Today I ran the DA50 for the first time on my Midwest 300. It was absolutely awesome!!! And it is not yet broken in. I ran a Menz 22-8, and it was turning between 6600 to 7000 rpms. Everything I heard about the engine being a powerhouse was true. I can't believe my good luck!!! The plane had a Moki 2.1 which was good, but this is even better! Plus the reliability of gasoline!!!

1. I am using the Slimline Pitts style muffler purchased from Desert Aircraft. It is a little pricey, but extremely well made and has provision for smoke (which I plan to use sometime in the future).
2. I have no pictures of the engine installation. It was a real pain to install. The plane previously had a Moki 2.1, and it is always more difficult to install an engine on a plane designed for a different engine. I made my own standoffs from 5/8 aluminum rod. I drilled 1/4 hole through the rod and put some extra long 1/4 X 20 socket head bolts with blind nuts on the firewall. Installing the choke mechanism was a pain, but when all is said and done, it was well worth it. The engine is awesome!!! I am running a Menz 22-8 prop, but I can see it can handle a 22-10 or even a 22-12 after it is broken in. Carries my Midwest Extra 300S (16 pounds 6 oz) with ease.

Hey Cajun try a menz 24x8 from DA. This takes the speed out of the plane but makes the vertical unreal. The hovering is alot easier also. Slows the landing speeds down also.
Rcpilot44 send me your email adress and I will send you a large installtion pic of the DA50r.

Specific instructions from DA says to breakin the engine on a 22x10. Why use the 22x8? Also mine is turning 7100 on a Meijlik 22x10 and standard muffler.

STRANGE!!!! I guess it depends on who you talk to at DA. They told me to use the 22x10 for breakin and then go to a 24x8. I bought the props from them when I purchased the motor.

Hi people,
DA is probably suggesting which size based on what brand of prop you are going to use. The mejlik will require a 22x10, where the Menz will require a 22x8. The thing with breakin is how much load you apply to the engine. You don't want to overheat during breakin.
Cajun,
You'll find more than power in that beast. The transition, power, and smoothness the DA engines have is really nice. They start so easy too. That's a fine engine you have there...hope you enjoy it. It should last a long long time.
