Has anyone been flying the Mintor .38? Nice looking engine, just wondering how it performs.

hehehe, cough cough uh huh cough cough
now maybe the DLE 35 could be closer either way...
I been curous on the mintors too. they sure look beautiful.. IMO Ithink they look better than a DA. Ilove those cooling fins on em.. just a work of art.

RE: Mintor .38
One of our club members flies a 35% SBach with a Mintor 110 and it is one powerful engine so I thought the Mintor .38 would be a good choice for my next project and therefore my question. Sounds like I will opt for the new DLE 35R.

I never owned one and when they came out i was going to buy two of them for a twin project i have. I read a lot on here how guys were disapointed in them. maybe MTK will let us know his thoughts. He tests many engines for his pattern flying. they are 3-4 threads in here on this engine.

I thought I checked the site for threads on the engine. I guess I didn't check thoroughly enough. I did more checking today on another site and found out that the Mintor 33 is the better of the two engines (33 vs 38) but not sure why the .38 turned out to be a poor performer.

RE: Mintor .38
Interesting. the only person who mentioned that MAY be the case is MTK (Matt) and he was testing engines on pipe.
The 38cc is more powerful than the 33cc. Its a pretty good engine so I'mo not sure where the "underperforming" opinions are coming from. Sure there have been a few with a problem here or there but thats true for many engines. Theres concern around the new DLE35RA ignition as well yet DLE and RCEXL can't replicate the alleged RF issues....

you have any numbers to back this up?
Also if the price is very close to other engines why isnt everyone buying the 38cc???????????? 80-90% of guys looking for more power than the 30 went to the PTE 36 now that the 35RA is out who knows but no one is talking about the Mintor 38...........

RE: Mintor .38
I think the 38 is a development of the 37 (which had a steel liner).
The 33 is a totally new engine from the ground up.
My 33 spins a XOAR 19x8 at 7450rpm after warm up. Pulls a 5Kg GW EDge 540 straight up. Hovers a heavier plane than the DLE 30 and pulls it out of the hover with better acceleration.
The 38 spins a 20X8 at 7600....
Ariraptor not sure where price came in (a curve ball perhaps) so I don't know what the 38 cost in relation to a DLE 35RA but I'm guessing its pretty similar. I can't answer the "why aren't people talking about the Mintor 38 ?" question in you neck of the woods bt maybe its got something to do with some marketing principals and the number of people using them. Mintor is not as established as DLE for instance but it ver well supported by Top Dawg Avaition

RE: Mintor .38
Just back from flying with some members of our club and I brought up the Mintor 38 question. One of our members has a friend who belongs to another club who owns a Mintor .38. He said the problem his friend encountered is poor compression and poor performance. The engine could be hand started for the first flight of the day but then required a starter get gat it to run for subsequent flights.

The M38 is not a poor performer per se. My application is different than most...mine is a competition set-up requiring a pipe, large props and soft mounting. As such, the M38 was found to have average power, similar to something like a ZDZ40 on pipe. I am looking for greater output at mid throttle positions where I fly my 11 lb pattern planes. The M38 showed average power at mid throttle settings, compared to the OS33GT for example.
The OS is a real stump puller at mid throttle, turning very large props, actually the same props as a YS175 on 30% nitro, at similar speed. If anyone has seen a YS 175 in action you would know what I mean. It is one powerful sucker!!
The M38 is a great sport engine however with easy, repeatable field manners. I always like the 2 flip hand starts of this engine. Mine may benefit some more from more break in since I only have 1 1/2 gallons through it. If I had a sport plane I wouldn't hesitate putting the M38 in it
