DL50 ignition pack
Hi!!!
What battery packs do you guys use fpr the ignition in DL? Manual says 5-6 V so when i give 5 cells fully charged it will be more than 6V. Should i use 4 cells or 5 will be ok?

Either works, but 4 cells is easier on the ignition. I only use 5 cells on my twins, and I'm not sure I really need to. The reason to go to 5 cells is if the ignition breaks up at high rpm, with twins I thought it was a good idea because it's firing two plugs at a time.

RE: DL50 ignition pack
Here's the email i got from Bob at DLUSA on the very same subject.
My question: Can I use a 5 cell NIMH pack unregulated for the ignition battery
without damaging the ignition?
Thanks
Paul
His response: Hi Paul,
I have been told specifically by the manufacturer not to do so. 5 cell packs
are to be regulated to 6V as the ignition is rated for up to but not beyond
6V. There are some people on the forums that are and so far, have been OK. I
have sold replacement ignitions to others who have not been so lucky. My
recommendation is to use a 4 cell (4.8V) battery.
Regards,
Bob

RE: DL50 ignition pack
I have tested the ignition down to 3.2V at 9000 - 10000 rpm with a 4-cell NiCad pack. The ignition still going strong, I ended the test to save my cells. Current consumption was about 600-700 mA. This ignition should run well on a single LiPo!

The RCEXL ignition seems to work fine on one Ly-Poly.I have been flying several engines on one Ly-Poly for several months, have never had to field charge. The engine will start cutting out at high RPM and let you no it is time to land. The ignition will not run the Li-Poly low enough to hurt your battery ,just do not forget to turn off your ignition switch I will try a single A-123 cell and see how this works. I have some RCXL circuit boards that are not potted If the A-123 does not work out I will bias the RCEXL circuit so it will be OK on the A-123 single cell. The hall sensor quits at about 3 volts.Mr.Xu says the version 2 is OK with 6 volts but someone posted they had fried two version 2 systems on 6 volts. Why run more then 4.8 volts.

Definitely get back to us on the A123 cell test...I know many of us are considering this. And if any of you are wondering who BCCHI is....look at the location, and the username real close... He knows a thing or two about ignitions
