Question MLD 35 Timing

I have a MLD 35 that will not run. I checked the Ign. timing and it is fireing at 45 degrees BTDC. It is not the key or the hub, I think the crank shaft has slipped in the counter weight but I need to know what to set the base timing at?

28-30 degrees before top dead center.

MLD are known to have problems with there ignitions.

Depends on which Ign you have. If you have the Melody Ign your guess is as good as mine. If it had a RCEXL or cloan there of.Timing should be 28 degrees before TDC.Don't think crank has slipped. Counter weight is one piece part of crankshaft.

I set it up with a degree wheel, I set it at absolute TDC and the timing was 50* BTDC after I longated the hall sensor mount I got in down to 45* , I removed the crankshaft and it looks like a pressed shaft in the counter weight. I ordered a new crank assy. and will post the findings.

All the MLD I have seen the only thing pressed in is the crank pin.

The timing on China made engines have a history of not being right.

I have a SPE 43. It came timed at 40*. I set it at 28*, n starts much easier. I used a lil RTV n a wire tie to hold the sensor, cause the adjustment holes wouldn't line up.

Pull the prop hub and remove the key, it is for aliment and holds nothing. The prop hub and crank are tapered and will not slip after the prop shaft bolt is tight.

Put some lock tite on the crank and Install the prop hub so you can time the engine right. Tighten the prop hub bolt and you are ready to go.

+1 on redkk58 easy method. Get one screw in, RTV, a hose clamp over the whole mess at 28* and call it a day.

My SPE 40 came set at 45*. It was easy to adjust because it(the sensor) was mounted in a split ring clamp from the factory. There were no holes in the front bearing ring.

Air, fuel, spark.
If the engine does not run, one of these is missing.

I got it running ! Even though the Ignition is new it had a problem with the plug boot. there was a resistor in the boot and the spark was not hot enough. I soldered a new boot on without a resistor and it fired rite up and sounds good. I still had t move the crank hub about 50* to get the timming rite though ! Thanks for all your support.

I have this engine and replaced the ignition before I flew it, With the Melody IG it was a bear to start the first time. Checked the timing and it was way off just like yours. I got it close as I could and it was a bit better, but I still went ahead and replaced it with a RcExcel ignition. The starting is now a lot better and I now just have to better set the carb.
This is the IG that I am now using

This was my second run with the Melody IG. You will not be able to get 28 deg with the stock hall sensor screw location. You will have to drill and tap new holes so you could move the sensor more over. If you get the RCexcel you don`t have to.
