Default What does gasoline weigh ?

Just finished a supercraft laser 2000 with a BME 50. A guy at the field had a digital scale. I weighed in at 16.6 lbs with a full tank. (550 cc tank which is 18.5 ozs (I think). )

Anybody know what 550 cc's of gasoline weighs ?

Thanks,

DrH

Default less than 18 oz

A fluid ounce of gasoline weighs slightly less than one ounce. So your 18.5 oz tank probably had about 17 ounces of weight.

Rule of thumb an ounce to an ounce.
Gasoline weighs about 7lbs per gallon @60 deg. F

As a full scale flyer, I can tell you that the FAA instructions have you calculate weight and balance based on 6 lbs per gallon of fuel. How this converts to your question, you will have to compute w/a conversion chart

Right. The FAA uses 6 lbs/gal for 100LL. Don't know if auto gas is heavier. Mooney drivers like to use 5.8 lbs/gal for 100LL.

Default Rule of thumb ...

water: 8 pounds per gallon
Gas: 6 pounds per gallon

there are some variable factors that come into play that effect the weight:
Specific gravity (density of the fluid)
Barometric pressure
air temperture
altitude

Volume:
1 gal(US) = 128 oz = 3.875 L = 387.541cc
1 oz = 2.957 cc

weight:
water:
1 oz = 1 oz
1 cc = 0.3382 oz

gas:
1 oz = 0.75 oz
1 cc = 0.2536 oz

550 cc (gas) = 139.48 oz = 8.7175 lbs = 3.9542 kg = 395.42 grams

Yes, you guys are right 6lbs/gal, don't know where I got seven

by the way,
Water is 8.333 lbs/gal @60deg. F

You are off by a decimal place..there are 3875 cc's in a gallon (1000 cc's to a liter) and 29.57 cc's/oz

550 cc (gas) = 139.48 oz = 8.7175 lbs = 3.9542 kg = 395.42 grams

and 550cc is 18.6 fluid oz...he isn't toting 8lbs of fuel (weight). This metric stuff is sometimes mind boggling~

Default What does gasoline weigh ?

Here are some facts on water.
Weight: 62.416 pounds per cubic foot at 32°F
Weight: 61.998 pounds per cubic foot at 100°F
Weight: 8.33 pounds/gallon, 0.036 pounds/cubic inch
Density: 1 gram per cubic centimeter (cc) at 39.2°F, 0.95865 gram per cc at 212°F

Facts about gasoline.
Gasoline 87 Octane Weight 6.2000 lbs
Gasoline 89 Octane Weight 6.2100 lbs
Gasoline 92 Octane Weight 6.4130 lbs

excuse me? there is 29.57 milliliters to the ounce
2.957 centiliters to the ounce

3.875 / 100 = 387.5 in my math book ...

1000 milliliters = 100 centiliters = 10 deciliters = 1 liter

also for converting cubic inches to cubic centimeters

1 cui = 16.38 cc
1 Liter = 61.05 cui

do the math ...

and if he has a 550cc gas tank he has an 185.99 ounce tank.

check your figures again Chuck ...

but I do agree this seem like maybe someone got the size of the tank wrong ... the original question was ...
How much does 550 cc's of gas weigh?
I used the approximation method to determine an answer due to the fact to give the exact weight calculation ... more data would have to been provided.

NEVERMIND ... I was having a SENIOR MOMENT .... got my C's mixed up ...

I hate when I do that
:stupid:

1 cubic centiliter = 10x10x10 milliliters = 1000 milliliters

A FATAL ID ten T (ID10T) error on my part ...

Now, I know why I live in the USofA ...

Default OK You're right...

The guy has a 18 fluid ounce tank and it holds 8.7lbs of gas..my math is obviously off.

Default Yeah, but..

a cc (cubic centimeter) is a milliliter, not a centiliter..there are 1000 cubic centimeters in a liter, and 1000 milliliters in a liter...

A centiliter isn't the same as a cc....

There are 29.57 cc in an oz...(fluid)

550cc/29.57 = 18.6 oz (fluid)

If gas weighs ~ 6lbs/128 oz, then I say his fuel load weighs ~6(16)/128(18.6)=13.95 oz weight.

For reference, the only metric tank I own is a 220 cc..it is roughly an 8oz (fluid) capacity...

Not picking on you..I too am glad I live in the US and don't have to make these devilish conversions often..LOL

Default revision on FUZZY math 101

here is a re-calculated computation ...

1 ounce = 29.6 cc or ml

using 8 lb/gal. for water calulation and FAA 6 lb/gal. for gas:

1 (US fluid) oz = 1 oz (avoir.)
1 (avoir.) lb = 454 grams
1 oz = 28.375 grams

1 oz of water weighs 1 oz @ 8 lb/gal.
1 cc of water weighs 0.034 oz @ 8 lb/gal.

1 oz of gas weighs 0.750 oz @ 6 lb/gal.
1 cc of gas weighs 0.025 oz @ 6 lb/gal.

550cc = 18.58 fluid oz.
550cc of gas weighs 13.935 oz or 0.87 lbs ...

figures may change slightly due to rounding effect and true weigh of fluids ... but these are a close approximation ...

Now, I am going back to hide in my cave and play with my calulator ...

GEEZ ... you would think this was rocket science ...

must be so smart I am getting stupid ... I wonder if Einstien ever had a senior moment?

now lets me see ... was that C = sqrt(E/M)?
which in its own right is kind of stupid ... because the speed of light remains constant ... or I think it does ... since the is no real way to measure it that I know of?

I suppose its all relative ...

Not mind boggling to me, I think I got it right, and didn't need to use an online metric converter

Default Whatever...

I guess sarcasm is not known to Hans and Jemo..

I guess that's why jemo had the links to all those online metric converters so handy

And once again I state (now read this, this time):

Default Well, jemo.

Ah..a typo..yes jemo...I transposed 3875 for 3785..this doesn't mean I am mind boggled by the metric system, just that I can't type...

So jemo, in your expert knowledge and grasp of the subject, what would you say a 550 cc tank holds in ounces (volume) and how much would it weigh, using the rough figure of 6lbs/gallon??

And Hans..sorry, wasn't trying to offend you..I grouped your remarks in with those of jemo. My mistake and I apologize.

Number one:
No one seems offended except you. I thought we were all joking.

I only copied YOUR post.

If your own post offends you, then I don't know what to say to you.

I think everyone knew it was toungue in cheek stuff. That's what I meant by. "Very Good" to Hans. considering where He lives.

Nuff said......
