Asmund the plugs I bought cost $6 for the #6, $5 for the tower plugs and $4 for the os # 7. Not too bad. The ASP plugs in your link were a give away cheap price. I just wonder if the shipping would kill the advantage in savings?
Darzee no offense was taken. I sorta figured you were mixing me up with someone else. Trust me, you would have to work long and hard to get under my skin. I ask for suggestions and you guys gave me a few and its appreciated. I just for the life of me could not remember how plugs were rated and what I should try. That chart was great.
You do keep saying that the plugs I bought are too short but they are supposed to be okay for my engines per Tower Hobbies. I will give them a try and if they don't work then its back to the drawing board (or here). What really gets me is that I had a drawer full of GPs at one time but gave them away to the neighbors sons for their gas cars. I bet I gave away 50 bucks worth of plugs(old prices)because I didn't think I would ever do RC again. Just goes to show you never can tell (thanks Chuck Berry).

The OSand Tower plugs are just a wierd length. They work OK in most engines its just that they are not the most "optimum" length. Iuse them often for just a beater plug since Idiscovered Merlins.
If you get good performance with them its no big deal, you certainly are not going to hurt anything.

The OSF plug is a very hot Four stroke plug and could lead to problems if you have detonation. It may work in some two strokes but you may end up running a much richer fuel mix to compensate and the idle quality may suffer. It all depends on the engine. Matching the right plug to an engine is kind of an art, some engines are easier than others, but when you get it right the guys at the club will all say "I didnt know a little glow engine could run like that" .

Hi guys,
I have a Magnum .52 two stroke currently running an OS #8 plug. This works well but I hate paying 8 bucks for one. I was considering getting the A3 or #6 plug (hot) or the #7 (medium-hot) plug which is considerably cheaper than the 8. Has anybody had success using these types of plugs in the Magnum two-stroke line engines?

I guess you already know and understand; from using the OS #8, that a medium heat glow-plug is best for your engine.
Using any hotter glow-plug would make it necessary that you open the needles further, to richen the mixture.
This will be necessary to retard the ignition, to avert detonation.
...And you will just be wasting fuel, with no gain. It is not a 'trade-off'!
The plug that your engine needs will also have to be long-reach; longer than the OS' medium-length, to fit perfectly.
The OS #6/7/8 remain 'sunk' in the combustion chamber of your engine; and even in .32 and larger OS engines...
Some glow-plugs that are medium-heat and long-reach, are [link=http://mecoa.com/acc/glowplug/glowplug.htm]the K&B-1L[/link], [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFTW8&P=7]the Fox Blaster[/link], [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEMZ0&P=ML]Traxxas 1[/link], [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXPYB4&P=ML]Traxxas 2[/link] and OS' own [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXSBW9&P=7]LC4[/link].
Most of these plugs are labeled 'for cars', but will work just as perfectly in plane engines; so just ignore this.
They all cost much less than the OS #8 and will work better.

Great for 5% nitro and small props. IMO way too hot for anything more. If you use 0% nitro consider the Thunderbolt 4 stroke plug. Hotter than the OS F. If you think the hot plugs are better because it idles better, then you are setting your idle too rich. I am somtimes suprised at how little idle mixture setting I have on some engines. When the carb on my Magnum .30 broke I notice the idle mixture was just barely cracked open. It ran very well like that.

Thanks Dar,
You are correct that I'm a bit apprehensive to try the more hotter type plugs like the A3 or 7. These plugs are cheaper but if I have to run the engine more rich to compensate than I'm just wasting fuel and at 20 bucks a gallon I'm not really saving anything.
thanks for the heads up. I'll try the LC4 plug. How come it is only marketed as an RC car engine plug and not for planes??

OS have a policy that may sometimes be difficult to explain, or to comprehend...
One one hand; with plugs intended for plane engines, they have given up on offering long-reach (for larger engines) and short-reach (for smaller engines) glow-plugs; and instead offer only medium-reach plugs.
...A 'one size fits all' policy... Probably to cut production costs for two lengths...
On the other hand, they offer long-reach plugs for cars, which work perfectly in plane engines also...
I tried the LC4 and also recommended it to others in a local Israeli forum; and after trying it, they can't thank me enough!
Ignition simply is just that, whether the engine is installed in a car, or in a plane.
A glow-plug that works in a car engine, will ignite the mixture just as well in a plane, or in a boat... Providing it is of the correct heat range and reach for the engine.
Maybe Bill Baxter (Bax) will care to comment on this.
