Is anyone going to follow Horizons long break in procedure for ABC engines?
i hope so. In my 40+ years in model airplanes it has been my experience that the effort put into the breakin process is rewarded many times over by increased usefulness and longevity from the engine.

What is the recommended break in procedure for this engine? Generally with gassers you just fly them as they tend to overheat on the ground. A smaller prop, different oil, slightly rich? Can anyone post what the manual says?

I've been following this thread and I like the looks of this little engine. Here is a link to the Horizon Hobby page where the manual can be downloaded. The break in procedure can be found on page 10.

We have tested our own Evolution 2-stroke oil, Valvoline, Shell, RedLine and Husqvarna oils. Other quality 2-stroke oils should work as well. Do not use Amsoil synthetic oil in any form.

It appears that Flatspin was following the break in procedures, which calls for (break in) in the air rather than on the bench doing Cuban Eights starting first with a 10x6 for a couple of flights and then moving in increments to more loaded props.

Yes, I did RTFM for once and started with a 10x6 prop. I did not get in the recommended two tanks of gas before switching to the 11" prop because the 10x6 was inadequate for the plane/altitude combination. I'll just do 3-4 tanks on the 11" prop before going to a 12" or 13" one. All in all, the manual's recommended two tanks for a 10" prop and two tanks for an 11" prop before switching to your final preference is not much of a break in period. That's about 32 oz of gas compared to my DLE 20's 2 gallons (plus!) for break in. I guess it will be broken in when it quits spewing out all the black goo! And there was a LOT of it, I guess due to the 20:1 oil ratio.

At 20:1 I wouldn't count on all the goo to go away. It's still much better than having a plane covered with pure oil!

AJ, why do you say not AMSOIL in any form(oil)? are you just talking about break in procedure?

kork,

AJ was actually quoting our manual for the 10GX. Here's thelinkto the manual.

Amsoil comes in many different forms and mixtures. It was just a statement covering all the varieties.

I just picked up the Evolution 10cc engine today plus a Hangar 9 Meridian plane. I am going to do a build on the Meridian and also detail the breaking in of the Evo 10cc and include as much info as I can.
I will be building the arf stock as per the recommendations and will see how the 10cc fit's , point out any weak spots, etc..etc... and then do a flight test and review.
I'll try and include as much as I can in the next few weeks and I'll probably start another thread for this too.

The first thing I noticed was the compact size of the ignition. It's measurements are approx. 2.5" long X 0.875" wide X 1.0625" high.

First thing I noticed about the ignition is that it is RCexl to wit I've always found them very reliable.

An aside from the ignition, I'm building up a Seagull Funfly3D (46-55) and was happy to discover that indeed the evolution 10cc is a drop in for a .46 engine. I had zero problems installing it in the Funfly 3D. An ordered fuel tank has not arrived yet but based on the advertised dimensions for the 8oz tank, it and the ignition will both fit fine in the fuel tank area.

Great. Please let us know how the engine behaves. I'm thing of putting one in a Bill Evans Simitar Desperado that has been hanging from my ceiling for the last twenty years.

Yeah, the smaller size allowed me to put it under the 8 oz fuel tank in my plane. It fits nicely in the small space, but I did have to move the ignition battery back to balance it out. It weighs about 3 oz or so.

I am getting ready to order me one. I like to fly .60 size planes. If this engine behaves nicely, I will get rid of almost everything else I own and have a bunch of .60 size gas planes. We shall see.

I have a question for the Horizon Hobby guys:

Why such a small diameter prop washer? Normally prop washers are the same diameter as drive washers.

It is really a style choice more than an engineering choice. The forces through the washer actually transfer usefully at 45 degrees and less so there is little engineering benefit to a larger washer. The size/ratio is the same as we have always had on all our engines of a similar crankcase size.

I was able to maiden my Meridian and Evolution 10cc combo today. The engine fired up and ran reliably right out the box with no needle changes. I was only able to get two flights but was very happy with the performance and reliability. I replaced the gaskets after the first flight as they leaked. Also, be sure to tighten down the muffler bolt as the o-ring leaks badly. I'm not sure if its because of the break in process or not but she spits out a great deal of black residue. I'm hoping it will go away after break-in. I hope to get more flights in tomorrow so that I can provide a more in depth review.

Wow, that is very interesting info. I had no clue, and it's certainly good to know. Thanks!

You got the Meridian and 10cc engine one day and maidened it the next? Looking at those pics of the engine, the smaller 1/4" spark plug looks just right.

That's great news! I had simiiliar observations about the muffler screw and bolts coming loose. It does create a lot black goo, too and I hope it decreases as it breaks in. I eneded up using red RTV to help seal the muffler chambers and loctite for the bolt. I haven't flown it again to see how well it works, but from past experience, it should do fine. How did the Meridian fly? I'm looking for a good airframe for this little beast.

I noted two muffler gaskets. Typically with a gas setup, if using a muffler gasket the mounting screws must be re-tightened after the first couple of engine runs. If using two, that requirement would be magnified.

I use mineral spirits to clean up the small amount of sticky deposits from a gas engine folding a paper towel over several times and moistening it at the can opening and then folding it to a clean side as necessary. Usually only necessary to moisten once.

The black 'goo' will be reduced as the engine breaks in. I buy the Pre-moistened wipes that Clorox sells as a disinfectant for your kitchen or bath. It works well in cleaning the grime off your airplanes either gas or glow and so far I haven't found any finish it would damage. Very convenient and no need for a spray bottle at the field anymore.

We made some notes in the engine manual regarding the muffler mounting bolts and the long bolt in the muffler tube. The muffler mounting bolts can be tightened down after the first flight and they will hold very well. The long muffler body bolt needs to be tightened after each flight for the first three times. After this it too will stay tight. Do this by loosening the lock nut, tighten the bolt from the front and then retighten the lock nut.
