Hangar 9 AT-6 Texan
I still need to measure the current and RPMs on my 26-cell setup. I expect around 100 watts per pound.
On 20-cells, it draws about 40amps for 86w/lb.
I'll measure it this weekend.

The dummy air scoop was converted into an active air scoop that would draw air into the fuselage to cool the battery packs. The MaxCim Charging jack provides for re-charging my flight packs right in the plane. The Remote LED diagnostic indicator allows me to test for proper controller operation at a glance...a true convenience!

RE: Hangar 9 AT-6 Texan
Wow! What a nice conversion! I fly a slimer TF AT-6 and love it, but it is my last IC airplance and will sell it this winter, going all electric! The H9 AT-6 looks like a nice replacement.
I have a question on using dual LiPoly packs. How do you charge them? If I used two TP 4s4p packs in series for power, do I just charge them one at a time?
Thanks

RE: Hangar 9 AT-6 Texan
I have a Great Planes Triton, good for 4 cells of LiPoly. I would be worried about balancing the charge in the packs if I charge the two 4s4p packs by themselves and then connected them in series. I know of know charge that will do 8 cells of LiPoly.
Thanks for reply

RE: Hangar 9 AT-6 Texan
At one time, one of the expensive German chargers claimed to be able to charge up to 9S.
Now, don't take my word here as law, but I think it's actually safer from a cell balancing standpoint to charge LiPolys in parallel than it is to charge them in series. As long as the two packs start out in fairly similar states of charge, they will automatically balance as they charge in parallel.

I have used german Spectra II charger for lipos for around 1,5 years,
it works fine, and it is capable of 12 pces in series charge.

Hi Greg,
What did it cost you to build the entire thing (from start to finish)? Just curious as I am planning to get the same AT-6 from Hangar 9 but Glow powered.
Thank you
Kris

Hi Kris,
Here is a breakdown of the costs. The e-powered version is definitely more expensive but has an advantage of keeping it look new longer and produces much less vibration. Either way, this model is a beauty and fun to fly! Good luck!
[ul][*] AT-6 Texan $250[*] MaxCim Motor/ESC/Gearbox $500[*] 4 servos $60-$120[*] Retract servo $30-$60[*] Batteries $120

RE: Hangar 9 AT-6 Texan
Hi Richard,
Thanks for the report! I agree that the AT-6 is a great plane. Here in Upstate NY, we have snow so I've been flying mine on a simulator so I can practice holding in some right rudder on takeoffs.
I liked the Hangar 9 design so much that I decided to review the new F4U Corsair as well. The Corsair is the third and final stage of fighter pilot training. I'll start a new thread on it soon.
Regards.

RE: Hangar 9 AT-6 Texan
The flight times are listed in the "Specifications" section of my review but i'll repeat them again here.
On 26-cells of CP1700SCR NiCd
- 47amps @ 24.5v
- 7840 RPMs at prop
- 77mph
- 6-7 minutes of scale aerobatics/cruise
- 129 watts/lb.
On 20-cells of CP2400SCR NiCd
- 34amps at 20.2v
- 6580 RPMs at prop
- 64mph
- 9-10 minutes of scale aerobatics/cruise
- 76 watts/lb.
Someday i'll get some Lipos for it. I use a similar power system in my Graupner ShowFlyer on an 8s5p pack of Kokam 1500HC cells. Although expensive, it provides for great flight duration at 7500mAh.

Check out the picture(s) of Greg and his AT-6 Texan in the latest (March 2004) edition of Model Aviation Magazine, the official publication of the AMA. The 2003 NEAT Fair is a featured article this month.

RE: Hangar 9 AT-6 Texan
Luc,
I think the confusion about the CG came from the placement of the 4-3/4" value. Some folks measured from the wing leading edge instead of the saddle area. I used the wing chord (center) for my measurement, which included the wing saddle, and it flew fine.
Good luck!
