RE: Fun with Flat Foam
I finally finished up my night flyer. Here is a video of a ground test. Visibility is very good and it didn't seem to mind the vibrations from running it up and down the gravel driveway. I am running 11 mini christmas bulbs rated at 3 volts. Just the lights pull 0.5A

Cool coolbean. I just added streamers to my Nasty I couldn't fly today so I had to do something constructive. I also built a plane hangar that holds a grand total of 4 planes, we only have 3.

Very nice Bean
Hey all, not much going on in the world of building for me lately, been doing the HDL mostly
I have managed to get some time on my waterplane and did get the formosa painted and got the first coat of poly on it. No flying though [] I hope to get to fly the formosa by the weekend and take the ES back out as well. One day soon I hope to get back to work on the T-38

Hi Ryan, I have already got a good start on the build, it has around a 33 WS but the fuse length is almost 5' So far I'm weighing in around 16 oz and thinking about a BP 12 running a 8X4 or maybe 8X6 prop, still undecided on the power. There are some pics a few pages back of my progress to date
Sputnik, what is you AUW and how do you want it to perform,, fast or good thrust

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
coolbean,
Here is my UFO. It is a blast to fly. Flys slow or fast. I have before and after several crashes pics. I have used tape to hold the motor, battery, and even a servo on. I have crashed it into a light pole ( took a a chunck of the foam) taped back in, into a brick mailbox, and even full speed into the pavement. Most down time I had was 5 min. ( had to find the chunck of foam). A little tape and I am back in the air. Great fun plane

Ya know LT... I all for "the ugly ones fly better" but after a while you just have to worry about the flight worthiness of a vehicle... If I saw a cessna with that much tape on it I sure as hell wouldn't get in.

That is what I love about the plane. It takes a beating and keeps on ticking. I never have tried to tape a plane so much. This one flys great even with all the tape. I would'nt buy it if someone was selling it. I am great at crashing my planes. This is the first plane I have had that I held the motor on with tape. I just knew it would'nt fly, been wrong before. I have replaced the tape after a crash and it is backin the air. How many planes have you crashed with the motor torn off, that you were back in the air in 2 minutes?

LT, that's pretty cool that you can just tape it together and keep it flying, I like it
Kevin, good job, looks good in the air, you look a bit proud holding that Nasty up inthe air like that

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
Yeah I maidened my first 3d plane, ever, in 10-15 MPH wind. I had an adrenaline rush out of the roof. It is so much fun and I have gotten alot better since then [8D]. Thanks for the compliments. I will hopefully be building a sport nasty for my dad as a first plane. It will be super tough with constructional braces on the inside on the fusalage. Then I will train him through a trainer cable in the transmitter. Should be good.

Good job kevin. Getting your first build and setup out of the way is important and you were smart to come here and get help. My first 3 attempts at electric flying failed miserably and I almost gave up on it. So very glad that I didn't

Kevin,
That's a change..... teaching dad something.... enjoy it, get him into the fun and you two can have a blast. Think of it, two combat planes.... Always having a buddy to fly with. I would love it if one of my kids would get into the hobby. My daughter is close but just not there yet.

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
Ha ha ha thanks I'm sure I will. I have tought him alot of things about planes and trucks, I have also learned alot through him aswell, but I have learned the most through you guys that help me out here. As for flying parterners my sister is not at all interested in this hobby and my brother is learning how to fly. He is working on it, but he still has a long way to go. My dad is just as attracted to things that fly as so I would love to teach him, but not on my 3d plane, stingy I know, but I would love to build him his own sportflyer nasty. I'm sure that my little brother's first foamy will be the UFO that Coolbean has.

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
On my Big Nasty Im not sure on the auw, since I do not have a scale to weigh it, im guessing around 22 ounces.... I want a lot of thrust, not much speed.... im still learning so I dont want it to go too fast,..... even though I am able to fly the mini slinger I got without crashing, that is only because I never fly it over half throttle.... not yet anyway...

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
Check out what I hacked out tonight for some Aero Ace guts to transplant into. It's a mini boomer version of my big "So" series dual boomer (both pictures below). Notice the original AA next to the mini boomer for scale.
Little's guys wingspan is 15". Fuse and booms are 8" long. Bare fuse weight is at .4 ounces, but that's with toothpicks stuck in it to piece it together for a picture. It was a quick hack with a dull exacto knife so everything needs sanding to improve the looks.
Not sure yet where the motors will go. Hoping at trailing edge like the original AA but may slit the wing to clear the props at mid wing or mount them on pylons. Don't want to convert them to tractor setup but that would be good looking.
Wing will get some dihedral...not sure if I should curve an airfoil into it or leave the wing flat? For trim I'll probably put false flaps on the two rudders and elevator, or at least just one on the elevator slitted down the middle for left/right/up/down trimming ability. COG might be a problem even with the RX and lipo pulled as far forward on the fuse as the stock wire lengths will allow. That's why I may have to mount the motors more forward on the wing.

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
Hi guys,
My son and I tagged teamed a new plane the last couple of days.
We are both trying to learn 3D including torque rolls and we are tearing up a bunch of stuff.
We have a couple of e-flight 370 outrunners that just dont have the guts to pull most of the planes around we have been looking at and flying. So we made this new plane , we are calling it the "Psycho" for now.
It's all interlocking CF tubes.
all flying elevator,
Hot glued together (cause the hot glue will come off the CF tubes after the plane is demolished)
No landing gear
Wingspan 28"
6 ounces so far (no RC gear yet)
The wood blocks are precision reamed in my milling machine. (Rock Maple)
We will be using a 3 cell 860 mah Li Po.
The construction sequence was so different from anything we have seen b4.
If the CF tubes survive we can cut away the crashed foam pieces and hot glue new ones in as we go.
Thats the idea anyway.
Comments and questions welcome.
Marko and Josh
