okay, that thread has some valuable information, thanks, so you ended up using just one support in the center of the cannister and cutting of 1 1/4 in off the header. It's good to know that you don't want it too tight in there, cause that's what I would have done; used two mounts and got it real tight. my plane should be in some time this week. so I'll probobly have some more questions when I get started, thanks, Phil

well, I got mine in the air. I really love the way this one flies. first of all, there was NO trim needed. and the DA 50 ran perfectly and nice and quiet on the cannister. everyone at the field loved the looks of it, and I only had one of em say they loved the hot pink color. I told him it was metallic red. ( maybe he's color blind?)[8D].I took it up kind of high to get the feel for it, but it wasn't neccessary. it was very comfortable to fly down low, no surprises. I followed the manual for throws and it seemed pretty close, maybe a little too responsive on low rates. My cg is about 6 1/4.

It holds a pretty line, and snaps are very nice. there is plenty of power for vertical uplines. and KE is going to need a slight amount of up elevator with rudder, but that's probobly cause of my aft cg.

The high alpha stuff is where this one is going to shine, even with my meager experience I was able to hold a decent looking harrier right above the runway. I haven't tried inverted yet. waterfalls are so tight around the wingtube. it flies so light, This is gonna be one awesome plane. I hope I can keep it in perfect condition for 10 years! I love the wing & fuse bags, I get more damage to my planes from riding in the truck than anything. by next weekend I should be able to wring it out completely.

Thanks for all you guys' help with this project, I have one more question,, How do you keep the cannister from sliding back off the header, I put a little grey rtv on the pipe before putting on the coupler, maybe that made it slippery? happy flying to ya, Phil

I didn't put anything on the joint. Just the clamps and it holds fine, though my can outlet is up against F1 so I don't think it will move anyway. I cut my header so the can was as far back as it could be while exiting the cowl.

Anyway, congrats on the maiden!!! This is going to be your new favorite plane. Your CG is right were I fly mine and I like it. Make sure you use your expo's on high rate. My ailerons are way too sensitive on high rate at 40* throw. I think I'll have to use 75% expo on them, or drop my EPA down a bit. Happy flying!

I just ordered a Smart Fly cutoff and as soon as it gets here, I'll let you know how I like it.

I have it installed in mine. Very easy to set up and works great, you going to like it. Add a little more confidence if something goes wrong. But I hope none of us will ever get in the situation when it need to be used.

cool. I would like to get one too but had to order some parts for the QQ yak this week. ( I try to keep my hobby budget down to $ 500 a week) I haven't got to fly the extra any more this week but man, I still have the lingering excitement from the weekend's flight. this plane is a jewel!

about the cannister: my outlet is up against 51 too, but for some reason , it slipped off during the second flight. ( it slipped off sideways) very odd as that can was secured pretty tight in the homemade support bracket. I guess I'll try a couple beads of silicone here and there to keep it secure. Is it possible that I have it too tight ?

it was 2 inch, but part of it got burned when it slid sideways, so I cut that part off and now it's about 1 1/4 in. I added a 2nd support in the back cause it was so loose. I'll try it this weekend and see what happens.

Wow,
I put 4 flights on yesterday using the SmartFly kill switch and it worked perfectly. Its a very nice addition to the plane. I now use an idle down switch for landing and the kill switch to shut the motor down. Now I need to buy two more for my other planes!! Highly recommended!!!

I also changed my throtle EPA's to 110 each. I was having trouble getting the DA 50 to do high alfa stuf because the motor ran too slow, or too fast. My high EPA was 139 and my low was 30. I think this is going to make a big differance with the throtle.

Hmm this tread was dead for a while. What happened???-no one fly/buy PAU Extras any more? No more fly reports, mods, etc? Some in flight videos would be nice also. I tried to shoot video last weekend but it is far away from perfect, so I am not going to post it. I have to wait for better weather.

Weather has been keeping me down for almost a month now. Just way too windy in the afternoons.[:'(] Hope to get a break soon. I need to see how my throtle is going to work.

Hey born, got my extra done last week and am impressed. I went with the Brillelli 60 and the performance is great. The plane took a little more mixing than I expected but I am a old pattern guy so it is hard to please me 100%. I don't know what the final weight is but I'm figuring around 17 pounds. I used hitec 5955tg all around and a JR 8611a on rudder, so there is plenty of authority on everything. One nice thing with the Brillelli is I am able to run a single cell Lithuim Ion (3.6v 2000mah) and get five hours of flight time out of it and only weighs 1.5 oz which is the lightest ignition pack I know of. I am running a single pack (5600mah Lithuim Ion) on a miracle switch and can fly all month without charging. Could not be happier with the plane just some minor flaws in airframe, I had to strip the covering and finish out the front hatch area to get rid of the seems in the wood, not bad just a eye sore for me, a crazed canopy from the factory, and my cowl is cracking on the side in only two flights. I will order a new cowl when I have to but no other problems to report. I did pin the firewall in with 2-56 rod just for good measure four little pins to save a motor from coming out, well worth a gram of weight. I am getting alot of attention with this plane and people want to see it fly. A very good investment in my book.

If you can't see it, don't hand me the controls!!

Has anyone compared the BME Extra with the SD/TOC1 Models Extra? I like the colour schemes offered with the SD ones but I think that the hardware is not as good as the BME, not sure if there is any difference in flying charateristics?

Any info appreciated.

Form most points of view, the BME is superior, especially in the quality of the hardware provided and it's flight abilities and envelope. I do agree that the single covering scheme is less than that attractive. But it's really a well built kit, if somewhat less well covered...

It has no real 50cc, 85"+ span, Extra competitors at this point, at least until the EF 88" comes out shortly. It can also be completed at 16lbs. or less, which is a great weight for the size...

I can say that waydown2low' s flight skills made this plane look good. Seen him fly it at Elkhart Ks fun fly. Gave me the motivation to finish my extra. Brillelli 60 on it pulled it around awsome. Now I can't wait to get mine in the air.

Many thanks for the info, basically what I thought, very tempted by this Extra it looks great. I am sure the EF Extra will be a hit, but is quite a lot more money, especially over here in Blighty!

Has any one put a smoke system on this plane? I know it will add some to the weight. I was just thinking of putting it on since I had the pump.

I think here it's $619 vs. $649. Translate that to pounds and start weeping....

If you fly over to Atlanta and buy the entire setup, including engine and radio, the difference in price is likely to cover your ticket... Buy a couple more radios and engines and you end up ahead once you sell them in the UK...

How do you know the price of EF Extra? It is not on their web site yet. Anyway, I change prop on DA to 23x8 Xoar and remove an extra 1 oz leading weight. My CG was set to 6” at first. It made a great difference. I feel like I am flying the different plane right now. Its definitely makes me a better pilot that I am. I was doing a lot of different things but knife edge amazed me. It is sooooo slooow, stable and at the very high angle. My next step would be to make this plane flight neutral; I think at that point it will be extreme 3D machine. I will try to get some video.
