Ok my question is, Are there an y GASOLINE engine tuning and trouble shooting guides?
Like what syptoms occur wuth what problems and such?
My twist 150 and 26cc spe from cremarks is great but having alil odd running problem that I am not sure of.
I m breaking in, with 3 flights/ or 1 tank of fuel(20oz) running some good conventional oil from Husquavarna XLS for the first gallon at about 25-30:1 hen plan on going to my good ole KLOTZ red synthetic afterwards at 40:1
ANYWAY, my engine seems to idle great and transition good untill i get in the air and it warms up, then it seems to not want to transition as fast, not gargly or anything, actually smooth sounding just kinda boggy, then it wont quite rev out for a little bit, but still smooth sounding, eventually it does, and every seldomly it wanted to bog out when it ran wide open for a few seconds, but only once or twice out of about 15-20 min.
I know its breaking in but I dont want to touch needles till i know which way they need to go and whichone needs it. I have a lot of tuning ability with glow but gas just acts different. I know car engines well to, just these little engines are alot more finicky it seems like, and dont tell you as much whats wrong/
I think its lean, but theres alot of nice black specs of oil coming out, and the engine was very cool after flying, although, It wa 35-40 degrees out, it was still very cool, so this to me screams rich, so hais is why i dont want to touch needles yet.
but 80% of the time it responded well and has WAY more power than the 150 twist really needs, and the thing still likes to just FLOAT in.
lol after my first flight and trimming, It harrieres well, but i landed and moved cg back, and ended up likng the hariers and it was so slow, my second landing with the plane was a tailwheel first harrier landing(5-6mph head wind but still, this planes wicked stable and fun) unlike my litle twists though, it is VERY stable, locked in into hovers. almost hands off.

Sounds lean on the low needle. If it bogs after it warms up that means it's leaning out after it heats up which is normal. Also you says it bogs after running wide open? Another indication of a lean low needle. If the low needle were rich, it would clear out after running wide open and wouldn't bog. So those two things tell me lean on the low needle. Try richening it. Also since it was so cold out you realy need to richen the needles. Trust me. I've been out flying in the same temp's. The engines run lean in the dense cold air.
PS: Pe reivers has a good web site. I'll post his mvvs link. Also I have a Walbro carb manual that has trouble shooting tips in it. Works for all carbs.

You named the answer to the problem in the first sentence of the second paragraph. You've been tuning the engine when it was cold. As soon as it reached it's normal running temperature the cold settings were useless. Wait until the engine warms up before tuning it. Makes all the difference in the world.

no, I never touched the needles, It ran good cold but bogged alil while getting to full rpm, and 2 times it just died almost after a few seconds at high rpm, but i chopped throttle and it didnt do it, but both times after a wild twist or snap. probbably that was a buble but the low is probably lean, seeing when i got it new it was summer when it was sent from ceremark so it makes sence, I will give it a lil more next time out. My maiden flights were great though, I love it already.

There is no such thing as a correct factory setting for any engine. Most times the needles come set so that the engine WILL start and run, that's all. They are put there for a reason and you are doing your engine NO favour by not adjusting them to tune your engine and to suit your patrticular flying environment.

I asked a question, researched and fixed the problem, It was rich on the low and thats why it was running like that, It suprised me that it was smooth.

Without trying to incite further arguement, your first post sort of alluded that the engine had been tuned, so I think everyone, including myself, had presumed you had worked the needles already. Had we known that they we're still in the positions they had been when the engine was shipped the first thing anyone would have told you was that you needed to tune the engine. Rather than write the same instructions 1,000 times we likely would have noted that you could do an RCU search on engine tuning. Something that supports that even more is that you have made numerous posts in the gas engine forum already that seemed to indicate you have better than average gas engine working knowledge. Presumably you have flown glow powered engines before. Gassers tune the same way but the needles are just in a different place.
Since you have indicated that you don't have that knowledge might I suggest that you take a few moments to research the hundreds of pages of gas engine tuning that has already been written on this and other rc forums. You can also visit several sites containing information specific to engine tuning such as RCS-ZDZ engines, RCGF engines, Wild Hare RC, 3w engines, and Pe Reivers' site.

