Default Engine temps

Alright guys..... I have a g23, and would like to know what temperature to shoot for when cowled..... last night I ran it and my thermometer read 270 F @ the spark plug..... am I too lean???around 230-240F right after turning it off and the crank was cold enough to hold my hand on it, the the heat irradiated and the crank got to 130F..... I was running a 16x6-10 and an Abell lite exh diverter....
any help will be greatly appreciated
thx

Your making it too hard.

Mix up your oil and fuel. Don't use some rediculously lean ratio like 100:1. Mix it up at 40:1 or 50:1.

Tune it and Fly it.

Checking your head temps while it's sitting on the ground running under a heavy static load is NOT going to give an accurate reading. Thats completely different than the temps when it's moving through the air.

If it ain't broke--don't fix it. Put oil in the fuel and fly it. There's been a zillion G23 engines run long before you and I were flying model airplanes. Not too many of those guys had infrared temp guns. They just went flying.

Here is an inflight plot of my BME 100 (four flights). 230 degrees is about what it shows most of the time on both cylinders. Not that whwn it was on the ground prior to the first flight was the highest recorded temp
Recorded and plotted with the Eagletree system.

Now that's the CORRECT way of measuring engine temps. In flight and logged.

triangle- Don't worry about that temp, it is not excessive. Put it in the air and fly it as Rcpilot has mentioned.

A very simple way too tell if temps are to hot is quick land and smell engine. If hot it will smell hot. If you are used to pain..touch fins quickly!!!!! Capt,n

Crude, but extremely effective. More so when you also touch with tongue and end of nose at the same time[sm=bananahead.gif]

Not too hot. Just not tuned properly.

Sizzle test:
Land after flying it hard. Run up to it and lick your thumb. If it sizzles when you touch the head--she's too hot.

I'm gonna baffle the cowling and see how it goes, first flight will be without a cowling, to tune the engine, then add the cowling and see....
