I think you will find that DL solved that problem in their engine by not only changing the carb and reed but by modifying the porting. My friend just replaced his DA with a DL after fighting that issue for a couple of years and doing EVERY silly suggestion DA gave him. The best he could come up with was the engine speeding up when it went inverted. DA, evidently, seemed to think he should be happy with that. He wasn't.

There's a guy at our field with an older 50, and his runs like a top!
Wonder what makes some so problematic?
If it is truly a reed problem, why are some running well?
He does the type of flying I do, which is 3D and such.
Some guys probably don't ask so much from the performance of the 50, and
consequently don't experience, or care so much about the throttle response, or
inverted junk.
So many questions...

Is there an article or tutorial somehwere on the operation of reed valves?
I'm not a motor head, but would be interested in some information.
I've ordered some new reed petals for my 50, but didn't get them yet.
When I looked at the reeds, I didn't really know what I was looking at.
For instance, are the reeds supposed to fit flush and tight on the block when
viewed outside the engine?
The 50 reeds are held in place with a rubber enclosure that holds them tight at the bottom,
but not so tight at the tops.
Thanks for any info
Bob

I can't imagine anyone who invests in one of these engines, and then doesn't fly inverted. But anyway, my 3W with this symptom turned out to be a combination of a rich setting on the needles (fixed after break-in) and an under propping which allowed the read valves to 'float'. She runs well now.

The way to test for reed cage leakage is to put tape over the carb intake and turn the engine over slowly. If the tape is sucking in and out you have a leak. Usualy results in a crappy idle. If you turn the engine over slowly and the engine says thanks you are on your own.
