your thrower cant
hold the plane in front of you, hands around the LE, at 30-40 degrees nose up, stand still, and throw. Be prepared for a little torque its that easy. holding a plane behind the CofG is an easy way to rekit it. DOH

ummm vid two... "im pullin back" ( thats you?) " thats a stall" nooooooo, its the thrower launching like a girl and doing a funny run in the process lol
i take it this thing isnt way underpowered.
lets hope vid 3 is better.. come on 56K

It is a funny video.... I remember when it happened, though, holding my breath, hoping it was not wrecked on the front end... the motor mount for the hacker saved it, though and protected the nose of the plane as well..

As far as launching, being a "e" version, it takes a little more than just a toss..

It weighs in at 70 oz ready to fly, so she needs a little help..

When we finally got it in the air on # 3 time, we launched down a slope, which gave enough time for it to gain speed.

Will try to bungee launch next time...

what about.....
getting those round yogurt pots with bits in a smaller part.. cutting the larger bits out, and installing them in the wing like on Rapiers. would be much easier to launch

Default Way to Go Rob

Rob Loved the Video. It can get small in a hurry,I had another flight yesterday and had to keep it at 1/2 throttle until I get use to it. I also made a launching platform kind of like what the Germans did to launch a V-1. I made an inclined ramp with PVC pipe. The Outlaw sits/rides on a carriage that falls away when it goes over the edge. The 1st attempt failed (incline too steep) The 2nd was better but the carriage didn't fall away and the whole thing went about 20ft at chest level then the carriage fell away right side then left. Well at full throttle I was puckering and was able to make a great save. After pulse and BP down we hand tossed it for a perfect flight. I will try to "perfect" the launch ramp one more time based on the results. I wish I had a video of that 2nd flight... Rob,Post more video soon I'm going for some popcorn. Pete

Default Launch Ramp

This is the ramp. Made from 1/2in PVC. The Outlaw pushes the carriage with it's leading edge. I think the padding caused the problem with the Outlaw pushing into it the thing would not fall away. Some of us with Delta's wanted a safe option for a one man launch. Pete

You could probably use one of the slingshot launchers the 1/12 scale combat guys use, but why??? Launching by hand really is not a problem ater you do it a few time. I find that if you give it a toss and have it cocked slightly right wing down, it torques back to level flight and away you go. I use the same technique on my Gremlin combat planes.

Just practice a few more times with someone launching it and you will get the hang of it.

Thanks , Pete..

Hopefullly we will get better at:
1)flying the outlaw; 2) launching the outlaw, and if we are lucky, , 3) filming the outlaw!

If I get anything recorded worth downloading, I will forward it on... its hard to get a zoom to work quick enough!

RE: launching-- the outlaw finally gained enough speed after our third launch by throwing down a slope... almost 15 or so feet decline, added to a 5 foot tall throw, means it looses 20 feet(in my electric version) before it starts cooking good....I also could go to a bigger prop to help this situation, but my overall speed would suffer and I do not have a gearbox on the current motor either..

i use my mini pipe to launch sometimes. i dont trust the fin to hole as its thin and isnt that solid being the hatch, but if im quick and dont throttle up before flying i can launch before it gets to hot to hold not recomended for first flight

I am at the point in building mine that it says to put the ply cover on the bottom between ribs 1. Does this mean you just sheet it with 1/16 ply between ribs 1?

Also, Where does the ply doubler go inbetween the ribs? just 2 of them anywhere?

and on the ply peice under the rudder, from what I read you just put it right on top of the bottom sheeting under the rudder on the bottom right ?

I did not put in the Doublers between both Rib #1, until I had the motor mount squared away... But after that, I put them right underneath the diagonal spars, glueing the spars to the doubler.

Before sheeting the leading edge, I also added another 1/16 sheeting to the doubler in front of the spars, to eliminate the 1/16 gap underneath the sheeting...

Pete and I did the rudder different.. I notched out completely the support and put the rudder straight through it.. then connected the tailskid right to it solid..I think pete actually followed the directions!

according to the directions, that is the right way, to cut completely thru it and slip the rudder down it looks like.

So did you sheet the bottom between ribs 1 with ply?

I sheeted it with ply, and also modified the bottom between the two ribs, extending back end somewhat... (to gain compartment space for the battery).. So my ply did not follow the airfoil as it goes aft.. it went straight.. Once it got to the rudder, I blended it in with the skid... (mine is the e-version= big battery)

The 1/16 ply is the sheeting for the area under the rudder. The plans called for a 1/16 ply that was in my opinion too short so I ran it the full length of the rudder. Balsa sheeting is used foward (see picture). When epoxied in place the rudder is well anchored. Pete

OK, so you cut the balsa out to replace t with 1/16 ply. According to the instructions, the whole area between ribs 1 is to be sheeted with 1/16 ply?

No, you leave the trailing edge sheeting in place and layer the 1/16 ply over it. I did remove enough of it in the center (about 1/2 inch) for the rudder to go past the balsa and be anchored on the 1/16 ply. Pete

I flew mine today, got 2 flights in on it. The thing really smokes
I had a friend trying to videotape it and he couldnt keep it in the picture LOL

The roll rate is unbelievable as its just a blur, spins were pretty good too but i need to add more rudder.

Im going to try and get some more video tomorrow.

85% expo and about 3/4 inch on the low rates, on high rates i have as much as I can get which is about 45 degrees

No visability problems there Great covering work. I'm running 80% Expo with about the same throw on high rates with less for low. Rudder as far as it will go (70deg each way).Did not get to fly due to weather. Pete
