I just got on the waiting list for the 110 xtreme. Should I order the stock mufflers or should I be ordering something else? I dont mind using some sort of high performance muffler, however I dont really want to mess around with tuning pipes. Isn there something in the middle?

Crash,
The engine performs very well on stock mufflers with more power than other 100cc engines. We knew that noise is an ever increasing problem with some fields and that canisters or tuned exhaust will become mandatory. We looked at the future and decided to make the engine work well with tuned exhaust. It has 170 degree exhaust duration which is known to be tuned exhaust type timing. All of the power figure we have quoted have been on stock type mufflers. All but one of the protoypes in the field are running stock mufflers.

Crash 90. .go on the Aircraft International website. . in the "exhaust' part of the site are pics and diagrams of "Canisters" I am in the process of making a set of headers for my "soon to arrive" BME110 Xtreme. . its not hard to do, but no "already made" headers are yet available. Bme should have them in stock shortly, though.
You don't need to REALLY tune a "canister" but getting the header length close helps. I HIGHLY recommend the "M" canister from Pefa, that AI sells, for 50cc cylinders (until BME can start stocking their own proprietary exhaust cansiter setup), and make your own header out of KS "header pieces" available from several sources. Make the header pipe about 6-7" long, then go from there. You can expect to pick up anywhere form 100-300 rpm in most cases, using a proper length "Tuned canister' setup, and the noise level will diminish drastically.

Actually, BlkBird, I DL'd the picture of the BME Xtreme off the BME site, kept resizing the file until the distance between the centers of the exhaust ports matched the center-center distance shown in the "in cowl tuned muffler" diagram in the "Gallery" section of the site, then cut out the "flanges" from the printout and made my flanges that size.
The dimensions are:
c-c of bolt holes. . .1 7/16"
Flange hole (square with radiused corners) 13/16" x 15/16".
That will be just a tad oversized on the hole, and line up the shape with the bolt holes. I use 1/8" thick washers with a 3/4" inside hole for my flanges, then remove the unnecessary material with a grinder. The headers are then brazed.
Hope this helps.

Due to higher cost for precision machined parts and the lower value of the US dollar we are going to sell the engine for 579.00. It is without a doubt the highest power to weight ratio engine in the 50cc class. Those who are on the list will receive the quoted price of 499.00.

The wait is coming to an end ! I saw on the BME website today that they have the cylinders and pistons.
I've caught the big gasser bug and am looking for a 100 ish CC motor. BME looks great but I'm also thinking DA. I'm wondering why BME is marketing three engines so close in displacement and so close in cost. I would think , sell the new 110 Extreme and keep things simple. Most power , lightest weight , same price as the 105 and only slightly more than the 95 . Can BME comment on this ?

The 105 will no longer be in production since it was an interim motor using the 102 jugs and 110 crank. Only the 95 and 110 will be available of the three "100cc" enignes listed.

I was too impatient to wait for a reply and gave BME a call. Keith was a pleasure to talk to and answered all of my questions in a most informative and frank manner. I've put myself on the waiting list but won't be able to get one for this season's flying. Oh well , too many toys already !

Guess I don't feel too bad about dragging my feet with the edge I'm building for the BME 55. Makes waiting easier. Glad our flying season is year around so I can fly it when it's done and I don't have to wait until spring if I finish it this winter.
