Default Engine Mounting

I have a 45cc gas engine to install on my Edge540. On the engine box of the plane there are vertical and horizontal lines marked, offset from centre but that's all I have to go on. There was no mounting template included in the instruction booklet or with the engine.

What's the best way to get the engine installed and in the correct position using those lines already marked on the engine box?

Also, with the lines offset from centre does that mean I still have to use washers under one side of the engine when mounting it to get correct thrust or is that why you set the engine up slightly off centre?

Thanks, FJ

Make your own template, find center, set it up on the lines that are there and drill it. Yes you use the washers, yes that is why it is off center. Good luck on your project.

It sounds like the offset is already marked on the box...assuming its correct for your motors length. When you look at the front of the box, you should see that its tilted starboard to account for the engine torque. The offset is typically measured so that the prop ends up being in the center of the planes thrust line and engine cowl.

Is the thrust line of your engine in the center of the engines mounts? If not, try and get an engine mount template from the engine manufacturer which will show the absolute center and horizontal/vertical center...then you just line everything up, mark, and drill.

If you have not already mounted the rudder, don't! Stand the plane on it's tail, secured to something that prevents it from falling over. Tape it to a table or run a line around it to sercure it to something.

This presumes that you've already determined what length of standoffs you will need to bring the face of the prop hub outside the cowl and have them made up already. Now simply set your engine on the firewall, slide the cowl over the engine, and move the engine around a little until it's where it needs to be.

There's some instructions on the Wild Hare website that will help you out. Probably some pics as well that you can download for assistance.

The horizontal & vertical lines are there to center the engine on they are ofset to compinsate for the ofset of the firewal to counter engine thrust.
Another way is to set the engine on the firewall, put the cowl on, center the thrust washer in the cowl mark around the engin standoffs for drilling the bolt holes.
hope that helps, if I can answer any more questions let me know.
