MY Foam Cutter Power Supply Build
#51
Ralph, thanks for sharing the Build with us.
Let your Dad know we appreciate his contribution on the project as well.
Thanks for label and templates, they arrived intact.
The Label Quality is excellent.

Hey Ralph,
Do you already have your bow setup? I was also curious as to the type of hot wire youuse. Maybe you could post some pics of what you use to cut the foam with. Would be neat to see your Power supply hooked up to your cutter.

I made a bow a while back to cut the wing cores for my UFO build. The construction of the bow with more pics is shown [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=10042580]here[/link]. I ended up using .015" control line flying wire for the hot wire. It worked pretty well.

Can you provide some info on the material you used on the label and how it was made/printed?
Thanks,
Ed

The label is made from vinyl and was printed and cut on my vinyl printer/cutter. I have a part time, home based graphics [link=http://www.rggraphix.com/]business[/link]. Keeps me busy while I wait for the glue to dry on my model projects!

I tell you Ralph,
you could sell the rights of your PSU to a major hobby dealer. On the other hand, it would be really cool to have a "kit" that could be purchased including the case parts and the components. Perhaps things like the transformers could be omitted since they are a tad heavy and maybe easy to "one point source".
Anyhow, I'm sure you're probably not interested in the PSU kit business...
I was just reflecting on it since Kees has gone out of his way very kindly to put MS2K encoder kits together for the rest of us. But that's another topic.
David.

R_G, do you think you will make any of the labels to sell, if you are I want one. Please let me know.
Thanks

I wasn't really planning on going into production with the labels, but I suppose I could run off a few to have on hand if someone wants one. I would want to make a couple of changes though. First, I would probably need to remove the RCU logo if I'm going to offer the label up for sale. I would also like to add a graduated scale around the temperature control knob instead of the tapered arc. That would make it easier to find a repeat setting.
I'll go ahead and make these changes and then let you know when it's ready.

I have too many irons in the fire as it is, even if I wanted to I doubt that I'd have the time to make up kits. And then there would be the liability insurance issue! [:@] Wouldn't mind making the labels though, if someone else wanted to produce this thing.

I finally got around to revising the label and it's now ready. The size of the label is 7.25" x 11". If anyone needs one just shoot me a PM. I will also include a full size paper template for locating all the necessary holes.

I recently received an inquiry regarding the gauge of the wire that was used to wire this power supply, so I thought I'd also post that info here.
A minimum of 18 gauge wire should be used on the input side of the transformer and 14 or 16 gauge on the output side. The output side being lower voltage and higher amperage requires slightly heavier wire. It might be easiest to just use 14 or 16 gauge wire for the entire thing.
For the wire that goes to the hot wire tool I use basic 16 gauge lamp cord that I bought at Lowe's.

Can you tell me more about the Foam Cutter Power Supply? Do you make it or can you make one?

My power supply was purchased from AS&S. Cost was about 40$ for the kit plus another maybe 10$ for the box from Radio Shack. AS&S sez it is the supply recommended by Rutan's company for smaller projects. Simple analog type, but works repeatably well... I suppose I could put a volt meter in the circuit and detrmine precise power settings, but I don't bother. I have simply marked the control knob for the settings that work for my bow.
BTW- the bow is similar to RG's. I bought a glass rod intended for a reflector, from Home Depot. It's lightweight, about 6' long, and required a little cutting to get the bow down to 4'. When flexed, it produces nice tension.....