Fly it like its free....yup that is just what you are doing...a new cylinder and piston will not be free! And if you crash the airplane..thats not free. If the engine started and ran ok cold on idle, it is the Hi speed needle that needs to be richened. My advice do a _ell of a lot more reading before you run a engine again. Capt,n[X(]

sry , I get irritated easily, especially after a member here on RCU has skiped payment on an engine I shipped to him on good faith, lost 200 dollars to SUMAIR, JUST A WARNING TO ALL WHO SELL!!!!!! Oh well, I ve contacted the President and board of his east bay club in CA.
I appologize captn, I reacted badly.

amd, No apology needed , you asked me a good question...I should have been much better at replying. I think a lot of us are under this financial stress with the stock market near bottom. It kinda puts a large "question" what to do, wondering whats around the bend type of thing! Hey if we all remember the good, and forget things that don,t really count...we are going to ROCK. YA! fortuntly the stock market and I havent had to meet yet. I havent really been hit but Im just a full time machining student. Not got a job, that is the worst I have had to deal with, but I get help from family so....
But I understand where ya comin from., I figure though the worst is almost over, and theres new young blood on "the best as on current" plan to repair what has been tattered by ignorance and lack of judgment.
Its amazing to me that GM cant figure out why 6MPG trucks wont sell and why banks cant figure out why they shouldnt give loans for 150000$ when the person thats borrowing cant afford but 75% of the payments, but says, we'll just save harder.
then everything else just kinda has the domino effect. Im 24 and I can see he problems that we need to deal with as a country and it just seems like noone wants to do it, just wait, and itll fix its self/ so sad
I sold my land rover and bought an economy car when polution and gas becme a big topic, I recycle and dont spen money I dont have or intend to recive, I conserve water and maksure my oil change oil is in the right containers and recycled, I lock my guns up away from kids, If all americans could just use common sence we wouldnt be in this situation. But unfortuanatly it dont just affect the idiots, they make trouble foer us all. RANT OVER!

AMD, how is the weather for flying this time of year in NC? Do you have to drive far to the your favorite flying field/club? Its kinda snowy here now. I may fly my electric airplane untill it gets super cold. Take Care Capt,n P.S. Dou you like to trouble soot engines? I Do!

Weather is cold but not very, a little breezy at times, but we fly no matter the temps, skis in snow, a fire mabey and a easyup with sides.
I drive about 15-20 minutes to my favorite place, but my friend lives on the feild and we can party at hs huse afterwards, but I have a feild I fly at, only 5 minutes.
Yes, I like to troubleshoot anything!

Try this and see if this helps you any.
http://tech.flygsw.org/walbro_tuneup.htm
DO NOT let your engine run for a full minute at wide open throttle.Thats one thing i wouldnt do.But the rest should be ok.Just blip your engine from idle to wide open and see what it does. I would just open it up for about 5 seconds then back to idle and adjust.Make sure you dont cook the engine.I put my finger on the head buy the plug and if i cant hold it there for a second or longer i let the engine cool down.
Maybe a few others will say somthing about my finger test.

well, right after my flights i can , with both hands, wrap them aroung the head ro regain the warmth and feeling after my flights, But I pretty much got this all figured out,
I found out my problem was being too rich, but Im thinking my oil mix is rich too, I just added some oil(more than enough) to some 40:1 to break in on, but the rest of my larger cache of fuel is pre mixed so I didnt want to go and fill up another jug to mix it 25:1;
Anyeay my real problem is that I was so Used to glow and those saito needles that can go 2 turn eithr direction and not sound like they run any different, this spe I found the secret tuning method and thats by the 64th of a turn,. VERY picky needle settings. but so far a twist with 2 1800lipos a reg and recier on board hovers at half or less throttle,
I cant wait to get this thing on 40:1, I assume the amount of oil added to my 40:1 to break in was making it aroun 15-20:1 then 25: 1. I get lts of blak oil spots flinging out up out of my exhaust stach and back......YES I mounted my exhaust UP like a smoke stack.....Looks cool.

Just curious, did you eventually get payment for your engine or is it still outstanding.

My name is sumair and he sold me the engine
when i received the engine it was in broken condition and there were broken parts in the shipping box , its not due to the shipping damage because i found the parts in the plastic bag while sailing he didt mention that engine was broken. i asked his to send me return lable so can return it to seller but he refused to send me the latter next story he is telling truth that he called my club president
Thanks

Same story..same guy, Sumair.
Sumair bought my Used but never flown 14mz w/o rec. or modules. Then complained that it didn't come w/ a module and that it was dusty.... The first run of 14mz had a LCD that worked best w/ the stylus than your finger, so with the fact that he couldn't use his module from his 9zap and he didn't like the older version of the LCD, he claimed it to ebay and paypal as "not as discribed and Broken". Paypal is now putting together Felony charges on him for fruadulant representation of the items to get back his $1350, which he did and never surrendered the transmitter.
I believe the guy with the engine faced a simular account, especially since the poor guy had to go so far as to contact Sumair's club presedent. Good For You, good job!
