Default Different oils. different engines?

I own a Brison 6.4,3.2, BME 102 and a D&B 5.1 With the excepton of the D&B, I've been using Amsoil 100-1 at a ratio of 64-1 I've been doing this for years with no problems at all. Ken Baker from D&B recommends against using Amsoil at any ratio, he recommends Klotz at 50-1. Brison says never use any oil at more than 80-1. NOW do I really need to use two different fuels? Brison says I can use Klotz but at a ratio of no more than 60-1, which is going against Klotz's recommendation. what are you guys doing?

You are going to get lots of answers on this but you should be able to run all your engines on Amsoil 100 to 1 mixed 80 to 1 or you could use the Amsoil that is made to be mixed 50 to 1 mixed 50 to 1 in all your engines with out any problems.

There seems to be a new wave of thinking on this, that ignores breaking in on petrolium based oil etc, etc, and using Synthetic from the start.

With some of the same concerns that you have, I have personally decided to use Amsoil 100:1 Pre Mix, at 80:1 in all of my gassers. My experience with this oil at 80:1 has been excellent.

Time will tell but I am optomistic that everything will be fine.

I guess I'm still stuck in the past.

I BELIEVE in using a non-synthetic oil for break in. I'm talking real oil made from real dead dinosaurs.

I've run just under 5 gallons through my G-62 on this combo and not a bit of carbon on the piston. It's still shiny as new. I might switch to a synthetic after 10 gallons--but thats a bit off in the future. I'll decide later. If I do switch to a synthetic--it'll be a 50:1 mix.

There's just something in my brain that says oil is good for cooling. More is better--up to a point. If your not fouling plugs and your not building up a bunch of carbon on the piston then why screw with it and try to run an engine at 100:1?

I'm not saying that anyone is wrong or stupid for running 100:1 or even 80:1. Not at all.

I just know that oil is good for cooling and it won't hurt a darn thing to run just about ANY engine at 40:1 or 50:1. As long as your not fouling plugs or building up carbon--oil is a good thing. It carries away heat and lubes the rings--bearings--reeds--seals.

But- I'm probably wrong as all get out.

Since you're already using the Amsoil, go with GeeBeeJims method with all of them at 80-1. There shouldn't be any problems at all. I already do the same, but instead of Amsoil I use Motul 800 and Redline. The biggest difference is in the brand name only. At work we use only off the shelf WalMart 2 stroke oils mixed at 50-1 for all our engines and the 50-1 mix just makes a mess with a shorter plug life. We DO run at higher engine loads and aircraft weights, tho

One other point .......

Synthetic oil has superior lubrication qualities, ( NO CONTEST ). That is why we can get away with using a smaller mix ratio, it is a better oil. It's consistancy is controlled in the labratory, and no dead dinosaurs are involved. Less oil needed in the mix results in cleaner burning, less carbon, and less fouling.

Will an engine break-in on synthetic ? Of course it will ! It may take longer, but what's the rush ? Why rush to shorten the life span of an engine ?

Gary at Brison knows what he's talking about when it comes to lubing his engines. He prefers that you use a synthetic from the beginning. As far as the break in taking longer, there's absolutely no harm in that at all. Break it in like you're going to use it, there's no benefit in running rich in the beginning with a gasser. The stuff we fly has to be absolutely dependable for many hours out of sight at a time, and we fire em up and send them out brand spanking new with the needles fully adjusted from spark one. Believe that we run them harder than you ever will[8D], and we use quite a few of the same size and types of engines.
