RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Mine was 16.25 with no mods(DA50,2700mah nimh batts) This plane was the best build, fit and finish, least fussing out of the box to get into serious 3-D flying. If you can get one from TBM (30 %), get it, you wont regret it. At 16.25 lbs, theres no need to lighten with DA50 power, this is with aluminum tubes & gear too. I have to repair the engine box & fire-wall, having soo much fun I forgot to fill it updoh!!!! It went straight in dead stick from about 15 ', only damage was the engine box & firewall & a little cowl damage, even the wing tube is fine! The DA50 did need a new crank shaft extension, $60 for that & new timing hub. Cheaper than a glow 4-stroke repair!!

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
This link is to pg 146 of this thread and it shows where I removed all the excess wood. Mine is a 2nd generation TOC 1 YAK (before Aviation Models) so your plane might be built a little different. I have carbon everywhere, DA 50 w/stock muffler, everything mounted as far forward as possible, TT spinner, and 1" of clearance between the cowl and spinner. My plane is neutral balance on a 45 degree upline. Do not know what it weighs but it has extreme pullout here at sea level.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
My other DA50 will pull a 18.5lb(dry) Double Vision out of a hover with authority, I think they have close to 30lbs thrust. So if any of my planes are under 19 lbs., I dont do anything for weight loss. I'm not completely sure, but I think my oldest DA50 in the DV is just breaking in now, it seems stronger and gets more R's after 9 months of flying. Wonderful engines & service too. Its 50cc/30% for me , no more glow!!!!

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Well I guess it will be a while till I get to fly the yak again if at all. I magaged on the 5th flight to put it in the trees. I had already made one landing attempt but it just kept floating by so I went around for another attempt and there is a patch of trees out on the far right corner of the field. I guess the size of the plane is what threw me off because I could have sworn I was far enough away from the trees but obviously not. But i was coming back around and just started to bank it to the right and started on the elevator and next thing I new it disappeared. This happened on Monday and I finally got it down today after three days of trying. It was probably close to 60' in the air and the only damage to the plane while it was in the tree was the right wingtip was broken off and there was another branch stuck in the same wing.
I finally resorted to my bow and arrow and rocks taped to the end with 50lb fishing line and tried all day getting different branches broken off then finally looped the branch that was under the plane. I originally thought well I'll try to catch it when it comes down but then I thought it will probably be coming down like a brick so I decided to let it decide it's fate. It ended up coming down slow and I could kick myself in the arse for not catching it now. Anyway it has some pretty good damage and I will let the picks show whats wrong. Let me know if you think it would be worth trying to fix. Everything else inclucing the motor is in good shape and the firewall isn't damaged, main damage is the right wing, fuse at the wing mounts is busted up pretty good, the cowling and the prop.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Yes it is fixable. Strip the covering off the wing make what parts you need. I dead sticked my 33% yak and messed up the right wing as well as breaking the fuse in half behind the wing at the beginning of summer, fixed it and have put 27 flights on it since. Work has me on the road at the moment but when I get home I will post some pics of the airplane taken after the crash. The damage it had was much worse than what I see in your pics. Once you start on the repair the damage will probably not seem so bad.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I think you are right whitedog,
I think alot of it is just frustration. It was only the fifth flight when I hit the trees. I was having problems with the motor burbling and couldn't get it tuned out and I had a deadstick on the 2nd flight and I landed it like a feather. It is the stupidity of getting that close to the trees that is eating at me. I would have been happier if I had just buried it into the ground LOL. I started stripping the covering on the wing and will hopefully finish stripping it today. I will have to make a trip to the hobby shop and get some balsa. I think the hardest part to fix is going to be the wingtip itself but I managed to get the piece that broke off so maybe I can incorporate it into the repair. I will need to strip the covering off of the fuse in the wing area. The hardest part with that is going to be the deck and the fiberglass tube came loose.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I thought I might post my progress which will come to a stop until I make it to the LHS to get some wood. Some of the pics are what I started with after removing the covering and the last couple are of the wing ready for the new wood. I need to do some reading on how to do sheeting.

NUTNDUN..... Been there to many times... And no matter how many times it happens it some how feels worse and worse, that might be cause the planes are growing in size and $$.. I have the same color schem, I think you can fix it but im thinking about you adding weight with the extra wood and epoxy. How much did she weigh before the tree top landing?

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
She came out light, was around 16 lbs 6oz with a 1/4 tank of fuel. I think I can fix the wing with barely adding any weight by just using ca and sumo glue instead of epoxy. The part I am dreading is the covering LOL. Speaking of which anyone know what the color numbers are for the ultracote?

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I have gotten a pretty good start on the repair on the fuse. I got the covering pulled off and got alot of pieces glued back where they belong. I am going to add thin ply where I can to reinforce and add fiberglass tape any where else it may need. Hopefully I won't add too much weight to it.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I got a good bit done between last night and today on the right wing which had all the damage. I made new ribs and cut the lightening holes. Made a new leading edge and got the sheeting glued in place. I have the two smaller areas to fix yet but they won't take long at all. Here are a few pics of the progress.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Its a DA 50 with the standard muffler and a Troy Built models 23X8 prop that ran me about $24 bucks. Its broken in all the way and runs on Amsoil synthetic at around 80:1 or 100:1. The airplane weighs about 17 pounds.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Yes it will, but a slimline pitts on a DA 50 is usually, power robbing and can make the mid-range burble never go away. At least that was my experience with them on a couple of different planes (TOC 30% YAK, TOC 30% 260, QQ YAK) I use nothing but the stock muffler on my DA 50s and it runs way better and the power is better.
Just my 2 cnts.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I have my yak with a ks1090 tuned pipe. The header has 0 drop. I made a balsa tunnel, and some holes in the belly. I changed the elevator servos to only one in a pull pull configuration, for better balance, but I don´t think is really necesary.
If you want, I can send you some pics. I think I post them here anyway.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
When you say crab foot, you mean flying in a slip or that you need lots of right rudder trim? I got 2.5 degrees of right thrust and 2 degrees of down thrust and it tracks nice on up lines and trims nice for level flight.
Best,
Dave
