Yes. I have on many occassions.
Mine will start a 3W 55, it struggles with a BME 58 unless the prop is all the way back and can get a "run up" before the compression hits.
Those are 2 of the higher compression "50's" on the market and None of those engines actually needed it, I just tried it to see if it would do it. With the ignition off, the engines leep turning over.
Mine uses a 3Cell Rhino Lipo - (2200MaH by memory).
When guys are having problems at the field (and if they deserve my help) I use it to save hurting my arm on their engines.
A decent quality, good condition gasser that is properly tuned shouldn't need it. I bought mine way back when I was prototyping some engines and doing a lot od "dead testing" (the tests that tell you what doesn't work).
One issue with electric starters on larger gassers is that there is a tendency for it to push the plane back due to the pressure on the nose while starting. If th eplane is not restrained back properly, it can then jump forward towards your starting hand.

I'd like to know too.
I am considering an OS GT 33cc which i have been reading about how it's very difficult to hand start.
I already have an Align starter and if it can start the OS 33 i'd buy the engine. At the moment i'm holding off because i don't want to have to spend extra $$ buying a larger starter.

I was very skeptical about the Align starter when I first saw it but I have been very impressed with it.
If you send me a 33GT, I will try it for you if you like
Heck I would even break it in and tune it for you if you like - Break in done in the air of course

My Feedback: (1)
I also have the Align starter and use it in a similar way as Steve does.
Mine happily spins 40cc and even 50cc class provided I turn the prop backwards to allow some runup across the compression point.
I have used it on the MVVS50 with success
CustomPC, no need not to buy the engine out of concerns about your starter, you can always use the "built in one" (your fingers)

Generally, i would hand start a gas engine, but the OS ignition has some sort of safety measure where it won't fire below 120rpm. There is a lot of anecdotal reports from users that the engine is difficulty to hand start because of this, plus it is also higher compression than a comparitive 30cc engine.
It sounds like the Align start will do it.

Then decided to first choke it and draw fuel in it to loosen it, and that worked. The Dynatron spun the engine okay but still needed to have the prop turned back as Steve states. So if the Align is at least equal to the Dynatron, it should work okay
Don't go by my experience on the 33GT. Many guys are having good success with it. Mine, for some strange reason, broke it's backplate after the second flight and became an absolute bear to hand crank or starter crank. I think mine had a factory defect from the start.....
I love the engine's output and will be getting another one
