Engine for 18lb plane

Hi guys,
I'm just looking for some input. I have a WH Edge with a DA 50 that runs flawless. The plane weighs in at 16.5 lbs and has plenty of oomph. I'm now starting to build my winter project which is a 30% Yak. I expect the Yak to come in at about 18 - 19 lbs. I'm worried that a DA 50 in that airframe will be on the boarder line of pulling out of a hover with authority. I'd also like a differant brand engine. I have a FPE 3.2 that runs great but some guys think it won't have the power of the DA. I'm not sure myself. I have never tached the engine but it is very reliable. I have been considering Ralph's G 62 conversion. I sorta figured that might be a kick butt engine for an 18 lb plane. I was wondering what Ralph's engine weight is with the total of engine and ignition and side dump muffler or broken down weights. I know mufflers vary in weight but I'm looking at a ball park figure. I don't want to hang a whole lot of weight on the nose also. I'm also wondering what props they are running and what king of RPM..... I've also read a lot on the Tauras 52 on these threads as of lately. Any info would be appreciated. I just don't want to hack up a cowl and firewall and find out I'm not happy with the engine.... Here is my choices: (DA-50 would be #1, but since you don't want)
1 - ZDZ50ng, pulls out better than my DA-50 in my 30% yak.
2 - 3w 55 (6hp), 4.2lbs, $535 (I have the 3w60 and it is a stump puller in 18lb plane)
3 - BME 55...but..seems the wait list is almost a year now..extremely light 2.1lbs. (may not be available yet)
4 - G62- by Ralph. I have in my Patty wagstaff...can you spell V-E-R-T-I-C-A-L!! Ralph can save some weight
by using his ignition, starting then a breeze. I turn a 23x10 prop. New G62 available discounted in a few places.
Additional comments: DA-50 is in my book the #1 choice, not only for performance, but weight, company support, and lastly highest resell value.
The ZDZ50ng with new porting pulls harder than DA-50. There are some threads from other owners to support this. RCShowcase provided steller support, both online here as manufactur rep, and website. 3W engines are fined machined German made engines. (I'm not convinced yet about quality of ignition yet). I get good support from both Aircraft International and Cactus Aviation..althought AI is now having an huge anniversary sale..on lots of 3W engines.
There are alot of engines in this category (50-60cc) and what ever you decide, good luck. I'm sure what is to follow is another members view(s) on a whole different set of engines based on their experience/knowledge. If Dick Hanson chimes in, pay attention..he is one of the best!

Another 60cc engine I've heard good things about is the Brillelli 366gt. I don't know the weight difference between it and Ralphs G62 lite but it may be worth a look. Here is the website; http://www.scottellingson.com/brillelli_002.htm.

I have a DA50, Brison 3.2, RCIGN 62, Evolution 45, Evolution 58.. and now a Brillelli 54 (similar to the new 366GT, just smaller jug)....
If not going with a DA...
I would go with Ralph's G62... Less than $500 shipped... best bang for the buck..
or Brillelli 366GT... (going by reports on the internet)....
The 3w's at our field a running great, and seem to be stronger than most of the others in there class... (They are heavier, but are on sale at Aircraft International)....

Well I don't know which Yak you have but I watched my buddy with a 30% Yak and the Brison 3.2 and the plane weighed 18.5.
In his Edge at 18 pounds the Birson with awesome.. in the Yak it was pretty weak.. pull up was poor to be honest. Yaks have a lot more drag. I was a bit disappointed in the performance.
I can tell you that Brillelli 60 has within 100 rpm the power of the G-62 and is as light as a DA 50 RTF. That's what I would be dropping in her

I am so inpressed with my MVVS 45 mag and 58 Pro that I would not hesitate to reccomend them, my 45 mag in a 16Lb plane has unlimited vertical (I mean out of range vertical) on a 22x10 wooden prop pulling 6150rpm not run in yet, the modern technology these engines have with the electronic advance retard on the ignition and the automatic choke make them my first choise over anything else. The 58pro pulls 7000 rpm with a 22x10 three blade carbon.

yup - go with the Evo/MVVS 58 - i have a DA50 and a ZDZ50ng both great but nowhere near the 58 - i fly my AM 30% yak with the 58 - ballistic power at 17.5lbs

I have the Evolution's... and they are powerful, but I have seen two come apart in the air... Horizon fixed them... but I'm a little nervous with mine.. The pilot was running 40:1 oil mix, spinning a Menz 22x8.... The ring broke on both occasions, without any warning... The engine was actually a tad rich on both needles....
They are a little pricey IMO.... You can buy a 3W80xi for the same amount, and put that in a 18lb bird.... watch the weight of the other stuff, and that would be a ballastic machine.

I've had both the D50 and the G62, and the 62 will out pull the DA everytime.......You can hover 20 lb. with the 62 but that's it, very little left for pull out on a 95 degree day.......

I want to thank all the others that chimed in with their views of options for my 30% Yak. I haven't made up my mind for sure yet as I'm still checking things out. Stock G62 with 3 gallons of gas through it. B&B muffler, Stihl oil @50:1. Broke in with 2 gallons of 32:1. 50 Degrees. Engine not peaked for each prop, just swapped props and took rpm reading........

IMO these 30%/20 lb. planes are kind of hard to fit an engine to for 3D work. 18 lb. and under, G62 or DA50, BME, ZDZ, etc...... I've got the 3w80XI, and for $600 you can't beat it. Swings a 26x10 with authority.....It is heavier though......that means you have to step up to a 33% bird.
Where's it all end. hahaha

I really appreciate the time you've taken to send me all this info and pics. I already have the 30% plane and really don't want to go any larger to the 33% although it's tempting. I want to keep things happy around here with my wife although she does support this hobby big time. There are a lot of options and I guess I'll have to weigh everything in. If you should happen to think of something else I'd be happy to here from you... It will probably be a Christmas present to myself just like the plane was. Couldn't pass up the price on the AM 30% so I gobbled that one up immediately...... Bill
