Default Back to Amsoil?

For the past year I've been running Pennzoil air cooled at 50-1, there seems to be a lot of residue after just one flight. I've used Amsoil at 64-1 since 1985 and loved the performance and little mess it makes. I feel I'm not getting the performance from Pennz that I did with Amsoil, but I don't know if I can trust the new formula that came into play about 2 years ago. Wish they would have left well enough alone.

I've run Amsoil Sabre at 100:1 in a G-62, a G-38, and a G-23 for several years. I'm planning on running it at 100:1 in a G-26 soon. It's an excellent oil and burns very cleanly. I'm totally happy with it.

Whatever oil you run, mix it at the oil manufacturer's recommendations. Different oils are formulated to be run at different mixes.

I would pay closer attention to carbon build up inside the engine, rather than the 'spit' on the plane, with a properly tuned engine...no matter what quality oil you have chosen. Lengthy tests have been performed to warrant such behavior.

Really. I bought some about a year ago at a local bike shop.

Followup:

Three quick phone calls to local AMSOIL DEALERS confirm that Amsoil Sabre is still in production. Perhaps you're confused.

OK listen up, Saber is the new formula, formulated about 3 years ago, the original Amsoil was simply called 100-1, it was a thick black stinky oil, almost smelled like rear end oil from a car, The new formula (Saber) is a transparent blue, very similar to Lawn-boy. I've used Saber with success until I scorched a piston in my BME 102. I don't know if it was the oil's fault, I've been running Saber in it for about 2 years with no problems, but the burnout got me skeptical.

Any oil used at 50-1 will exibit more residue than one used at 64-1. Think about that. You have more oil in the gas, right? Now, what's the big deal about residue? It's presence indicates that you are using somewhee close to enough oil to lubricate the engine. It also notes that some excess heat is being carried away when the oil exits the engine, and that the contaminates that are created in an engine are being rinsed out of the engine rather than performing multiple cycles up and down the cylinder wall.

When you changed the oil ratio did you re-tune the engine? I'm guessing that you did not since you note that performance appears to be less. Had you re-tuned the engine the performance should have shown a slight increase with the addition of more oil.

edit:
PS Pat,
I quoted your PM to the Putoline tech rep. Expecting his answer and recommendation about monday or tuesday. 80 hours is a heap long methinks, but wait and see.

OK listen up

Listen up??? Humph!

I'm sitting here, looking at a new bottle of Amsoil Saber (my PROFOUND apologies for the mispelling). It says:

Amsoil Saber
Professional
New smokeless formula
100:1 pre-mix
Synthetic 2-cycle oil

Now, I don't know when it came out. YOU are the one who said Saber was discontinued, which it isn't.

I know very well what it looks like, since it's what I've been running for at least 3 years now. It works for me.

I too had trouble using PENNZOIL air cooled. Less than 5 gallons I had stuck rings on two different motors. TAURUS 52, 3W-106. So It's back to BEL-RAY MC-1 @ 50:1 for me! Been using that brand for many, many years with no problems.. I don't know why I switched in the first place. Maybe to try something new I suppose. I also noticed a power loss with PENNZOIL flying the TAURUS. Hard to tell on the 106 That motor rocks at half throttle. O well, Live and learn.

I am guessing you are running the carb settings to rich. The Pennzoil air cooled at 50-1 should not carbon up too bad. Run your engine wide open on stand or in the air ....then quick shut it off and pull spark plug. It should be a light tan color. Let us know how it comes out. Capt,n

Pat Roy, I like your way of thinking, and it sure makes sense, because my 106 does run pretty cool
Thanks

Pe,

You think 80 is bad? It was 300 [X(] then back to the shop. Not many made it..... Now you know what I'm up against. Thanks and I'm looking forward to the rep's reply.

Interesting... that is the first complaint I have ever heard about Penzoil. I have 40+ gallons using it at 50:1 on my 60 and its been torn apart 3 times now to check it out. No problems here.

Remembeer Fellas, Penzoil is a petroleum based oil and Amsoil Sabre Pro is a Very high quality synthetic Based oil which is the only reason why it can be run at 100:1.

What they are saying is....the 'scoop' is already here on RCU....actually over and over and over again. And regardless of how many times it is clearly explained, there are still those that choose to defy the results of extensive testing and experimentation, no matter how realistic and valuable the results may be. I would highly recommend searching through the amazing amount of material on this subject, already here on RCU, so you can form an opinion of your own, based on what you feel meets your beliefs.

Good job!

It's really funny because no one has yet to answer a simple Question, What is the scoop?

I have a new DL50 in my Wh Sukhoi that is just ablout finish its breakin oil. Lawnboy at 32:1. I was adviced by DLUSA to run Amsoil Sabre Pro at 100:1 like the DA guys do. I never own a DA but All my Imac buddys do and they all run Amsoil. I never ask them questions regarding oil because I assumed they ran what DA recommended, and they all had there engines running fine season after season. The engines I did own were ZDZ, Evolutions, BME and MVVS. These were all run with Penzoil for breakin and either Mobil1, Redline, or Belray mc-1. Forgive me for not being in the know with this issue. I was just hoping that if I had been misinformed about something that you guys would be a help to me as I try to be to others and now just critics.
