Default DA 50 maintenance

Hi All,
Sinc many of you just helped me determine a fuel tank size for my first gas ship, I thought i would now ask another related question

I obtained a Chip Hyde double vision with a DA 50, MTW canister and great servos. Upon examining the plane in greater detail, I found the fuel system in bad shape (hence my earler forum question of what tank to use, as I saw he had what I tohught was a large 24 Oz. tank). After shaking my head in disbeleif at how poorly maintained the ship was, I am now of the thought that I should probably ask the crowd here what maintenance I should be thinking about on the DA-50, which I am sure the previous owner's idea of maintnance was to put gas in the tank. This is my first gasser, and I have so far taken a guess that I have some maintenance due on the Walbro carb. So, what should I be looking for on the engine, before I fire it up in a few months (once the Michigan winter recedes). Also, pointers to other threads would be helpful. I have searched a bit here so far and found one good one on cleaning the walbro card screen, but nothing else so far

THanks to all who reply!

Joe

Hey, slipkid
There shouldn't any real "maintenace" be necessary, unless you feel bored and want to kill time, till you can fly, finally. Check the spark plug for the proper appearance. Should be light brown in color. Take the muffler off and peek into the exhaust port. Hopefully you'll see a clean cylinder wall with no scratch marks. If you can fire up the engine once and check how it runs. Needless to say, you want to do this outside and not in your garage. After that you should empty the carb from any fuel residue. Don't leave any gas containing alcohol inside the carb for too long. Other than that there is really nothing you need to do. Good luck!

Pick up a rebuild kit for a Walbro wt 201 and replace the diaphragms and gaskets. Clean out the crud that's bound to be in the carb screen. Replace the fuel lines and gas filter. Use a filtered clunk in the tank. Zip tie all the line connections, inside the tank and out, all the way to the carb. There's nothing wrong with using a 24 ounce tank with a 50cc engine. Some people prefer to go over the top with weight reductions. You don't have to fill a larger tank all the way. I prefer to have a little flexibility in my flight times.

When it's time to run, mix up some gas with 32 to 50-1 mix of a good oil. I prefer Redline, Motul 800, Stihl Ultra. Others prefer Pennzoil air cooled at 32 or 40-1. Some like Bel Ray products. A few go with Amsoil at ratios where the oil can is just waved around over the gas for a moment. Most, not all, of the oils noted keep an engine clean, well lubricated, and cool with good needle settings.
