Need some help with my 3W 50. Bought it new from Aero Works several months ago and have never been able to get it to tune properly. Starts are difficult and having problems with low end tuning. I had it running fairly well initially but it would only idle with low end screw turned all the way in. Now I can't even get it started. I might get a pop here or there but no continued run. It has the new style ignition. Wondering if mabey the timing is off. I havn't changed the factory setting. I'm getting good fuel flow. Anxious to see what this engine can do on my BME Edge 540.
Thanks

If I had to guess I would check the reeds in the motor. I have fixed a few of these engines most of the time it was the reeds. The general symptom is not starting and hard to get any transition from low to high.
If you open the throttle all the way and look inside with a flashlight you will be able to see them. Make sure the tips are nice and sealed. Let us know how you make out.

Thanks for all the info... I've tried everything other than a grenade. I sent it to Bobby at CA (great guy). He's got the engine now. We'll see what's up. I'll post reply on what the problem was. I also just purchased a Composite ARF YAK-55(on it's way). DA-100 or 3W-106 ? Comments welcome...

I would consider the DA 100. The neck on the carburator is too long on the 3W engine so you would have to cut the cowling to allow the carburator to protude the cowling/fuselage, quite irretating.
If i got to choose again i would use the DA engine(i now have the 3W 106qs)
I cant think of another reason sinse the 3W 106qs is a fearly good engine. The DA is a much easier engine too install.

Torh,
I am not sure how you intalled your motor but my 3W 106 does not have the carb pertruding out of the cowl. The only way this can happen is if you are trying to use the snorkle. Mine is any animal on my CA Yak.

Thanks for all the comments. First, I got the 3W 50 back from Cactus. Bobby hammered out the problems quick. Problem #1: Air leak in carb block (hairline cracks around mounting holes). Probably my fault, possibly overtightened. New block installed and bench run. #2: During bench run found ignition to be inconsistant (under waranty). Replaced for free and sent the 50 back to me. There and back in one week. Followed Bobby's starting procedures, runs great. Now I can fly.
I also went with the 3W 106 (w/ upgraded crankshaft)from Cactus for my Composite Arf 2.6m Yak. It's on the way with the tuned canisters.
