That's what I do, when I have balsa clad aluminum landing gear.

I have been working on filling the center section and fitting the main wings. I was able to complete the tail section and start sheeting the fuselage. I received my canopy and wheel pants this week and plan on building the canopy area in the next little while.

Has anyone checked the cg with using a DLE 60 twin? If so did you need to add weight ?

Steve, Email Wendell on his web site and I'm sure he would answer your question. I haven't fully assembled mine yet as I'm waiting for spring and 65-70 degree weather so I can spray paint outdoors. May be summer before we get to that temp though.

I did that and he said he did not need to add any weight just moved the gear around to get it to balance. I got a 3W 80 twin for mine should be able to get to fit.

Steve have you be able to make the 3w 80 fit without cutting the sides of the cowl for spark plugs or cylinder clearance ? I would love to put a 80 on mine.

I do not have the cowl yet and have not started the build. When I checked it against the plans it is very close. I do not have the length between the caps with me I will check and post the dimensions.

I was finally able to get the measurements of the 3W 80cc twin it is 11.250" across the spark plug caps and just under 7.500" from the back to the spinner back plate.
It weighs 7 lbs with both mufflers.

Where in Heber City do you live. I am in town visiting my kids and brother in law. We are in the alpine meadows subdivision.

Hi All,
Well I have got to this point and I really need to get outside to paint all the parts needed for final assembly. Of course this Northern Maine weather is not cooperating as it's 7 degrees right now. Believe it or not but it may hit close to 50 tomorrow and then turn cold again. Oh well, time to start figuring on my next bird. Here's a couple, three pictures.

All:
Ok I have to admit it. I have the hot's for this bird. I built it's full scale brother a few years ago the RV-8A and it took me 7 years to build from the ground up. (Picture enclosed). I wish Wendel would design the RV-8 both in tail wheel and nose gear models. Couple of questions for you that have or are building this bird.

1. Are the Leading edges formed (rounded) or do they have to be shaped? If so what is your method for shaping the leading edges on the wings?
2. I see the DLE-60 was used by Wendell. Has anyone flown it with this engine yet? Are there any videos of it flying with the DLE-60
3. Is there a step by step guide?
4. What is the inside cowl measurements? I have seen 2 different answers to this question.

Thanks guys in advance.

Glenn, Wendells plans show most of the detail you need to build his RV-4 but as far as a guide you are out of luck. I don't know what a cut kit looks like as I hand cut all my own wood which undoubtedly is probably heavier than a cut kit. I shaped my on leading edges and they are not as round or shaped quite like the plans. For some reason, my preference on L/edges is to keep them as round as possible. If you want the cowl measurement between cylinders I can get that for you. Just let me know what you want for a measurement. Your RV-8 looks awesome. Wish my RV-4 looked that good.

Frank:
Thanks. I am wanting to know what the measurement is inside the cowl in inches where the spark plugs would go. Also if you happen to have the DLE-60 what is the measurement from spark plug boot to spark plug boot. Anyone using a bigger engine? If so which one and what mods if any did you have to do?

Thanks
Glenn
