Default 50cc Gasser Weights

Been searching a bit, found some attempts to document the "real world" weights, decided to try my own thread to gather results. It could prove to be a VERY good resource thread, if folks will post their information. Here's mine:

BME 50cc - motor only - 48.5 oz
Plug/clamp for gnd - 1.1
Ignition - NO batt/sw - 3.7
Prop washer/nuts - 1.2
J&A Pitts Muffler/strap - 7.7

TOTAL - Actual MOTOR only - 62.2

Hangar 9 alum mount - 6.2

1650mah Nimh - 4.2
MPI H.D. Switch - .5

TOTAL INSTALLED AIRFRAME WEIGHT - 73.1 oz - NO PROPELLER, NO SPINNER

Please post your results in identical format, please, and use electronic scales, calibrated, if you have them. These weights were recorded on two different brands of electronic balances.

Thanks for helping spread information that lots of folks want to get, but never seem to!!!!

Brison 3.2

Engine with spark plug & washer & nut = 53 oz (mount built in)
C&H ign with spark plug clamp= 3.9
BCM large volume side mount muffler 6.2oz with bolts (Tips have been trimmed)

Total 63.1 oz

3 lbs 15 oz

(Dick doesn't the ZDZ require an engine mount like the BME? That will add several more oz of weight than the standoffs that the DA uses or the the built in mount like the Brison. Do you have some actual real world weights?)

Dick - your "bare weight".... does that include plug? Ignition? Six-bolt hub/bolts? If not, would you add those? I'm trying to get a thread with accurate weights; not a power debate, not interested in prop weights.

Motors/ignitions/mounts/plug/hubs/mounts/mufflers, please.

engine - equal setup with DA on same scales same day with 10 seconds of each other--- that is - engine less ignition
they were to the same ounce on 5 lb scales -postal type which calibrated with my digitals - accurate to under one ounce -once scales were set for zero.I was doing a customer's plane and had access to both engines -so I weighed em -just to see --
Don't know about any other brands weights .
Mounts?
I can do the ZDZ50 with or without standoffs depending on firewall I setup --If I use standoffs ,I use maple end grain blocks -thru drilled and secured with long 10x32 machine screws.
I like this setup as it can be done to provide a boxed mount , using two strips across standoffs.
These is not a more solid stand off but it does require a teensy bit of work.
very light setup -not as pretty as machined metal tho
I don't see weight being a real factor in any 50 gasser comparison- pick yer favorite brand 'n go ..
the prop used and spinner used can wildly affect which engine ends up heaviest .

That would be 4 lbs? (4x16)
That's 80 ounces for all up usable min weight
80/16=5 lbs

The Taurus 52 weighs 3lb 5oz including the radial mount. The radial mount makes it easy to get the perfect roll angle on the cylinder for cowl clearance and is beautiful!

MVVS 45MG (43cc) with plug, prop washers, bolts and nuts: 45.5 oz ( 2lbs 13.5 oz)
This includes a built in mount. In my application I did not need standoffs.
Ignition -- 5.6 oz

TOTAL - Motor - 50.1 oz (3lbs 2.1 oz)

Muffler - KS 60cc canister + 12" KS header = 12 oz.

Hi Bob,

I did a survey like this years ago for 40-50 engines, but I did not include the standoffs(unless engine required them), muffler, battery or switch because I figured these are installer specific and not engine specific.

Albatross,
Are you sure about the MVVS canister weight?. It sounds a little high and David Moen of MVVS Canada posted a weight of 330 grams in another thread.
Thanks
Andres

My experience (had the MVVS 45/canister/coupler/header) is that the HEADER and COUPLER are *really* REALLY heavy components in the total system. The canister may not be too bad (I personally thought it was a little beefy), but the other parts is where it really goes crazy, IMO.

However - performance sometimes costs "something"

I'll second that. I orginally had a the MVVS header for my 58 and KS can, and the header is quite heavy. I'm sorry but although I did weigh it at the time, I forget what it was. I kind of remember it was in the 6-7 ounce(or more) range with coupler...and it's only about 6" long. The KS stainless header I eventually made for the 45 is 11" long and weighs 4 oz.

This is off topic, but if you want a lighter solution than the MVVS header, KS(www.krumscheid-metallwaren.de) has several headers in different configurations that should come in at half what the MVVS one weighs.

The MVVS tuned canister for the MVVS 58 is a true anchor.

I would still take it over ANY in cowl setup -
FWIW- Mac mufflers may have a header -from aluminum -which could adapt.
The largest dia they have is -as I recall/7/8" dia OD.
If you duplicate the factory setup -stick with their length .
I build most of my headers from KS bits

I finished up my Poulan 46 conversion and weighed it ready to mount at 4lb. 3.6oz. (67.6oz). That includes muffler, prop hub bolt and washer, carb, plug, switch, magneto, flywheel and engine. Basically ready to put on the mount and run, minus prop and spinner. I then weighed it mounted on the Hangar 9 mounts and it came out to 4lb. 9.7oz. (73.7oz.) That puts the Hangar 9 mounts at 6.1oz. including the mount bolts.
