra needs no extra seal, has a tight fit in the aluminum head. The brass ends up nice and flush with the inside surface of the head when in the running position.

What size props did you run on it ? any No's ? also looking at the RH picture the head on yours is slightly different to mine, The thicker top fin on mine is full dia of the head and has flats cut on opposing sides for a spanner.

Looks good sounds good how do I contact him (Bill) martin
sounds about right for the lightnin bug, the tt10 or OS10 might be a little overkill

I don't remember the prop and RPM, maybe one of the other guys will chime in!

Mine had flats filed on the top fin, but they were badly made, so I turned them off on the lathe, just to make it easier to look at.

I can see the flats in the 1st photo you posted ...

That is a very nice looking little diesel and at $48 would be a good buy. Any comment on throttling with the R/C carb?

IMHO, this one throttles very nicely. Does not have an air bleed, but you will not miss it. Think of this engine as "the poor man's MP Jet".

I have the MP Jet .061 (1cc) R/C diesel and consider it the best small R/C diesel I have tried! In heaven, everyone will have one.

The contra piece is very tight on my engine as well. At first I thought it was the threads, but it is the cylindrical section below the threads that fits into the head. The fit there is extremely tight, gets tighter the farther you screw the contra in. Make sure to find the very best fitting allen key when adjusting the contra. If need be, you can unscrew the thing and gently relieve the fit by various methods. Perform at your own risk, of course.

Once set in a good position, the contra should need little or no adjustment in the future.

I'd think an 8x4 for your first flip starting efforts with only a prime. Once you get it starting and running out the prime you could move down to a 7x4 and a 1/2 oz tank of fuel for short break in runs. Try wooden props for flipping and handstarting -- they don't bite as hard.

Follow the link below for some great help from the makers of P.A.W. diesels:

Good luck and have fun.

Come back and let us know how you're managing with your CS .061D.

misfitsailor's engine idled very well when he had it over here the other day. Aparently the carb is set up to leak enough air on it's own not to load up at idle. I forget the exact #'s but I think it was doing high 13's with a 7x3 which is about what a PAW does but this engine is lighter.

I have a couple on the way so I will run tests on them.

The contra piston may prove to be too much of a PIA for me and I may put it in the lathe and turn off the threaded part and use an allen bolt instead. The other possability would be to turn it for an O ring and loosen it up a bit.

Treven.

Talking to both Hughes and Carlson CS seems receptive to improvements
Chevy 43s is right during making the contra a groove in the piston for an 0 ring and knocking off a little diameter on the contra would make life easiler

Finally mine made it today looks good nice pop on flip and yes the contra is really tight will try a startup and get a running setting and then into the lightnin bug

the mini tele got some more air time today too
(OS10FP conversion) a few barrel rolls, loops, nice long dead stick glide for landing (ran tank dry after about 20 minutes)
nice low cut grass in the park martin

At least on glow, one improvement they ought to consider is an adjustable airbleed. However, I've found that this is somewhat less critical on diesel. So is a muffler, in fact. I've seen the Norvel .15 diesel to be virtually perfect without a muffler. Starts easily on two or three flips and throttles very nicely. It does have an adjustable airbleed but even with this, on glow, it's not as good.

Diesel really has some magic going for it. Kudos to CS for making a nice little diesel engine. I have one and as soon as the snow goes away, I'll be running it side by side with a brand spanking new PAW for comparison.

What material is the piston and liner in the diesel version?

I'm not impressed by the castiron stuff of the glow version. It kind of works once it is runned in properly but the initial fit of the mashined parts are all over the place...
For the glow version, adding an airbleed hole is a must.

The piston/linner are still iron/steel, but CS seems to have lifted there game as the fits in the 2 glow and 2 diesel 061 R/C engines I recently purchased are all better than the Brodak049 (CS) and CS 061 purchased previously. Maybe CS has got good feedback from there Oliver reproductions , which seem to be getting favourable reports too.
