What are good micros for speed planes?

I use JR sport servos for the most of my applications but are Hitec's 225's good for speed planes (ie. Magnum and/or predator)?

Coupled with a 6v 270 mah battery they produce 67ounces of torque. They seem pretty good on paper for a $40 servo.

Does anyone have experience with these?

Default Hitec 225s

We use 225s in Quickees and Quarter 40s all the time. They work very well for this application. I have purchased more than a 100 of them, and use them regulary on my racing planes.

$40 seems expensive though. I buy them for about $24 at the local hobby store. I only use the Nylon geared version. The metal gears get sloppy to fast, and they are quite a bit heavier.

Thanks Dave

Sorry. I forgot to convert ...that was $40CAD.

What batteries do you use with those? I was thinking a 270mah pack to save weight.

Any idea on how many flights you can get safely? Also, do you use 4.8 or 6v in your quickee's?

For batteries, I've recently switched from 270 mah Nicds to 720 mah Nimhs. The size of the pack is about the same, but quite a bit more juice. I have tried a couple 6v packs in my quickees, but didn't notice much of a difference. I've pretty much stuck with 4.8.

I get the packs at www.radicalrc.com at a very good price.

On the 270 mah packs, I felt comfortable at 8 flights of 3 minutes, or roughly 25-30 minutes.

On the 720 packs, I feel comfortable up to an hour of air time.

Depending on your plane and setup, your mileage may vary. Do some testing of your batteries early so you can feel comfortable with your flight times.

Dave,

Thanks for the replies.

I'm way off my original topic, but here's one last question. :stupid:

Do you know anyone who's placed a OS50SX in a speed plane? I'm trying to decide whether to go with 46 or 50. I'm currently leaning towards the 50, but I don't know if it can turn the props for a speed plane.

I plan on getting a hotter plane/motor combo in the future. I don't feel comfortable throwing something that's really strong in the Predator (ie. YS, Jett etc).

We run the .46fx in our club races in predators and other Q500 planes. I've seen a few OS .50s, and they appear to have a bit more power than the .46 in roughly the same size case (It might be the same size, not sure).

I wouldn't hesitate in going with the .50 if you don't mind the extra $40.
