I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can provide a comparison between the standard ("banjo-type") and pitts-type mufflers as used on a BME 50.
I would specifically like to hear about 1) comparison of which muffler is quieter and 2) comparison of performance.
I tried searching the forums but did not find the data for the BME. Apologies if this is a repeat question that has been covered elsewhere.
Thanks in advance,
tom

I can't give you substantive comparison numbers, but as a rule the higher end (JA Engineering, Bisson, Abell R/C) wrap around Pitts mufflers will offer a little quiter operation than the side down draft types, and generally have pretty good performance. They also permit a smaller cut in the cowl at the side of the engine head than the round or down draft types.

Silver,
Thank you for your reply. My desire to minimize the cowl chopping that I would need to do to my GP PW was the underlying reason, but I wanted to see if I would also get a slightly quieter engine (always concerned about busting (perceived or actual) the field noise rules) without sacrificing too much in the way of performance.
Besides, now I can say that I have "been advised" to get a pitts muffler when the wife yells about the cost!!!
I have surfed both J&A's web site and Bisson's and haven't been able to find a Pitts application for my BME. I emailed BME (no response). I'm off to my LHS tonight to see if they might have something.
Thanks again,
tom

Tom were you ever able to find a pitts style muffler for your engine? So far I have not had any luck.[&o]
Thanks Floater.

Floater,
I contacted BME - they sell theirs for $109 plus ~$8 shipping.
I decided to try buying via RC Universe. I set up my rc universe "my market" to email me whenever the key words of "BME 50" and "pitts" came up...missed the first offering but caught the second. My pitts muffler is on the way...not very shiny but should work fine...$50 including shipping.
