I have fitted an electronic ignition to replace the coil/flywheel on a 50cc petrol engine.
It has automatic advance built in.
As a starting point, Do I set the sensor and magnet to just before top dead center or atmaximum advance ie. 28-30 degrees BTDC?

Depends on your ignition. Falkon ignitions advance from the initial setting so set them at 3-4 degrees BTDC. C&H type ignitions retard the timing from the initial setting so set them at 28-30 BTDC. www.falkon.cz or www.ch-ignitions.com
